Novel Design And Synthesis Of Transition Metal Hydroxides And Oxides For Energy Storage Device Applications, Peifeng Li Jan 2016

Novel Design And Synthesis Of Transition Metal Hydroxides And Oxides For Energy Storage Device Applications, Peifeng Li

Wayne State University Theses

Supercapacitors (SCs) and Li-ion batteries (LIBs) are two types of important electrical energy storage devices with high power density and high energy density respectively. However, to satisfy the increasing demand of high-performance energy storage devices, the energy density of SCs and power/energy densities of LIBs have to be further improved. The exploration, research, and development of electrode materials with high-performance for applications in SCs and LIBs are still needed to meet the ever-increasing demand on energy and power densities. Herein, the amorphous Ni-Co-Mo ternary hydroxides nanoflakes for SCs and oxides nanoflakes for LIBs with ultrathin stature, abundant open spaces, and …

Targeted Delivery Of Nrf2 Sirna Using Modular Polymeric Micellar Nanodelivery System For Efficient Target Gene Knockdown In Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Shaimaa Mohamed Ibrahim Yousef

Wayne State University Theses

Tumor selective drug delivery as well as chemotherapy associated multi drug resistance (MDR) pose tremendous hurdles for effective cancer therapy. In this regard, designing multifunctional nanocarriers loaded with drug/gene payloads and engineered with tumor targeting ligands can serve as a modular platform for targeted drug/gene delivery. In this study we undertook the synthesis of a self-assembling block copolymer constructed using poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride, partial iso-octyl ester) (SMAPIE) and branched polyethylenimine (PEI) as building blocks and evaluated its micelle forming ability, siRNA complexation and siRNA delivery potentials. In addition, we engineered galactosamine decorated nanomicelles using modular “click” chemistry based approaches for evaluating …

Enhanced Pump Schedule Optimization For Large Water Distribution Networks To Maximize Environmental And Economic Benefits, Seyed Mohsen Sadatiyan Abkenar Jan 2016

Enhanced Pump Schedule Optimization For Large Water Distribution Networks To Maximize Environmental And Economic Benefits, Seyed Mohsen Sadatiyan Abkenar

Wayne State University Dissertations

For more than four decades researchers tried to develop optimization method and tools to reduce electricity consumption of pump stations of water distribution systems. Based on this ongoing research trend, about a decade ago, some commercial pump operation optimization software introduced to the market. Using metaheuristic and evolutionary techniques (e.g. Genetic Algorithm) make some commercial and research tools able to optimize the electricity cost of small water distribution systems (WDS). Still reducing the environmental footprint of these systems and dealing with large and complicated water distribution system is a challenge.

In this study, we aimed to develop a multiobjective optimization …

User-Centric Power Management For Mobile Operating Systems, Hui Chen Jan 2016

User-Centric Power Management For Mobile Operating Systems, Hui Chen

Wayne State University Dissertations

The power consumption of mobile devices must be carefully managed to provide a satisfied battery life to users. This target, however, recently has become more and more difficult to complete. We still cannot expect the battery life problem be solved economically shortly, even though researchers already addressed many aspects of this problem. Principally, that's because existing power management systems, which concentrate on controlling hardware power states, cannot effectively make these hardware components work in low-power mode. Why is this the case?

Based on our analysis of 14 users' device usage trace, we found that background applications generate too many activities …

Dynamic Privacy Management In Services Based Interactions, Nariman Tm Ammar Jan 2016

Dynamic Privacy Management In Services Based Interactions, Nariman Tm Ammar

Wayne State University Dissertations

Technology advancements have enabled the distribution and sharing of users personal data over several data sources. Each data source is potentially managed by a different organization, which may expose its data as a Web service. Using such Web services, dynamic composition of atomic data items coupled with the context in which the data is accessed may breach sensitive data that may not comply with the users preference at the time of data collection. Thus, providing uniform access policies to such data can lead to privacy problems. Some fairly recent research has focused on providing solutions for dynamic privacy management. This …

Distribution-Free Trends Test To Determine The Construct Validity Of An Anti-Social Criminal Attitudes Scale, Holly Ann Child Jan 2016

Distribution-Free Trends Test To Determine The Construct Validity Of An Anti-Social Criminal Attitudes Scale, Holly Ann Child

Wayne State University Dissertations

The Sawilosky's I-Test was developed to as an alternative method to evaluate construct validity, more specifically, in regards to the Multitrait-Multimethod Matrix designed by Campbell and Fiske (1959). Typically, researchers use a method by Campbell and Fiske that involves a subjective “physical” look at the matrix to determine validity. Sawilowsky’s I-Test offers a statistical approach that incorporates the current practice but removes the subjectivity involved in this process.

There are only two existing studies that look at the I-Test, Sawilowsky in 2002 and Cuzzocrea in 2007. Both studies found that although the I-Test is not a perfect statistic, it provides …

Automated Negotiation Among Web Services, Khayyam Hashmi

Wayne State University Dissertations

Software as a service is well accepted software deployment and distribution model that is grown exponentially in the last few years. One of the biggest benefits of SaaS is the automated composition of these services in a composite system. It allows users to automatically find and bind these services, as to maximize the productivity of their composed systems, meeting both functional and non-functional requirements. In this paper we present a framework for modeling the dependency relationship of different Quality of Service parameters of a component service. Our proposed approach considers the different invocation patterns of component services in the system …

System Support For Energy Efficient Mobile Computing, Youhuizi Li Jan 2016

System Support For Energy Efficient Mobile Computing, Youhuizi Li

Wayne State University Dissertations

Mobile devices are developed rapidly and they have been an integrated part of our daily life. With the blooming of Internet of Things, mobile computing will become more and more important. However, the battery drain problem is a critical issue that hurts user experience. High performance devices require more power support, while the battery capacity only increases 5% per year on average. Researchers are working on kinds of energy saving approaches. For examples, hardware components provide different power state to save idle power; operating systems provide power management APIs to better control power dissipation. However, the system energy efficiency is …

Essays On Oil Price Volatility And Irreversible Investment, Daniel Joseph Pastor Jan 2016

Essays On Oil Price Volatility And Irreversible Investment, Daniel Joseph Pastor

Wayne State University Dissertations

In chapter 1, we provide an extensive and systematic evaluation of the relative

forecasting performance of several models for the volatility of daily spot

crude oil prices. Empirical research over the past decades has uncovered

significant gains in forecasting performance of Markov Switching GARCH

models over GARCH models for the volatility of financial assets and crude

oil futures. We find that, for spot oil price returns, non-switching models

perform better in the short run, whereas switching models tend to do better

at longer horizons.

In chapter 2, I investigate the impact of volatility on firms' irreversible investment decisions using real …

Novel Regression Models For High-Dimensional Survival Analysis, Yan Li Jan 2016

Novel Regression Models For High-Dimensional Survival Analysis, Yan Li

Wayne State University Dissertations

Survival analysis aims to predict the occurrence of specific events of interest at future time points. The presence of incomplete observations due to censoring brings unique challenges in this domain and differentiates survival analysis techniques from other standard regression methods. In this thesis, we propose four models to deal with the high-dimensional survival analysis. Firstly, we propose a regularized linear regression model with weighted least-squares to handle the survival prediction in the presence of censored instances. We employ the elastic net penalty term for inducing sparsity into the linear model to effectively handle high-dimensional data. As opposed to the existing …

Novel Machine Learning Methods For Modeling Time-To-Event Data, Bhanukiran Vinzamuri Jan 2016

Novel Machine Learning Methods For Modeling Time-To-Event Data, Bhanukiran Vinzamuri

Wayne State University Dissertations

Predicting time-to-event from longitudinal data where different events occur at different time points is an extremely important problem in several domains such as healthcare, economics, social networks and seismology, to name a few. A unique challenge in this problem involves building predictive models from right censored data (also called as survival data). This is a phenomenon where instances whose event of interest are not yet observed within a given observation time window and are considered to be right censored. Effective models for predicting time-to-event labels from such right censored data with good accuracy can have a significant impact in these …

Design Of First-Row Transition Metal Bis(Alkoxide) Complexes And Their Reactivity Toward Nitrene And Carbene Transfer, James Bellow Jan 2016

Design Of First-Row Transition Metal Bis(Alkoxide) Complexes And Their Reactivity Toward Nitrene And Carbene Transfer, James Bellow

Wayne State University Dissertations

The novel alkoxide ligand [OCtBu2Ph], or [OR], was synthesized in a single step as a lithium salt. It was then reacted with a series of first-row transition metal(II) halides, with widely varying results. Upon reaction with chromium, manganese, iron, or cobalt(II) chloride, dimeric complexes of the form M2(OR)4Li2Cl2 were formed, which displayed rare seesaw geometry at the metal. This unusual geometry was confirmed by various spectroscopic and computational studies. Computational studies also indicate that the steric bulk of the ligand, as well as the inclusion of lithium atoms in the molecules, are what lead to the seesaw geometry. Reaction of …

Identification Of Lead-Sensitive Expression And Splicing Quantitative Trait Loci In Drosophila Melanogaster By Analysis Of Rna-Seq Data, Wen Qu

Wayne State University Dissertations

Lead exposure has long been one of the most important topics in global public health since it is a potent developmental neurotoxin. Here, we conducted an expression QTL (eQTLs) analysis, which is genome-wide association analysis of genetic variants with differential gene expression, in the male heads of 79 Drosophila melanogaster recombinant inbred lines originally from eight parental strains in the presence or absence of developmental exposure to 250 µM lead acetate. The aim was to study the effects of lead exposure on gene expression and identify the lead-responsive genes. After detecting 1,536 cis-eQTLs and 952 trans-eQTLs (1000 permutation threshold at …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Properties Of Peroxo-Based Oxygen-Rich Compounds For Potential Use As Greener High Energy Density Materials, Nipuni-Dhanesha Horadugoda Gamage Jan 2016

Synthesis, Characterization, And Properties Of Peroxo-Based Oxygen-Rich Compounds For Potential Use As Greener High Energy Density Materials, Nipuni-Dhanesha Horadugoda Gamage

Wayne State University Dissertations

One main aspect of high energy density material (HEDM) design is to obtain greener alternatives for HEDMs that produce toxic byproducts. Primary explosives lead azide, lead styphnate, and mercury fulminate contain heavy metals that cause heavy metal poisoning. Leaching of the widely used tertiary explosive NH4ClO4 into groundwater has resulted in human exposure to ClO4– ions, which cause disruptions of thyroid related metabolic pathways and even thyroid cancer. Many research efforts to find replacements have gained little success. Thus, there is a need for greener HEDMs. Peroxo-based oxygen-rich compounds are proposed as a potential new class of greener HEDMs due …

A Topological Study Of Stochastic Dynamics On Cw Complexes, Michael Joseph Catanzaro Jan 2016

A Topological Study Of Stochastic Dynamics On Cw Complexes, Michael Joseph Catanzaro

Wayne State University Dissertations

In this dissertation, we consider stochastic motion of subcomplexes of a CW complex, and explore the implications on the underlying space. The random process on the complex is motivated from Ito diffusions on smooth manifolds and Langevin processes in physics. We associate a Kolmogorov equation to this process, whose solutions can be interpretted in terms of generalizations of electrical, as well as stochastic, current to higher dimensions. These currents also serve a key function in relating the random process to the topology of the complex. We show the average current generated by such a process can be written in a …

Development Of Single And Array Electro-Chemical Sensors For Real-Time Trace Metal Analysis In Aqueous Environmental Media, Yuanyuan Yang Jan 2016

Development Of Single And Array Electro-Chemical Sensors For Real-Time Trace Metal Analysis In Aqueous Environmental Media, Yuanyuan Yang

Wayne State University Dissertations

Detection of trace metals has great importance in environmental and biological applications. While traditional electrochemical techniques have played critical roles in this field, their usefulness is limited by temporal resolution, Hg toxicity and stability concerns. Recently, we developed a method using fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) at carbon-fiber microelectrodes (CFMs) to achieve rapid measurement of metal ions with high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. Through optimizations this method showed strengths in real-time trace metal analysis. ‬‬‬‬‬‬

‪Analytical selectivity was improved via covalent functionalization on CFMs. We employed diazonium electrochemical reduction followed by click chemistry to create robust covalent attachments. We showcased its …

Mobile Mud Dynamics In The East China Sea Elucidated Using 210pb, 137cs, 7be, And 234th As Tracers, Jinlong Wang, Jinzhou Du, Mark Baskaran, Jing Zhang Dec 2015

Mobile Mud Dynamics In The East China Sea Elucidated Using 210pb, 137cs, 7be, And 234th As Tracers, Jinlong Wang, Jinzhou Du, Mark Baskaran, Jing Zhang

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications

“Mobile mud” (MM), which has fine grain size distribution (>90% clay + silt, and <5% sand) and high porosity (≥0.50), plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycles in the estuarine areas and the inshore shelf. A suite of MM samples from the coastal area of the East China Sea (ECS) was collected in spring and summer of 2011 to observe their spatial and temporal distribution, grain size, and radionuclides concentrations. The MM thickness ranged from 0.5 to 11 cm (average: 2.2 cm (May) and 3.9 cm (August)). The thick mud layer is mainly distributed along the coast, with an area of 2.2 × 104 km2 in May and 1.5 × 104 km2 in August, with corresponding masses of 8.8 × 108 and 7.8 × 108 t, respectively. The estimated masses of MM are considerably larger than the annual sediment discharge mass of the Changjiang River. The distribution of 137Cs inventories in MM indicates that 137Cs can be effectively utilized as a transport tracer of MM in the river‐dominated estuaries and coastal areas. The higher inventories of 7Be in MM in the river mouth in spring are attributed to higher depositional flux and higher sediment discharge. The ratio of the MM inventory of 234Thex/production in the overlying water column of >2.5 in south inshore indicates that the sediment focusing resulted in the increased mass flux. The residence time of MM is estimated as 3–6 years both by mass balance of MM and 210Pbex in MM.

Understanding Acceptable Level Of Risk: Incorporating The Economic Cost Of Under-Managing Invasive Species, Alisha D. Davidson, Chad L. Hewitt, Donna R. Kashian Nov 2015

Understanding Acceptable Level Of Risk: Incorporating The Economic Cost Of Under-Managing Invasive Species, Alisha D. Davidson, Chad L. Hewitt, Donna R. Kashian

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications

Management of nonindigenous species includes prevention, early detection and rapid response and control. Early detection and rapid response depend on prioritizing and monitoring sites at risk for arrival or secondary spread of nonindigenous species. Such monitoring efforts require sufficient biosecurity budgets to be effective and meet management or policy directives for reduced risk of introduction. Such consideration of risk reduction is rarely considered, however. Here, we review the concepts of acceptable level of risk (ALOR) and associated costs with respect to nonindigenous species and present a framework for aligning risk reduction priorities with available biosecurity resources. We conclude that available …

New Entropy Estimators With Smaller Root Mean Squared Error, Amer Ibrahim Al-Omari Nov 2015

New Entropy Estimators With Smaller Root Mean Squared Error, Amer Ibrahim Al-Omari

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

New estimators of entropy of continuous random variable are suggested. The proposed estimators are investigated under simple random sampling (SRS), ranked set sampling (RSS), and double ranked set sampling (DRSS) methods. The estimators are compared with Vasicek (1976) and Al-Omari (2014) entropy estimators theoretically and by simulation in terms of the root mean squared error (RMSE) and bias values. The results indicate that the suggested estimators have less RMSE and bias values than their competing estimators introduced by Vasicek (1976) and Al-Omari (2014).

An Empirical Study On Different Ranking Methods For Effective Data Classification, Ilangovan Sangaiah, A. Vincent Antony Kumar, Appavu Balamurugan

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Ranking is the attribute selection technique used in the pre-processing phase to emphasize the most relevant attributes which allow models of classification simpler and easy to understand. It is a very important and a central task for information retrieval, such as web search engines, recommendation systems, and advertisement systems. A comparison between eight ranking methods was conducted. Ten different learning algorithms (NaiveBayes, J48, SMO, JRIP, Decision table, RandomForest, Multilayerperceptron, Kstar) were used to test the accuracy. The ranking methods with different supervised learning algorithms give different results for balanced accuracy. It was shown the selection of ranking methods could be …

Caution For Software Use Of New Statistical Methods (R), Akiva J. Lorenz, Barry S. Markman, Shlomo Sawilowsky

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Open source programming languages such as R allow statisticians to develop and rapidly disseminate advanced procedures, but sometimes at the expense of a proper vetting process. A new example is the least trimmed squares regression available in R’s lqs() in the MASS library. It produces pretty regression lines, particularly in the presence of outliers. However, this procedure lacks a defined standard error, and thus it should be avoided.

Inferences About The Skipped Correlation Coefficient: Dealing With Heteroscedasticity And Non-Normality, Rand Wilcox Nov 2015

Inferences About The Skipped Correlation Coefficient: Dealing With Heteroscedasticity And Non-Normality, Rand Wilcox

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A common goal is testing the hypothesis that Pearson’s correlation is zero and typically this is done based on Student’s T test. There are, however, several well-known concerns. First, Student’s T is sensitive to heteroscedasticity. That is, when it rejects, it is reasonable to conclude that there is dependence, but in terms of making a decision about the strength of the association, it is unsatisfactory. Second, Pearson’s correlation is not robust: it can poorly reflect the strength of the association. Even a single outlier can have a tremendous impact on the usual estimate of Pearson’s correlation, which can result in …
