Introduction To Mathematical Analysis I - 2nd Edition, Beatriz Lafferriere, Gerardo Lafferriere, Mau Nam Nguyen

PDXOpen: Open Educational Resources

Video lectures explaining problem solving strategies are available

Our goal in this set of lecture notes is to provide students with a strong foundation in mathematical analysis. Such a foundation is crucial for future study of deeper topics of analysis. Students should be familiar with most of the concepts presented here after completing the calculus sequence. However, these concepts will be reinforced through rigorous proofs.

The lecture notes contain topics of real analysis usually covered in a 10-week course: the completeness axiom, sequences and convergence, continuity, and differentiation. The lecture notes also contain many well-selected exercises of various levels. Although …

Bioenergy And Carbon Farming Opportunities In The Pilbara, Robert Sudmeyer, Kim Brooksbank, David Rogers Dec 2016

Bioenergy And Carbon Farming Opportunities In The Pilbara, Robert Sudmeyer, Kim Brooksbank, David Rogers

Bulletins 4000 -

The Pilbara region covers 270 000 square kilometres of north-west Western Australia. Its main agricultural land use is pastoralism, with beef cattle grazing native pastures. Currently, only 24km2 is under irrigation, with irrigated fodder the principal crop, but this could expand to 100km2. This expansion has the potential to significantly broaden the economic base of the Pilbara.

Irrigation and the opportunities for changing land use and management may facilitate greater participation in the carbon economy by Pilbara land managers. Bioenergy feedstocks could be sourced from purpose-grown crops or agricultural wastes. Carbon farming activities may be facilitated by …

Numerical Methods For Partial Differential Equations, Yang Yang Nov 2016

Numerical Methods For Partial Differential Equations, Yang Yang

TechTalks

Many physical phenomena can be modeled by partial differential equations, such as Euler equations and Navier–Stokes equations. However, most cases, we cannot find the exact solutions, hence numerical methods are needed to approximate them. In my work, I use discontinuous Galerkin methods (a kind of finite element method) and finite volume methods to solve hyperbolic and parabolic equations—especially for problems with strong singularities, such as delta-functions. Moreover, some of the physical bounds will be preserved, such as the positivity of the density, maximum-principle of the velocity etc. Some of the problems I am working on include compressible gas dynamics, miscible …

Molecules, Surfaces, Crystals: A Quantum Chemical Quest From Fundamentals To Applications, Loredana Valenzano Nov 2016

Molecules, Surfaces, Crystals: A Quantum Chemical Quest From Fundamentals To Applications, Loredana Valenzano

TechTalks

My research focuses on applying fundamental laws governing the behavior of molecules and materials to predict their real-world performance. Using state-of-the-art quantum chemical approaches as my tool set, I computationally model a wide range of molecular and condensed-matter systems: explosives, pharmaceuticals, porous materials, catalysts, nanomaterials, polymers, soft-matter, films, membranes, surfaces, interfaces, layered materials; hybrid systems: molecules interacting with substrates; and, their properties: structural, energetic, vibrational, electronic, mechanical, adsorption, diffusion. Chemical processes such as reactivity and the change of properties after exposure to external agents (e.g. durability) can also be explored. The results of my investigations can contribute to speeding up, …

Introducing The New 2d-Liquid Chromatograph And High-Resolution Mass Spectrometer In The Chemical Advanced Resolution Methods (Charm) Core Facility At Michigan Tech, Lynn Mazzoleni

TechTalks

A Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Elite Mass Spectrometer (high-resolution Orbitrap Elite MS) and a Dionex UltiMate 3000 two-dimensional liquid chromatographic (2d LC) system were recently acquired. The Orbitrap Elite MS is a hybrid instrument, which includes a dual pressure linear ion trap MS and a compact high-field Orbitrap MS. The instrument design enables high-quality, fast MSn characterization with ultrahigh resolution measurements (R = 240,000 at m/z 400) for mass measurements with less than 1 ppm mass error. Therefore, the instrument has the qualitative capability to identify molecular formulas and structure and, when paired with modern chromatography, provides quantitative assessment of analytes. …

2D materials have motivated tremendous interest and exciting research avenues in the next-generation medicine and technological perspectives at nanoscale. Biomolecular recognition of an array of probe molecules starting from therapeutic drugs, organic molecules, amino acids, DNA oligonucleotides to highly complex protein assemblies have been realized, that integrates the electronic and optical properties of nanomaterials for myriad applications. Two challenging research areas in application of 2D materials is highlighted in the talk: (1) functionalization of chemotherapeutic biomolecules pyrazinamide and acetaminophen on silicene, SiC, phosphorene, BN and graphene, and (2) self-assembled DNA nucleobase namely guanine on graphene at the substrate-solvent interface. Atomistic …

Enriching Health-Related Research Through Glycobiological Approaches, Tarun K. Dam Nov 2016

Enriching Health-Related Research Through Glycobiological Approaches, Tarun K. Dam

TechTalks

In the Laboratory of Mechanistic Glycobiology at Michigan Technological University, we have been working in four distinct but related areas. Our findings can significantly influence human health-related research. (1) We have documented a molecular strategy that can improve drug designing. (2) We have shown that the tumor-associated protein galectin-3 can create problems in cancer biomarker assays by hiding the biomarkers. (3) In another project, we reported that the role of galectin-3 in cancer could be more complicated than what is reported in the literature. (4) Our team also detected a novel natural product with anti-fungal and anti-cancer activities.

Climate In The Pilbara, Robert Sudmeyer Nov 2016

Climate In The Pilbara, Robert Sudmeyer

Bulletins 4000 -

The Pilbara is characterised by very hot summers, mild winters and low and variable rainfall. It is classified as hot desert in northern and inland areas and hot grasslands in the north-west. The Pilbara claims a number of climate records:

  • seven of Western Australia’s top 10 hottest days, with Mardie recording the hottest day on record — 50.5 degrees Celsius (°C)
  • most sunshine hours a day in Australia (more than 10 hours a day)
  • second highest inter-annual variability in rainfall (second only to central Australia)
  • the most cyclone-prone area along the Australian coastline.

During summer and early autumn (December to …

Trigonometry, Ted Sundstrom, Steven Schlicker Nov 2016

Trigonometry, Ted Sundstrom, Steven Schlicker

Open Textbooks

This trigonometry textbook is different than other trigonometry books in that it is free to download, and the reader is expected to do more than read the book and is expected to study the material in the book by working out examples rather than just reading about them. So this book is not just about mathematical content but is also about the process of learning and doing mathematics. That is, this book is designed not to be just casually read but rather to be engaged.

Since this can be a difficult task, there are several features of the book designed …
