Statistical Methods For Assessing Treatment Effects On Ordinal Outcomes And Selecting Optimal Treatment On Survival Outcomes Using Observational Data., Huirong Hu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of two projects investigating statistical methods in causal inference and personalized medication using observational data. In the first project, we propose a parametric marginal structural ordinal logistic regression model (MS-OLRM) to assess treatment effects on ordinal outcomes. Average treatment effect (ATE) is used to measure the difference of the mean outcomes if all patients would have been treated compared with the outcomes if they would not have been treated. Many statistical methods have been developed to estimate ATE when the outcome is continuous or binary. The methodology on assessing treatment effect for an ordinal outcome is less …

Intercalation And High-Pressure Investigations Of Black Arsenic Phosphorus: Unraveling Material Transformations., Dinushika Vithanage
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Black arsenic phosphorus (b-AsyP1-y) alloys have emerged as intriguing materials within the realm of two-dimensional (2D) materials, following the discovery of black phosphorus (BP). These alloys possess capability to overcome major limitations of BP and exhibit potential for tunability and enhancement of properties making them promising materials for a wide range of applications, including lithium-ion batteries. Inspired by the intriguing findings obtained for BP, this research focuses on understanding the structural modifications that can be achieved in b-AsyP1-y alloys through the application of intercalation and high pressure. The initial phase of our investigation …

The Influence Of Allostery Governing The Changes In Protein Dynamics Upon Substitution, Joseph Hess
All Dissertations
The focus of this research is to investigate the effects of allostery on the function/activity of an enzyme, human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) protease, using well-defined statistical analyses of the dynamic changes of the protein and variants with unique single point substitutions 1. The experimental data1 evaluated here only characterized HIV-1 protease with one of its potential target substrates. Probing the dynamic interactions of the residues of an enzyme and its variants can offer insight of the developmental importance for allosteric signaling and their connection to a protein’s function. The realignment of the secondary structure elements can …

Recent generations of children have been experiencing a decrease in connection to Nature, causing various negative effects on personal development and well-being. Researchers are studying the impact of environmental education programs as a potential resolution to this issue dubbed “nature deficit disorder.” Studies have shown that while citizen science by youth is rapidly expanding, little research addresses conservation science with environmental education. Recognizing this gap, the summer camps at Wells NERR are designed to ensure children’s environmental stewardship as they learn about estuarine ecology alongside environmental issues. This educational study focuses on how environmental education through estuarine activities at summer …

Genetic Programming To Optimize Performance Of Machine Learning Algorithms On Unbalanced Data Set, Asitha Thumpati
Genetic Programming To Optimize Performance Of Machine Learning Algorithms On Unbalanced Data Set, Asitha Thumpati
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Data collected from the real world is often imbalanced, meaning that the distribution of data across known classes is biased or skewed. When using machine learning classification models on such imbalanced data, predictive performance tends to be lower because these models are designed with the assumption of balanced classes or a relatively equal number of instances for each class. To address this issue, we employ data preprocessing techniques such as SMOTE (Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique) for oversampling data and random undersampling for undersampling data on unbalanced datasets. Once the dataset is balanced, genetic programming is utilized for feature selection to …

Expression And Purification Of Polyketide Synthase Domains To Investigate Protein-Protein Interactions In Polyketide Biosynthetic Pathways, Mujeeb Adeyinka Wakeel
Expression And Purification Of Polyketide Synthase Domains To Investigate Protein-Protein Interactions In Polyketide Biosynthetic Pathways, Mujeeb Adeyinka Wakeel
Masters Theses
Polyketide synthases (PKSs) are multienzyme proteins catalyzing the production of the polyketide class of natural products with vast structural diversity. Type II PKSs catalyze polyketide biosynthesis using discrete (standalone) enzymes (domains), while type I PKSs use covalently linked enzymes arranged in a module to catalyze polyketide production. It is hypothesized that type II PKSs are the precursors to type I PKSs, proposing that the genes encoding individual discrete enzymes in type II PKSs fused to give the multienzyme modules of type I PKSs. We reasoned that the intramolecular-like reactions occurring in type I PKS modules might be a driving force …
Algebraic And Integral Closure Of A Polynomial Ring In Its Power Series Ring, Joseph Swanson
Algebraic And Integral Closure Of A Polynomial Ring In Its Power Series Ring, Joseph Swanson
All Dissertations
Let R be a domain. We look at the algebraic and integral closure of a polynomial ring, R[x], in its power series ring, R[[x]]. A power series α(x) ∈ R[[x]] is said to be an algebraic power series if there exists F (x, y) ∈ R[x][y] such that F (x, α(x)) = 0, where F (x, y) ̸ = 0. If F (x, y) is monic, then α(x) is said to be an integral power series. We characterize the units of algebraic and integral power series. We show that the only algebraic power series with infinite radii of convergence are …
Expansion Of The Diazacyclobutene Motif For Antiparasitic Evaluation, Brock Alexander Miller
Expansion Of The Diazacyclobutene Motif For Antiparasitic Evaluation, Brock Alexander Miller
All Dissertations
Molecules containing N-heterocycles are prevalent in pharmaceutical settings. The ability to generate highly functionalized molecules containing N-heterocycles in very few synthetic operations is valuable for drug discovery. Our group has developed a two-step synthesis to access a rarely studied diazacyclobutene scaffold via a formal [2+2] cycloaddition between 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazolinedione and electron-rich thioalkynes. Our interest in this scaffold increased exponentially from promising preliminary biological evaluations against a protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma brucei. While we were able to double the number of historical examples of this scaffold, there were significant limitations in our methodology. The most notable limitations were the lack …

Cosmic Diffuse Neutrino And Gamma-Ray Backgrounds In The Mev Regime, Ilukpitiye Samalka Anandagoda
All Dissertations
Cosmic Multi-Messenger backgrounds include relic diffuse components created in the early Universe and contributions from individual sources. In this dissertation, I present the work done in Anandagoda (2019); Anandagoda et al. (2020, 2023) where type Ia (SNe Ia) and core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) contributions to the diffuse neutrino and gamma-ray backgrounds in the MeV regime are studied. These backgrounds are referred to as DSNB and DSGB respectively. Based on this work, the diffuse SN Ia background is ~106 times lower (for electron antineutrinos) than the CCSN background making it negligible. The predicted DSNB electron antineutrino flux at earth in the …
High-Energy Storm Events And Their Impacts On Carbon Storage In Tidal Wetlands Of South Carolina, Gavin Gleasman
High-Energy Storm Events And Their Impacts On Carbon Storage In Tidal Wetlands Of South Carolina, Gavin Gleasman
All Dissertations
Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have been increasing at an accelerating rate for the past two centuries, profoundly impacting global climate change. Atmospheric CO2 concentrations are influenced by the global carbon cycle through physical and biogeochemical pathways. Tidal wetland environments play a vital role in the global carbon cycle by offsetting atmospheric CO2 concentrations through their natural physiochemical processes of high autotrophic productivity, allochthonous organic matter deposition, anoxic soils, and continuous accretion which promotes carbon sequestration with long-term storage at the land-ocean margin. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and United States Global Change Research …
Recovering Coefficients Of Second-Order Hyperbolic And Plate Equations Via Finite Measurements On The Boundary, Scott Randall Scruggs
Recovering Coefficients Of Second-Order Hyperbolic And Plate Equations Via Finite Measurements On The Boundary, Scott Randall Scruggs
All Dissertations
Abstract In this dissertation, we consider the inverse problem for a second-order hyperbolic equation of recovering n + 3 unknown coefficients defined on an open bounded domain with a smooth enough boundary. We also consider the inverse problem of recovering an unknown coefficient on the Euler- Bernoulli plate equation on a lower-order term again defined on an open bounded domain with a smooth enough boundary. For the second-order hyperbolic equation, we show that we can uniquely and (Lipschitz) stably recover all these coefficients from only using half of the corresponding boundary measurements of their solutions, and for the plate equation, …

Study Of Highly Charged Ion Charge Exchange With Applications To X-Ray Astrophysics, Richard Mattish
All Dissertations
Highly charged ions (HCIs) exist in many hot astrophysical environments where they play an important role in plasma dynamics. Charge exchange involving highly charged ions has been shown to be responsible for many observed X-ray emissions from a variety of astrophysical sources. Proper modeling of these environments requires an understanding of this process, including the electronic structure of each ion species as well as their charge exchange cross sections. This dissertation investigates charge exchange processes with highly charged ions which are present in astrophysical environments via a laboratory-based study.

Composite And Polymer Formulation Employing Sulfur And Bio-Olefin Feedstocks, Claudia V. Lopez
All Dissertations
Environmental sustainability represents a challenge for society since industrial growth has a direct impact on natural resources and waste production. New technologies that effectively incorporate waste into renewable resources are critical to the development of a sustainable and circular economy. The manufacturing of structural materials like Portland cement (OPC) is responsible for >8% of the global anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide, with ~ 1 kg of CO2 released to the atmosphere for every kilogram of OPC produced. For instance, the development of sustainable structural materials is a key factor to reduce the greenhouse emissions and to attenuate the climate …

A Machine Learning Approach To Constructing Ramsey Graphs Leads To The Trahtenbrot-Zykov Problem., Emily Hawboldt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Attempts at approaching the well-known and difficult problem of constructing Ramsey graphs via machine learning lead to another difficult problem posed by Zykov in 1963 (now commonly referred to as the Trahtenbrot-Zykov problem): For which graphs F does there exist some graph G such that the neighborhood of every vertex in G induces a subgraph isomorphic to F? Chapter 1 provides a brief introduction to graph theory. Chapter 2 introduces Ramsey theory for graphs. Chapter 3 details a reinforcement learning implementation for Ramsey graph construction. The implementation is based on board game software, specifically the AlphaZero program and its …

Development And Applications Of Novel And Practical Fluorination Reagents., Yuhao Yang
Development And Applications Of Novel And Practical Fluorination Reagents., Yuhao Yang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The fluorine (F) atom has distinctive properties such as the highest electronegativity, small size, low polarizability, and strong C–F bond strength. Not surprisingly, fluorinated organic compounds have garnered significant attention in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and material fields. Since organofluorides are very rare in nature, we need fluorination reagents to help us transfer fluorine into the organic molecules. In past decades, a vast number of fluorination reagents have been developed and many of them are commercially available now. However, there is still much room for the improvement of these reagents. Our target is to develop novel and practical fluorination reagents to …

This thesis focuses on methods for improving energy consumption prediction performance in complex industrial machines. Working with real-world industrial machines brings several challenges, including data access, algorithmic bias, data privacy, and the interpretation of machine learning algorithms. To effectively manage energy consumption in the industrial sector, it is essential to develop a framework that enhances prediction performance, reduces energy costs, and mitigates air pollution in heavy industrial machine operations. This study aims to assist managers in making informed decisions and driving the transition towards green manufacturing. The energy consumption of industrial machinery is substantial, and the recent increase in CO2 …
New Species Of Dryolestoid From The Late Cretaceous Allen Formation And Implications For South American Faunal Diversity., Brigid Erin Connelly
New Species Of Dryolestoid From The Late Cretaceous Allen Formation And Implications For South American Faunal Diversity., Brigid Erin Connelly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dryolestoids are extinct cladotherians mammals from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. I describe a collection of dryolestoid specimens from the Late Cretaceous localities of Cerro Tortuga (Allen Formation), Anfiteatro 1, and Shining (both La Colonia Formation) from Patagonia, Argentina. Using comparative morphology, I identify a new species of meridiolestidan dryolestoid based on eleven specimens across both formations. The new species’ recovery from La Colonia Formation represents the first dryolestoid connection between the two approximately contemporaneous formations. The species’ morphology may represent an ecological shift within Meridiolestida from insectivory to herbivory, showing a transition in characters between the plesiomorphic sharp-toothed meridiolestidans …

Evaluating Chatgpt For Recommendation: How Does The Ability To Converse Impact Recommendation?, Kyle Spurlock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recommendation algorithms have become an absolute necessity in the modern world to avoid information overload. However, the interaction between the human and the system is largely superficial and without any real contact. If you are given poor recommendations, you have no choice but to sift through mountains of content on your own until the model learns to accommodate your tastes more. This is bad for business as well as the consumer. Recently, large language models like ChatGPT have seen a significant rise in popularity due to their ease of use and wide range of knowledge. It has now become nearly …
New Methodologies For Sustainable Organic Synthesis In Water., Sudripet Sharma
New Methodologies For Sustainable Organic Synthesis In Water., Sudripet Sharma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Water is stable, benign, and green solvent. Its usage as a solvent in organic synthesis is significantly enhanced by micellar catalysis. However, replacing water as a reaction medium in organic synthesis is not sufficient to meet the sustainability challenges—excessive organic solvents are still required for product isolation and purification. Notably, solvents used in syntheses contribute to more than 80% of waste generation. In addition to solvents, the use of palladium in large amounts is also a problem for the future as it is a precious, low-abundance metal, and its supply is dwindling. Therefore, this dissertation highlights the various sustainable protocols …
Penalized Bayesian Exponential Random Graph Models., Vicki Modisette
Penalized Bayesian Exponential Random Graph Models., Vicki Modisette
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Networks have the critical ability to represent the complex interconnectedness of social relationships, biological processes, and the spread of diseases and information. Exponential random graph models (ERGM) are one of the popular statistical methods for analyzing network data. ERGM, however, struggle with computational challenges and degeneracy issues, further exacerbated by their inability to handle high-dimensional network data. Bayesian techniques provide a promising avenue to overcome these two problems. This paper considers penalized Bayesian exponential random graph models with adaptive lasso and adaptive ridge penalties to perform variable selection and reduce multicollinearity on a variety of networks. The experimental results demonstrate …
Null Space Removal In Finite Element Discretizations, Pengfei Jia
Null Space Removal In Finite Element Discretizations, Pengfei Jia
All Theses
Partial differential equations are frequently utilized in the mathematical formulation of physical problems. Boundary conditions need to be applied in order to obtain the unique solution to such problems. However, some types of boundary conditions do not lead to unique solutions because the continuous problem has a null space. In this thesis, we will discuss how to solve such problems effectively. We first review the foundation of all three problems and prove that Laplace problem, linear elasticity problem and Stokes problem can be well posed if we restrict the test and trial space in the continuous and discrete finite element …
Seismic Analysis Of The Upper & Lower Falls Of The Yellowstone River, Loring Schaible
Seismic Analysis Of The Upper & Lower Falls Of The Yellowstone River, Loring Schaible
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Twelve years of concurrent hydrologic and continuous seismic data along with temporary seismic data demonstrate that the Upper and Lower Falls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River comprise a highly localized source of 0.5-5 Hz seismic energy that overwhelms anthropogenic contributions. In aggregate, seismic amplitude from 2008-2019 is linearly related to discharge with a correlation coefficient of 0.96. Repeated deviations from this linear relationship persist for 1-2 weeks prior to the date that Yellowstone Lake becomes clear of winter ice coverage. Seismic efficiency increases by ~50-250% during this period of ice-breakup, during which lake ice flows into the …

Seismic Shadow Zone Investigation In The Upper Magma Reservoir Of The Yellowstone Caldera, Sarah Nolt-Caraway
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
This study investigates whether the Yellowstone Caldera has enough melt to mute S-waves, creating a seismic shadow zone. Using a dense nodal deployment of ~650 stations, 7-9 earthquakes during the nodal deployment, and 21 broadband stations with 3,000-4,000 events per station; amplitude and noise maps, seismograms, and automatic phase picks probabilities from a deep learning model were analyzed to assess the potential role of melt, crustal attenuation, and noise in affecting body waves, particularly S-phases. The results are inconclusive, with unclear evidence whether observed amplitude decay is normal signal decay due to distance, noise-related, melt, or from scattering and intrinsic …
Testing The Niche Center Hypothesis In The Fossil Record Of Atlantic Bivalves, Rhiannon Z. Nolan
Testing The Niche Center Hypothesis In The Fossil Record Of Atlantic Bivalves, Rhiannon Z. Nolan
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Paleoecological analyses of six shallow marine bivalves were conducted to test the Abundant Center Hypothesis using data from the fossil record of the Pleistocene through modern day. This hypothesis predicts the highest abundance of a species is at the center of the geographic or environmental range, decreasing toward the edges. In geographic space, distances to a centerline within a geographic range were variably correlated with population abundances, and some species displayed a sharp drop-off in abundance as distance increased. In environmental space, bivalve species showed moderate correlations between abundance and centrality when measured using cumulative data across the last 2.8 …
Redox-Active Polymerization Catalysts And Their Applications, Nicholas M. Shawver
Redox-Active Polymerization Catalysts And Their Applications, Nicholas M. Shawver
Masters Theses
Traditional catalyst systems are reliable means to produce polymers with well-defined architectures and thermomechanical properties; however, they are often limited by a narrow monomer scope and their ability access few, if any, advanced polymer architectures. To address this limitation, a new class of catalysts have recently emerged that feature redox-active moieties that may access advanced architectures through catalyst electronic modulation that arises from redox events occurring on the ligand scaffold or at the active metal center itself. For example, researchers have explored the ability of redox-active catalysts to impart “on-off” kinetic control during ring-opening polymerizations and their ability to access …
Numerical And Experimental Constraints On Trace Element Fractionation During Lunar Magma Ocean Solidification, Dian Ji
Masters Theses
Traditional lunar magma ocean (LMO) theory suggests the anorthositic lunar crust formed by floating of buoyant plagioclase, one of the major products of LMO solidification, on the surface of LMO. To test this model, after applying experimentally determined LMO solidification sequences, we compared calculated Rare Earth Element (REE) concentrations of lunar plagioclase to plagioclase in Apollo ferroan anorthosites and lunar anorthositic meteorites. Several initial LMO compositions, and lunar-relevant mineral-melt partition coefficient predictive models were tested (where the partition coefficient is the concentration ratio of a specific element between two phases). Compared with plagioclase in the natural samples, modeled plagioclase directly …
