Parameter Assignment And Schedulability Analysis For Real-Time Multiframe Task Systems, Bo Peng
Parameter Assignment And Schedulability Analysis For Real-Time Multiframe Task Systems, Bo Peng
Wayne State University Dissertations
Schedulability analysis has been considered as one of the most important subjects in real-time systems. Schedulability analysis decides whether all tasks work correctly and safely in a system. For example, the schedulability analysis of an Air Traffic Control (ATC) system should ensure that all airplanes do not have conflicts on departure lanes and are scheduled on time. In a modern car system, it has been shown that there are more than one hundred engine control units (ECUs), and more than twenty million lines of code in a typical modern car [19]. The scheduling of such complex systems is required to …

Diffusion Of Gold Nanoparticles Within Polymer Solutions And Gels, Kavindya Kumari Senanayake R W H
Wayne State University Dissertations
Soft matter is a subfield of condensed matter physics including systems, such as polymers, colloidal dispersions, liquid crystals, surfactants. Understanding their interaction and dynamics is essential for many interdisciplinary fields of study as well as important for technological advancements. We used gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to investigate the length-scale dependent dynamics in dilute, semidilute, entangled polymer solutions and gels. Two-photon fluctuation correlation spectroscopy (FCS) technique was used to investigate the translation diffusion coefficient of AuNPs. For polymer solutions, we found that existing hydrodynamic and obstruction models are inadequate to describe the size dependence of the particle diffusion coefficient. Within entangled Poly …

Wayne State University Dissertations
Soft matter is a subfield of condensed matter physics that includes the study of colloidal dynamics. This is important in multidisciplinary fields for technological and medical advancements. My research focused on quantifying the dynamics of nano and micron-sized particles within various media using two-photon fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and differential dynamic microscopy (DDM). FCS is a single photon sensitive technique that detects spontaneous fluctuations in fluorescence during dynamical processes over time while DDM used optical microscopy to analyze the colloidal motion in Fourier space. The diffusion coefficient (D) of 25 nm radii particles within aqueous entangled solutions of polyethylene oxide …
Nonadiabatic Dynamics: A Semiclassical Approach, Ruixi Wang
Nonadiabatic Dynamics: A Semiclassical Approach, Ruixi Wang
Wayne State University Dissertations
Nonadiabatic dynamics has been an essential part of quantum chemistry since the 1930’s. Nonadiabatic effects play a crucial role in photo-physical and photo-chemical reactions for both small and large molecules in both gas and condensed phases. Modeling dynamics of photoinduced reactions has been a new frontier of chemistry. Many dynamical phenomena, such as intersystem crossing, non-radiative relaxation, and charge energy transfer, require a nonadiabatic description which incorporates transitions between electronic states.
In Chapter 2, the property of scattering region in the semiclassical limit is investigated. We suggest that a nuclear wavepacket close enough to the conical intersection will propagate ballistically …
Data Driven Approach To Characterize And Forecast The Impact Of Freeway Work Zones On Mobility Using Probe Vehicle Data, Mohsen Kamyab
Data Driven Approach To Characterize And Forecast The Impact Of Freeway Work Zones On Mobility Using Probe Vehicle Data, Mohsen Kamyab
Wayne State University Dissertations
The presence of work zones on freeways causes traffic congestion and creates hazardous conditions for commuters and construction workers. Traffic congestion resulting from work zones causes negative impacts on traffic mobility (delay), the environment (vehicle emissions), and safety when stopped or slowed vehicles become vulnerable to rear-end collisions. Addressing these concerns, a data-driven approach was utilized to develop methodologies to measure, predict, and characterize the impact work zones have on Michigan interstates. This study used probe vehicle data, collected from GPS devices in vehicles, as the primary source for mobility data. This data was used to fulfill three objectives: develop …

Jet Geometry Engineering Via Di-Jet Imbalance Measurements At Rhic In Star, Nicholas Elsey
Wayne State University Dissertations
Ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions produced at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a new state of matter of deconfined quarks and gluons (partons) called the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). This plasma of deconfined but strongly coupled partons is believed to have been the primary state of matter in the universe up to a few milliseconds after the Big Bang. High energy partons produced in hard scatterings early in the collision can be used to probe the entire lifetime of the QGP. These partons propagate through and interact with the QGP before fragmenting into collimated …
Integrating Heuristics To Support Impact Analysis In Software Evolution, Yibin Wang
Integrating Heuristics To Support Impact Analysis In Software Evolution, Yibin Wang
Wayne State University Dissertations
Iterative impact analysis (IIA) is a process that allows developers to estimate the impacted units of a software change. Starting from a single impacted unit, the developers inspect its interacting units via program dependencies to identify the ones that are also impacted, and this process continues iteratively. Experience has shown that developers often miss impacted units and inspect many irrelevant units.
In order to enhance IIA, first we put forward a new program representation that provides more precise dependencies for software change propagation. Our study showed that the precision of IIA was indeed improved using such a program representation while …
Balance Functions Of Charged Hadron Pairs $(\Pi,K,P)\Otimes (\Pi,K,P)$ In Pb--Pb Collisions At $\Sqrt{S_{_{\Rm Nn}}} =$2.76 Tev, Jinjin Pan
Wayne State University Dissertations
We present the first balance function (BF) measurement of charged hadron pairs $(\pi,K,p)\otimes (\pi,K,p)$ in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} =$2.76 TeV.
The BF measurements are carried out as two-dimensional (2D) differential correlators vs. the relative rapidity ($\Delta y$) and azimuthal angle ($\Delta\varphi$) of hadron pairs, and studied as a function of collision centrality. While the BF azimuthal widths of all pairs substantially decrease from peripheral to central collisions, the longitudinal widths exhibit mixed behaviors: BF of $\pi\pi$ and cross-species pairs narrow in more central collisions whereas those of $KK$ and $pp$ are found invariant with collision centrality. This dichotomy …

Thermosensitive phosphors are solid-state materials that demonstrate distinct dependence of luminescence emission on temperature. These materials enable optical temperature sensing in environments where conventional thermometry is not possible (e.g., gas turbines, combustion engines, surface temperature distributions). However, the design of thermosensitive phosphors that show adequate sensitivity and low thermal quenching in the intermediate temperature range (i.e., 500–1000 K) remains challenging. This challenge can be addressed by understanding how to rationally manipulate the …

Data-Driven Intelligent Scheduling For Long Running Workloads In Large-Scale Datacenters, Guoyao Xu
Wayne State University Dissertations
Cloud computing is becoming a fundamental facility of society today. Large-scale public or private cloud datacenters spreading millions of servers, as a warehouse-scale computer, are supporting most business of Fortune-500 companies and serving billions of users around the world. Unfortunately, modern industry-wide average datacenter utilization is as low as 6% to 12%. Low utilization not only negatively impacts operational and capital components of cost efficiency, but also becomes the scaling bottleneck due to the limits of electricity delivered by nearby utility. It is critical and challenge to improve multi-resource efficiency for global datacenters.
Additionally, with the great commercial success of …

Switching Diffusions: Applications To Ecological Models, And Numerical Methods For Games In Insurance, Trang Thi-Huyen Bui
Wayne State University Dissertations
Recently, a class of dynamic systems called ``hybrid systems" containing both continuous dynamics and discrete events has been adapted to treat a wide variety of situations arising in many real-world situations. Motivated by such development, this dissertation is devoted to the study of dynamical systems involving a Markov chain as the randomly switching process. The systems studied include hybrid competitive Lotka-Volterra ecosystems and non-zero-sum stochastic differential games between two insurance companies with regime-switching.
The first part is concerned with competitive Lotka-Volterra model with Markov switching. A novelty of the contribution is that the Markov chain has a countable state space. …

Synthesis, Structure, And Luminescence Properties Of Rare-Earth-Doped Alkaline-Earth Fluorohalide Upconverting Nanocrystals, Kumuduni Tauni Dissanayake
Wayne State University Dissertations
The major scientific problems that associated with the state-of-the-art upconverting nanocrystal system (rare-earth-doped β-NaYF4) are lower quantum efficiency, lack of full-spectrum color tunability, and difficulty in achieving single-band red emission. The major scientific strategies that employed to address these scientific problems are based on nanostructuring, tuning rare-earth concentration, and tuning host chemical composition. The reported articles during the past few decades clearly illustrated that nanostructuring and tuning rare-earth concentration hadn’t bought considerable contribution to synthesize efficient and color-tunable upconverting nanocrystal systems. However, the ability to tune the chemical composition of the host to design efficient and color-tunable upconverting nanocrystal system …

Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) amounts for 10% of the world energy which will keep on growing in the future and 3% of the overall carbon footprint which is now more than the level of CO2 emission as that of the aviation industry. For many past years, the focus was on hardware to optimize the energy consumption of ICT systems. This includes dynamic adaptation of hardware techniques such as fine-grain clock gating, power gating, and dynamic voltage/frequency scaling. However, recent demands of exascale computation, as well as the increasing carbon footprint, require new breakthroughs to make ICT systems more energy-efficient. …

Numerical Approaches To A Thermoelastic Kirchhoff-Love Plate System, Zeyu Zhou
Wayne State University Dissertations
In this work, theory background of the sobolev spaces and finite element spaces are
reviewed first. Then the details of how the thermoelastic Kirchhoff-Love(KL) plates numerically established are presented. Later we approaches to the thermoelastic KL system numerically with mixed element method, H^1−Galerkin method and interior penalty discontinuous galerkin method(IP-DG).
What is more, the SIP-DG also applied to solve this KL system numerically. The well-posedness, existence, uniqueness and convergence properties are theoretical analyzed. The gain of the convergence rate is also O(h^k), that is 1 less than the observed convergence rate.
When discussing the H1-Galerkin method, the main advantages over …
Spectral Methods For Hamiltonian Systems And Their Applications, Lewei Zhao
Spectral Methods For Hamiltonian Systems And Their Applications, Lewei Zhao
Wayne State University Dissertations
Hamiltonian systems typically arise as models of conservative physical systems and have many applications. Our main emphasis is using spectral methods to preserve both symplectic structure and energy up to machine error in long time. An engery error estimation is given for a type of Hamiltonian systems with polynomial nonlinear part, which is numerical verified by solving a Henon-Heiles systems. Three interesting applications are presented : the first one is the N-body problems. The second one is approximation for Weyl's Law and the third one is simulating quantum cooling in an optomechanical system to study the dissipative dynamics. Moreover, nonsmooth …
Effective And Efficient Preemption Placement For Cache Overhead Minimization In Hard Real-Time Systems, John Cavicchio
Effective And Efficient Preemption Placement For Cache Overhead Minimization In Hard Real-Time Systems, John Cavicchio
Wayne State University Dissertations
Schedulability analysis for real-time systems has been the subject of prominent research over the past several decades. One of the key foundations of schedulability analysis is an accurate worst case execution time (WCET) for each task. In preemption based real-time systems, the CRPD can represent a significant component (up to 44% as documented in research literature) of variability to overall task WCET. Several methods have been employed to calculate CRPD with significant levels of pessimism that may result in a task set erroneously declared as non-schedulable. Furthermore, they do not take into account that CRPD cost is inherently a function …

An Empirical Study On Deterministic Collusive Attack Using Inter Component Communication In Android Applications, Tanzeer Hossain
Wayne State University Theses
Security threats using intent based inter component communication (ICC) channels in Android are under constant scrutiny of software engineering researchers. Though prior research provides empirical evidence on the existence of collusive communication channels in popular android apps, little is known about developers’willful involvement and motivation to exploit these channels. To shed light on this matter, in this paper we devised a novel methodology to deterministically identify developers’ involvement in establishing collusive inter app communication channels. We incorporate static analysis and relational database technology to discover sensitive collusive channels and domain knowledge of the Android SDK to build a model to identify …

Methods For Classification Of Consumer Review Into The Ones Written Before Or After The Product Purchase, Md Mehedi Hasan
Wayne State University Theses
Online consumer reviews provide a wealth of information about products and services that, if properly identified and extracted, could be of immense value to businesses. While classification of reviews according to sentiment polarity has been extensively studied in previous work, many more focused types of review analysis remain open problems. In this work, we introduce a novel text classification problem of separating post-purchase from pre-purchase consumer review fragments that can facilitate identification of immediate actionable insights based on the feedback from the customers, who actually purchased and own a product. To address this problem, we propose the features, which are …

Teachers’ daily instructional practices are a critical component in creating a rich and meaningful educational experience for students. Thus, factors that inform instructional practices are of particular importance and interest to education researchers and other stakeholders. Beliefs about teaching and learning are a known factor influencing teachers’ instructional practices (Ernest, 1989). This study focused on a specific instructional practice, question-asking, which has a profound impact on students’ experience with mathematics (Weiland, Hudson, and Amador (2014). Understanding the relationship between teachers’ beliefs and practice helps to make sense of teachers’ decision-making processes, particularly as they choose questions to ask students during …

Purpose: Monte Carlo-based log file quality assurance (LF-MC QA) is investigated as an alternative method to phantom-based patient-specific quality assurance in radiotherapy (e.g. ArcCHECK QA (AC QA)).
Methods: First, the shortcomings of AC QA were investigated. The sensitivity dependence of ArcCHECK diodes on dose rate (in-field) and energy (primarily out-of-field) was quantified. LF-MC QA was then analyzed on the phantom geometry. Planned (‘Plan’) and LF-reconstructed CS and MC doses were compared with each other and AC measurement via statistical (mean ± StdDev(σ)) and gamma analyses to isolate dosimetric uncertainties and quantify the relative accuracies of AC QA and LF-MC QA. …

Molecular Exchange Monte Carlo. A Generalized Method For Identity Exchanges In Grand Canonical Monte Carlo Simulations, Mohammad Soroush Barhaghi
Wayne State University Theses
A generalized identity exchange algorithm is presented for Monte Carlo simulations in the grand canonical ensemble. The algorithm, referred to as Molecular Exchange Monte Carlo (MEMC), may be applied to multicomponent systems of arbitrary molecular topology, and provides significant enhancements in the sampling of phase space over a wide range of compositions and temperatures. Three different approaches are presented for the insertion of large molecules, and the pros and cons of each method are discussed. The performance of the algorithms is highlighted through grand canonical Monte Carlo histogram-reweighting simulations performed on several systems, including 2,2,4-trimethylpentane+neopentane, butane+perfluorobutane, methane+n-alkanes, and water+impurity. Relative …

In recent years, users and organizations started switching from workstation- based applications to Web services also known as cloud services. Web services offer many advantages such as cost of use and maintenance. Web services follow the pay- per-use pricing model so the users pay for their usage only. Due to the huge number of services, a composition optimization mechanism is needed to help the users find the best service/set of services for their application/s. On the other hand, service providers look for generating the highest profit possible from the offered services. In this dissertation, we address the problem from both …
