Over the last decade quantum computing has become a very popular field in various disciplines, such as physics, engineering, and mathematics. Most of the attraction stemmed from the famous Shor period--finding algorithm, which leads to an efficient algorithm for factoring positive integers. Many adaptations and generalizations of this algorithm have been developed through the years, some of which have not been ripened with full mathematical rigor. We present results from our analysis of double white dwarf (DWD) binary star systems in the inspiraling and mass-transfer stages of their evolution. Theoretical constraints on the properties of the white dwarf stars allow us to map out the DWD trajectories in the gravitational-wave amplitude-frequency domain and to identify population boundaries that define distinct sub-domains where inspiraling and/or mass-transferring systems will and will not be found. We identify for what subset of these populations it should be possible to measure frequency changes and, hence, directly follow orbit evolutions given the anticipated operational time of the proposed space-based gravitational-wave detector, LISA. …

A number of environmental stressors have been shown to interfere with reproductive and behavioral processes of fish by interfering with endocrine function. Most biomarkers of endocrine disturbance tend to be static measurements from dynamic systems making them difficult to evaluate within the context of an individual, or subtle effects that do not relate well to endpoints of ecological significance. I present an approach that uses a series of models, based on Atlantic croaker, to extrapolate laboratory results to indicators of individual and population health. Protein aggregation occurs under many circumstances, from the dynamic assembly of tubulin to form microtubules, the aggregation of actin into filaments, as well as plaque formation by amyloid precipitation. One important requirement in studying the mechanism of amyloid aggregation is the ability to monitor the growth kinetics over a wide range in size scales (10 nm to microns) with time that spans microseconds to seconds. This work is made of two different parts. The first contains results concerning isospectral quadratic forms, and the second is about regular quadratic forms. Two quadratic forms are said to be isospectral if they have the same representation numbers. In this work, we consider binary and ternary definite integral quadratic form defined over the polynomial ring F[t], where F is a finite field of odd characteristic. Synthesis and characterization of porous inorganic-organic materials have been studied mainly on two linear β-diketone multifunctional ligands: pyridine based pyacH and isocyanide based HacphNC. As a known ligand, the preparation of pyacH has been improved with higher yield. When pyacH reacts with Fe and Al metal salts, trigonal metal β-diketonate building blocks M(pyac)3 are produced. When pyacH reacts with zinc acetate, both trans and cis Zn(pyac)2 are produced, both isomers were isolated and characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Optical holography can produce very realistic virtual images due to its capability to properly convey the depth cues that we use to interpret three-dimensional objects. Computational holography is the use of digital representations plus computational methods to carry out the holographic operations of construction and reconstruction. The large computational requirements of holographic simulations prohibit present-day existence of real-time holographic displays comparable in size to traditional two-dimensional displays. The goal of this dissertation is to (a) establish the weak convergence of empirical measures formed by a system of stochastic differential equations, and (b) prove a comparison result and compactness of support property for the limit measure. In the cycle of delta growth and decay, peat-forming wetlands span a time and space continuum. Later in the delta cycle, freshwater floating marshes become increasingly removed from external sediment subsidy and internal nutrient cycling controls plant productivity and organic matter accumulation. An interesting question is whether increased external nutrient loading can affect the basic processes that lead to peat formation—plant production and organic matter decomposition. High harmonic generation (HHG) is a process in which noble gas atoms excited by an intense laser field at frequency ω1 emit radiation of higher frequencies that are odd integer multiples of ω1. Driven by an infrared laser, high harmonic radiation can span from the optical into the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) frequency range. In this thesis, I study HHG using short laser pulses by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). The thesis is mainly concerned about properties of the so-called Filippov operator that is associated with a differential inclusion x'(t) ε F(x(t)) a.e. t ε [0,T], where F : Rn → Rn is given set-valued map. The operator F produces a new set-valued map F[F], which in effect regularizes F so that F[F] has nicer properties. Louisiana wetlands are disappearing at a dramatic rate, providing an impetus for identifying essential fish habitat (EFH) in this region. The distribution, relative abundance, biomass, length and food web dynamics of spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus, as well as the fish assemblage structure were examined in Barataria Bay, LA, in relation to habitat type and physical/chemical properties of the water. All fish were collected from three sites located along a salinity gradient, each contained the three habitat types of interest: marsh edge, soft bottom and oyster shell, and were sampled monthly from May 2003 to May 2004 with gillnets. This dissertation deals with the synthesis and properties of multidentate β-diketone ligands and their transition-metal complexes. (1) We prepared two bis(β-diketones), C1BAH2 and p-XBAH2 (see sketch below), determined their crystal structures, and studied their reactions with copper(II). We envisioned that they would form macrocyclic complexes with 3-6 metal atoms. In both cases, although the initial products are soluble, as expected for the desired molecular products, we were unable to isolate well-behaved molecular solids. The goal of the research presented in this dissertation is to develop novel water soluble carboranylporphyrins that can deliver therapeutic dosage of boron specifically to tumors for application in boron neutron capture therapy. In order to accomplish this goal novel water soluble tetra(nido-carboranyl)porphyrin and the octa(nido-carboranyl)porphyrin with high boron contents are synthesized by the condensation of the carborane substituted benzaldehyde with the pyrrole under acidic conditions. These porphyrins are made water soluble by the deboronation of the closo-carboranes to afford the corresponding amphiphilic nido-carborane cages. Impulsive systems arise when dynamics produce discontinuous trajectories. Discontinuties occur when movements of states happen over a small interval that resembles a point-mass measure. We adopt the formalism in which the controlled dynamic inclusion is the sum of a slow and a fast time velocities belonging to two distinct vector fields. Fast time velocities are controlled by a vector valued Borel measure. The trajectory of impulsive systems is a function of bounded variation. A chemostratigraphic section across the Paleocene/Eocene boundary, using the stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen, has been developed for North America's most southern exposure of early Paleogene continental deposits in which the boundary is constrained by fossil mammals. A negative carbon excursion has been identified within C24r. The range in d13C values is from -8.1 to -13.2‰. Until the development of the chemostratigraphic section it was uncertain if the earliest Eocene was recorded in Big Bend. An early Wasatchian (Wa1) fossil site occurs stratigraphically higher than the carbon excursion and has yielded the stratigraphically lowest Hyracotherium in the …

The goal of the research presented in this dissertation is to synthesize, characterize, and apply a novel chiral amino acid-based surfactant and achiral sulfate-based surfactants for the effective separations of chiral and achiral compounds in micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC). The first part of this research involves novel synthesis, characterization, and application of polysodium oleyl-L-leucyl-valinate (poly-L-SOLV) for the separation of chiral compounds in MEKC. Surface tensiometry, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, densitometry and analytical ultracentrifugation were used as the characterization techniques. Ihara introduced the zeta function of a finite graph in 1966 in the context of p-adic matrix groups. The idea was generalized to all finite graphs in 1989 by Hashimoto. We will introduce the zeta function from both perspectives and show the equivalence of both forms. We will discuss several properties of finite graphs that are determined by the zeta function and show by counterexample several properties of finite graphs that are not determined by the zeta function. We will also discuss the relationship between the zeta function of a finite graph and the spectrum of a finite graph.

This dissertation discusses algorithmic and implementation aspects of an automatically configurable remote visualization system, which optimally decomposes and adaptively maps the visualization pipeline to a wide-area network. Louisiana is the leading state in number of river otters used in reintroduction programs in other states and in the production of pelts. However, habitat loss and degradation have prompted concern about the status of otter populations. This dissertation undertakes a spatial and temporal analysis of river otter harvest activity and examines environmental factors related to monitoring mercury levels in streams in Louisiana. Molecular recognition in molecularly imprinting polymers (MIPs) is governed by two mechanisms: pre-organization of functional groups and shape specificity of the binding site. While pre-organization of functional groups has been studied extensively, shape specificity of the binding site has not been rigorously explored.
