John Muir Newsletter fall 1994 university of the pacific volume 4, number 4 JOHN MUIR'S PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION By Janene Ford Library/Archives Assistant Holt-Atherton Library It is said a picture is worth a thousand words. John Muir could easily turn out a thousand words, but as far as we know he seldom, if ever, used a camera. However, it is evident that Muir recognized and respected the value of visual images. During his lifetime he amassed a collection of nearly 3,000 photographs, many of which were taken by acquaintances and friends such as William Keith, Charles Lummis, Theodore Lukens, Marion Delany, …

Bulletin 4279 - Streamlining - An Environmentally Sustainable Drainage Network For The Swan Coastal Plain (Peel-Harvey Catchment), Garry Heady, Neil Guise
Bulletins 4000 -
Community Catchment Centre Pinjarra
A network of over 1400 kilometres of drains and modified natural waterways constructed by the Public Works Department criss-crosses the Peel-Harvey catchment. There are also over 3300 kilometres of minor drains and natural waterways in this same region.
The expansion of agriculture relied on this extensive drainage network, which was designed to ensure rapid drainage of the region. Unfortunately there was little regard to future environmental consequences.
Along with drainage water, these same drains now carry high loads of silt and nutrients. Many of the drains are also degraded and require expensive maintenance annually.

Brennan (Editor's note: this is the last article in a three-part series by Bill Brennan, Professor of History at the University of the Pacific, a specialist in Russian and Soviet history and foreign policy. For prior articles, see the 1993 fall and winter issues of this newsletter.) John Muir Newsletter spring 1994 university of the pacific volume 4, number 2 JOHN MUIR AND THE FEMINIST MOVEMENT by Ron Limbaugh Was John Muir sympathetic toward 19th century feminism? Did he consider the rights of women worthy of at least the same respect as the rights of animals? Until recently it was not possible to explore these questions because of the lack of primary resources. Before 1970 the subject of Muir and his relationship with women was delicately side-stepped by scholars who were unable to win the confidence of Muir's heirs. Since then a new generation of heirs has …

Bulletin 4283 - Nitrogen Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M. G. Mason
Bulletin 4283 - Nitrogen Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M. G. Mason
Bulletins 4000 -
Because fertiliser prices are high, it is important to understand what affects the response to fertilisers by crops.
Among the many factors influencing crop response to nitrogen applications, the most important are the season, soil type, paddock history, time of application and source of nitrogen. Before deciding whether to use nitrogen on a cereal crop, which source to use and at what rate, you need some understanding of how these factors work.
Greatest responses to nitrogen fertilisers can be expected in areas with a relatively long growing season. In such areas light soils with a low nitrogen status give the …

Bulletin 4278 - How To Use Wide Furrow Sowing For Improved Crop Production On Water Repellent Sand, Paul Blackwell, Grant Morrow, Tony Webster
Bulletins 4000 -
Wide furrow sowing is a method for successfully establishing crops of lupins or cereals on non-wetting sands, and improving crop establishment on non-repellent sands. The same principles can be used to assist establishment of fodder shrubs and long-term pasture (e.g. tagasaste and Rhodes grass).

Is Oberon As Simple As Possible?, Atanas Radenski
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters
The design of the programming language Oberon was led by the quote by Albert Einstein: 'make it as simple as possible, but not simpler'. The objective of this paper is to analyze some design solutions and propose alternatives which could both simplify and strengthen the language without making it simpler than possible. The paper introduces one general concept, the module type, which can be used to represent records, modules, and eventually procedures. Type extension is redefined in terms of component nesting and incomplete designators. As a result, type extension supports multiple inheritance.
