This work was performed with the intention of giving some information of the solubility of the more common waxes, by means of extraction with several commercial solvents. Besides the individual waxes, various mixtures of waxes were also used to determine the effect of the mixtures on the extractability.

Determinations are also made to find the extractable matter in a commercial furniture polish and shellac. The acid, saponification and iodine values of the polish and shellac are also found.

Very little work seems to have been done on the accurate determination of percentage of extractable matter in waxes and mixtures of …

A Study Of The Colloid Obtained From Weathered Lignite, Cecil O. Lohn

When Lignite is exposed to the action of weather it undergoes various changes, probably due to oxidation. Surface beds of lignite are often rejected by the miners as inferior coal, due to the weathered condition. But when this weathered lignite is treated with sodium hydroxide, and the resulting solution allowed to evaporate to dryness, there is left a hard, shiny substance very similar in appearance to hard coal. This dried product has been exploited under the name of Dakolite. When dispersed in water this product makes a very good wood stain.

Certain waxes when solidified in a strong electric field exhibit unusual electrical properties. Several days after formation there is a polarization in the direction of the field which seems to persist for an indefinite length of time. The surface that was in contact with the anode during formation first ass a negative charge and then obtains a positive charge, which under proper conditions is practically permanent. The surface that was in contact with the cathode first has a positive charge and then obtains a negative charge which is the permanent charge.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine to what extent the reaction between stannous and arsenate ions in silicic acid gels is influenced by temperature.

This was to be done by observing (1) the rate of crystal growth; and (2) the appearance of the crystal growth in sets of gels identical in composition but kept at different temperatures throughout the process of crystal growth.

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree in 1931, traces the historical development of the calculus from ancient Greek mathematics through the early twentieth century. The study is organized chronologically across eight sections. The introduction defines key mathematical terms including calculus, variable, and limit, and situates the calculus as the most powerful instrument of mathematical investigation. Boncyk in his research on potentiometric titrations, made the observation that apparently mercurous nitrate could be used to titrate chromic acid solution. He used potassium iodide as an outside indicator and found that a slight excess of mercurous nitrate gave a gray precipitate with potassium iodide solution. The precipitate seemed to indicate the end point, or the neutralization of the chromic acid; a slight excess of the mercurous nitrate causing the immediate formation of a gray precipitate. The problem of this thesis is to study the plating prohibitive properties of the various materials commonly used in the manufacturing of separators, and to indicate which material would be most serviceable and feasible in a separator. At one time positives and negatives were kept not more than 0.25 inches apart, with the idea of reducing the intervening layers of electrolyte, and, therefore, the internal resistance of the cell, as much as possible.
