Adaptive Remote Visualization System With Optimized Network Performance For Large Scale Scientific Data, Mengxia Zhu Jan 2005

Adaptive Remote Visualization System With Optimized Network Performance For Large Scale Scientific Data, Mengxia Zhu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation discusses algorithmic and implementation aspects of an automatically configurable remote visualization system, which optimally decomposes and adaptively maps the visualization pipeline to a wide-area network. The first node typically serves as a data server that generates or stores raw data sets and a remote client resides on the last node equipped with a display device ranging from a personal desktop to a powerwall. Intermediate nodes can be located anywhere on the network and often include workstations, clusters, or custom rendering engines. We employ a regression model-based network daemon to estimate the effective bandwidth and minimal delay of a …

Learning Discrete Hidden Markov Models From State Distribution Vectors, Luis G. Moscovich Jan 2005

Learning Discrete Hidden Markov Models From State Distribution Vectors, Luis G. Moscovich

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are probabilistic models that have been widely applied to a number of fields since their inception in the late 1960’s. Computational Biology, Image Processing, and Signal Processing, are but a few of the application areas of HMMs. In this dissertation, we develop several new efficient learning algorithms for learning HMM parameters. First, we propose a new polynomial-time algorithm for supervised learning of the parameters of a first order HMM from a state probability distribution (SD) oracle. The SD oracle provides the learner with the state distribution vector corresponding to a query string. We prove the correctness …

The Establishment, Expansion And Ecosystem Effects Of Phragmites Australis, An Invasive Species In Coastal Louisiana, Lee Ellis Stanton Jan 2005

The Establishment, Expansion And Ecosystem Effects Of Phragmites Australis, An Invasive Species In Coastal Louisiana, Lee Ellis Stanton

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

As biological invasions have become a common phenomenon throughout the world, ecologists have intensified efforts to understand why natural communities are susceptible to invasion. Invading species can cause shifts in community structure that result in irreversible changes to ecosystem function. Phragmites australis has rapidly spread in North American coastal wetlands during the past 50 years and has become a dominant feature in Northern Gulf of Mexico brackish marshes. The rate at which Phragmites is spreading or the mechanisms controlling its establishment in these marshes is unknown. My research objectives were to: (1) determine the spatial and temporal patterns of Phragmites …

Laguerre Functions Associated To Euclidean Jordan Algebras, Michael Aristidou Jan 2005

Laguerre Functions Associated To Euclidean Jordan Algebras, Michael Aristidou

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Certain differential recursion relations for the Laguerre functions, defined on a symmetric cone Ω, can be derived from the representations of a specific Lie algebra on L2(Ω,dμv). This Lie algebra is the corresponding Lie algebra of the Lie group G that acts on the tube domain T(Ω)=Ω+iV, where V is the associated Euclidean Jordan algebra of Ω. The representations involved are the highest weight representations of G on L2(Ω,dμv). To obtain these representations, we start from the highest weight representations of G on Hv(T(Ω)), the Hilbert space of holomorphic functions …

Efficient Automatic Correction And Segmentation Based 3d Visualization Of Magnetic Resonance Images, Mikhail V. Milchenko Jan 2005

Efficient Automatic Correction And Segmentation Based 3d Visualization Of Magnetic Resonance Images, Mikhail V. Milchenko

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the recent years, the demand for automated processing techniques for digital medical image volumes has increased substantially. Existing algorithms, however, still often require manual interaction, and newly developed automated techniques are often intended for a narrow segment of processing needs. The goal of this research was to develop algorithms suitable for fast and effective correction and advanced visualization of digital MR image volumes with minimal human operator interaction. This research has resulted in a number of techniques for automated processing of MR image volumes, including a novel MR inhomogeneity correction algorithm derivative surface fitting (dsf), automatic tissue detection algorithm …

Parallel Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Pressure-Induced Structural Transformations In Cadmium Selenide Nanocrystals, Nicholas Jabari Ouma Lee Jan 2005

Parallel Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Pressure-Induced Structural Transformations In Cadmium Selenide Nanocrystals, Nicholas Jabari Ouma Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Parallel molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to investigate pressure-induced solid-to-solid structural phase transformations in cadmium selenide (CdSe) nanorods. The effects of the size and shape of nanorods on different aspects of structural phase transformations are studied. Simulations are based on interatomic potentials validated extensively by experiments. Simulations range from 105 to 106 atoms. These simulations are enabled by highly scalable algorithms executed on massively parallel Beowulf computing architectures. Pressure-induced structural transformations are studied using a hydrostatic pressure medium simulated by atoms interacting via Lennard-Jones potential. Four single-crystal CdSe nanorods, each 44Å in diameter but varying in length, in the …

Stm And Arpes Studies Of Epitaxial Multilayer Ag On Cu(110) And Ni(110), Weichang Zhao Jan 2005

Stm And Arpes Studies Of Epitaxial Multilayer Ag On Cu(110) And Ni(110), Weichang Zhao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Ag nanostructures of multilayer coverages (< 30 monolayers) epitaxially self-assembled on Cu(110) and Ni(110) have been explored by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), angle-resolved photoelectron emission spectroscopy (ARPES), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). We have studied varied nanostructure morphologies self-assembled depending on different deposition/annealing processes and coverages, their atomic structures, growth behaviors and mechanisms, and the electronic structures of nanowires. At nominal coverages of 1.2 ML < ¦È < ~10 ML, there are two epitaxial structures on Cu(110) and Ni(110). One is a Ag(110) multilayer film, which has a superstructure with lateral periodic units of eight and three/four substrate lattice constants along [¯110] and along [001] respectively. Another is that of Ag(110) nanowires surrounded by pseudohexagonal Ag(111) monolayer. The Ag(110) nanowires are triangular in cross section. The two side surfaces are faceted and the long axis is atomically straight along [¯110]. Typical lengths are within the range of 100 ~ 5000 Å, widths 70 ~ 300 Å, side slopes 10 ~ 30º, and heights 5 ~ 60 Å. The Ag nanowires present extraordinary anisotropy with observed aspect ratios (length:width) of up to 20:1. The Ag(110) nanowires are in-registry with the substrate along [001], but not along [¯110]. At coverages of ~ 10 ML < ¦È < ~25 ML, there also exist two different nanostructures, the nanowires and a Ag(110) atomically-flat film with some pits as deep as down to the substrate and a one-dimensional quasiperiodic superstructure along [001]. There are two basic separations of the superstructural stripes: one is three lattices wide (~11 Å) and the other is two lattices wide (~7 Å). Both of nanostructures are stable at temperature up to at least 200 ¡ãC and not inter-transformable. The growth of the nanowires is driven by the elastic strain mechanism, but the growth of the atomically-flat film is driven by electronic growth mechanism originated from the electron quantum confinement in the vertical direction of the film. The ARPES of the nanowires shows dispersion in the vertical and the [¯110] directions, but no dispersion in the [001] direction because of the limited width (~ 200 Å).

Belowground Productivity Of Mangrove Forests In Southwest Florida, Beatriz Eugenia Giraldo Sánchez Jan 2005

Belowground Productivity Of Mangrove Forests In Southwest Florida, Beatriz Eugenia Giraldo Sánchez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Studies in belowground dynamics are limited mainly due to the difficulty of studying roots despite wide recognition of its importance. This dissertation focused on methods for analyzing mangrove roots, root responses to phosphorus and flooding, and variation in root production between forest types. Techniques to separate live and dead roots such as colorimetric, fluorescence, buoyancy, and visual assessment were compared. The traditional method of visual assessment combined with root buoyancy was accurate, fast, and applicable to larger samples. Additionally, techniques such as rhizotrons, root ingrowth cores, and root image analysis were useful to study mangrove roots. Root and litter production, …

Nutrient Interactions, Plant Productivity, Soil Accretion, And Policy Implications Of Wetland Enhancements In Coastal Louisiana, Christopher Brantley Jan 2005

Nutrient Interactions, Plant Productivity, Soil Accretion, And Policy Implications Of Wetland Enhancements In Coastal Louisiana, Christopher Brantley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Ecosystem response, stakeholder interactions, and the policy implications to a wetland assimilation project are reported here for the City of Mandeville, St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. Between September 1998 and October 2004, input of secondarily treated wastewater effluent was found to have a net positive effect on the downstream wetland receiving basin. The major hydrologic inputs to the system are the effluent, precipitation, and back water flooding from Lake Pontchartrain. Nutrient levels were generally low except in the immediate vicinity of the outfall and removal efficiencies of N and P ranged from 44% to 87% and 25% to 93%, respectively. On …

Boundary Effects On Non-Equilibrium Localized Structures In Spatially Extended Systems, Aniruddha Yadav Jan 2005

Boundary Effects On Non-Equilibrium Localized Structures In Spatially Extended Systems, Aniruddha Yadav

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A study of the effects of system boundaries on bistable front propagation in nonequilibrium reaction-diffusion systems is presented. Two model partial differential equations displaying bistable fronts, with distinct experimental motivations and mathematical structure, are examined in detail utilizing simulations and perturbation techniques. We see that propagating fronts in both models bounce, trap, pin, or oscillate at the boundary, contingent on the imposed boundary condition, initial front speed and distance from the boundary. The similarities in front boundary interactions in these two models is traced to the fact that they display the same front instability (Ising-Bloch bifurcation) that controls the speed …

Error Estimates For Stabilized Approximation Methods For Semigroups, Sarah Campbell Mcallister Jan 2005

Error Estimates For Stabilized Approximation Methods For Semigroups, Sarah Campbell Mcallister

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this work we analyze error estimates for rational approximation methods, and their stabilizations, for strongly continuous semigroups. Chapter 1 consists of a brief survey of time discretization methods for semigroups. In Chapter 2, we demonstrate a new method for obtaining convergent approximations in the absence of stability for strongly continuous semigroups with arbitrary initial data. In Section 2.2, we state the stabilization result in more general form and show that this method can be used to improve known error estimates by a magnitude of up to one half for smooth initial data. In Section 2.3, we give concrete examples …

Carbonate Records Of Submarine Hydrocarbon Venting: Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Matthew S. Hackworth Jan 2005

Carbonate Records Of Submarine Hydrocarbon Venting: Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Matthew S. Hackworth

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Hydrocarbon seep sediments are examined from 3 sites in the Gulf of Mexico (Green Canyon Lease Blocks 232, 185, and 272) to relate the effects of gas hydrates and hydrocarbons on microbial process, pore fluid chemistry, and the processes of authigenic carbonate formation. Hydrocarbon-fueled microbial reactions result in pore fluids with lowered SO42- (all consumed by –10 cm) and enrichments in H2S, alkalinity, and DIC (up to 20 mmol, 30 meq/L, and 18 mmol/L, respectively) which promote carbonate formation. Pore fluid d13CDIC (PDB) is influenced by thermogenic hydrocarbons and crude oil in GC …

Restoration Success Of Backfilling Canals In Coastal Louisiana Marshes, Joseph Baustian Jan 2005

Restoration Success Of Backfilling Canals In Coastal Louisiana Marshes, Joseph Baustian

LSU Master's Theses

The need for effective marsh restoration techniques in Louisiana is a pressing issue as the state continues to lose coastal wetlands. Returning spoil banks to canals, known as "backfilling", is an attractive restoration option because it restores marsh, prevents future wetland loss, and is cost effective. The direct conversion of marsh to canals and spoil banks accounted for over 22% of Louisiana's wetland loss from 1930 to 1990, and the indirect losses associated with canal dredging are even larger. The restoration success of 30 canals, backfilled twenty years ago, was examined in this study and compared to restoration success shortly …

Wavelet Sets With And Without Groups And Multiresolution Analysis, Mihaela Dobrescu Jan 2005

Wavelet Sets With And Without Groups And Multiresolution Analysis, Mihaela Dobrescu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation we study a special kind of wavelets, the so-called minimally supported frequency wavelets and the associated wavelet sets. Most of the examples of wavelet sets are for dilation sets which are groups. In this work we construct wavelet sets for which the dilation set, D, is of the form D=MN, where the product is direct, and so D is not necessarily group. In the second part of this dissertation we construct multiwavelets associated with MRA's and we generalize the rotations in the dilation sets to Coxeter groups.

Medical Image Enhancement, Alina Monica Trifas Jan 2005

Medical Image Enhancement, Alina Monica Trifas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Each image acquired from a medical imaging system is often part of a two-dimensional (2-D) image set whose total presents a three-dimensional (3-D) object for diagnosis. Unfortunately, sometimes these images are of poor quality. These distortions cause an inadequate object-of-interest presentation, which can result in inaccurate image analysis. Blurring is considered a serious problem. Therefore, “deblurring” an image to obtain better quality is an important issue in medical image processing. In our research, the image is initially decomposed. Contrast improvement is achieved by modifying the coefficients obtained from the decomposed image. Small coefficient values represent subtle details and are amplified …

Enantioselective Syntheses And Chemical Investigations Of Plant-Derived Bioactive Volatile Compounds, Anne Marie Sauer Jan 2005

Enantioselective Syntheses And Chemical Investigations Of Plant-Derived Bioactive Volatile Compounds, Anne Marie Sauer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Research, inspired by nature, provides ample opportunity for discovery, ingenuity, and creative endeavor. For these reasons, the work and accomplishments presented herein focus on the total syntheses and related investigations of a variety of natural product derivatives, specifically (+)-nootkatone and jasmone. While the former consists of several independent projects: (a) an enantioselective synthetic route to (+)-nootkatone and derivatives, (b) examination of the valencane ring system, (c) determination of the absolute configuration of (+)-nootkatone, and (d) rearrangements of various sesquiterpenoid derivatives; the latter focuses on the construction ofƒndelta, epsilon-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, hetero Pauson-Khand substrates, via [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangements.

Radiative Transfer Modeling Of Thermal Infrared Emissivity Spectra: Applications To Martian Regolith Observations, Karly Mariah Pitman Jan 2005

Radiative Transfer Modeling Of Thermal Infrared Emissivity Spectra: Applications To Martian Regolith Observations, Karly Mariah Pitman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Satellite and rover remote sensing of planetary regolith surfaces, in the form of thermal infrared emissivity spectra taken at nadir and off-nadir angles of emergence from the surface, requires use of theoretical models for interpretation of constituent grain physical properties. However, such models have remained in stasis in recent years, with nearly a ten-year gap in significant advances. To date, no radiative transfer model (semiempirical, exact, or hybrid solution) has been able to adequately predict the nadir emissivity behavior of simple mineral assemblages. Few measurements have been attempted in the laboratory or field regarding directional emissivity effects of planetary regoliths; …

Virtual Strings For Closed Curves With Multiple Components And Filamentations For Virtual Links, William Schellhorn Jan 2005

Virtual Strings For Closed Curves With Multiple Components And Filamentations For Virtual Links, William Schellhorn

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The theory of filaments on oriented chord diagrams can be used to detect some non-classical virtual knots. We extend existing filament techniques to virtual links with more than one component and give examples of virtual links that these techniques can detect as non-classical. Given a signed Gauss word underlying an oriented chord diagram, we describe how to construct a finite sequence of integers that encodes all of the filament information for the diagram. We also introduce a square array of integers called a MIN-square that summarizes the filament information about all of the signed Gauss words having a given Gauss …

Effect Of Estradiol-17b On The Gonadal Developemnt Of Diploid And Triploid Female Eastern Oysters, Roberto Quintana Jan 2005

Effect Of Estradiol-17b On The Gonadal Developemnt Of Diploid And Triploid Female Eastern Oysters, Roberto Quintana

LSU Master's Theses

Declines in annual oyster landings and problems associated with seasonal reduction of oyster meat yields have increased interest for development of techniques to produce oysters with enhanced growth characteristics. Research interest has been focused on developing improved lines by induction of polyploidy. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the enhancement of gonadal development of triploid oysters, by the use of the hormone estradiol 17-â (E2) to produce viable eggs for the development of tetraploid broodstocks. Previous studies with the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, have shown: (1) the need to use the larger eggs of triploid females to …

Winter Bird Use Of The Chinese Tallow Tree In Louisiana, Michael John Baldwin Jan 2005

Winter Bird Use Of The Chinese Tallow Tree In Louisiana, Michael John Baldwin

LSU Master's Theses

Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera) is a non-native invasive tree that is of particular concern in the Southeastern United States. It has become naturalized in a variety of habitats and can be found in monospecific stands. The use of tallow woodlands by overwintering birds is poorly documented. I compared use of tallow woodlands to use of bottomland hardwood forests by birds in the Mermentau River Basin, Louisiana. Species richness and evenness were greater in the bottomland hardwood sites. Three species were more abundant in tallow woodlands, six species were more common in bottomland hardwoods, and six species exhibited no difference between …

Coastal Wetland Subsidence Arising From Local Hydrologic Manipulations, R. Eugene Turner Apr 2004

Coastal Wetland Subsidence Arising From Local Hydrologic Manipulations, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Twenty-three estimates of soil subsidence rates arising under the influence of local hydrologic changes from flap-gates, weirs, dikes, and culverts in tidal wetlands were compared to 75 examples of subsidence in drained agricultural wetlands. The induced subsidence rates from these hydrologic modifications in tidal wetlands can continue for more than 100 years, and range between 1.67 to 0.10 cm yr−1 within 1 to 155 years after the hydrologic modifications commence. These subsidence rates are lower than in freshwater wetlands drained for agricultural purposes, decline with age, and are significant in comparison to the rates of global sea level rise or …

Inorganic Nitrogen Transformations At High Loading Rates In An Oligohaline Estuary, R. Eugene Turner, Q. Dortch, Nancy N. Rabalais Jan 2004

Inorganic Nitrogen Transformations At High Loading Rates In An Oligohaline Estuary, R. Eugene Turner, Q. Dortch, Nancy N. Rabalais

Faculty Publications

A well-defined nitrogen retention and turnover budget was estimated for a shallow oligohaline lake (Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, USA). In 1997 a month-long diversion of the Mississippi River filled the Lake with highly concentrated river water (80 µM nitrate) and lowered the salinity to 0 psu within 2 weeks. After the spillway was closed the Lake mixed with estuarine tidal waters and came to equilibrium over 4 months with the riverine, atmospheric and offshore water nitrogen sources. A flushing rate of 1.78% d−1 was estimated by analyzing a plot of ln salinity versus time for the first 120 days after the …

Suspended Sediment, C, N, P, And Si Yields From The Mississippi River Basin, R. Eugene Turner, Nancy N. Rabalais Jan 2004

Suspended Sediment, C, N, P, And Si Yields From The Mississippi River Basin, R. Eugene Turner, Nancy N. Rabalais

Faculty Publications

The annual loads of C,N,P, silicate, total suspended sediment (mass) and their yields (mass area−1) were estimated for six watersheds of the Mississippi River Basin (MRB) using water quality and water discharge records for 1973 to 1994. The highest load of suspended sediments is from the Missouri watershed (58 mt km2 yr−1), which is also the largest among the six major sub-basins. The Ohio watershed delivers the largest load of water (38%). The Upper Mississippi has the largest total nitrogen load (32%) and yield (1120 kg TN km2 yr−1). The loading of organic carbon, total phosphorus and silicate from the …

Below-Ground Biomass In Healthy And Impaired Salt Marshes, R. Eugene Turner, Erick M. Swenson, Charles S. Milan, James M. Lee, Thomas A. Oswald Jan 2004

Below-Ground Biomass In Healthy And Impaired Salt Marshes, R. Eugene Turner, Erick M. Swenson, Charles S. Milan, James M. Lee, Thomas A. Oswald

Faculty Publications

Twelve salt marshes in south Louisiana (USA) were classified as either ‘impaired’ or ‘healthy’ before a summer sample collection of above- and below-ground biomass and determination of sediment accretion rates. The above-ground biomass of plant tissues was the same at both impaired and healthy salt marshes and was not a good predictor of marsh health. However, below-ground root biomass in the upper 30 cm was much lower in the impaired marshes compared to the healthy marshes. Compromises to root production apparently occur before there is an obvious consequence to the above-ground biomass, which may quickly collapse before remedial action can …

An Evaluation Of Reference Evapotranspiration Models In Louisiana, Royce Landon Fontenot Jan 2004

An Evaluation Of Reference Evapotranspiration Models In Louisiana, Royce Landon Fontenot

LSU Master's Theses

Daily and monthly output from seven evapotranspiration models (FAO-24 Radiation, FAO-24 Blaney-Criddle, Hargreaves-Samani, Priestly-Taylor, Makkink, and Turc) have been tested against reference evapotranspiration data computed by the FAO-56 Penman-Monteith model to assess the accuracy of each model in estimating grass-reference evapotranspiration in Louisiana. Models were compared at eight stations of the Louisiana Agriclimate Information System using data from December 2002 to November 2003. Comparisons were also made using three composite regions: statewide, inland, and coastal. A pan evaporation to reference evapotranspiration model (FAO-24 Pan Evaporation) was also tested against daily grass reference evapotranspiration from the FAO-56 Penman-Monteith model using data …

Evaluation Of A Desktop Computed Radiography System For Imrt Dosimetry, Ines-Ana Jurkovic Jan 2004

Evaluation Of A Desktop Computed Radiography System For Imrt Dosimetry, Ines-Ana Jurkovic

LSU Master's Theses

Different techniques have been developed and used to evaluate dose distribution calculation accuracy and dose delivery reproducibility as a part of patient-specific IMRT QA – e.q. film dosimetry, ionization chambers, and diode arrays. To verify that the calculated dose distribution is delivered accurately during treatment, film dosimetry is usually used. The accuracy and reproducibility of film optical density as an indicator of dose is influenced by several variables, including the chemical processing and scanning conditions. This study investigates the possibility to use a desktop computed radiography (CR) system for patient-specific intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) quality assurance (QA). A study …

Comparative Analysis Between Different Flood Assessment Technologies In Hazus-Mh, Jennifer Carol Meyer Jan 2004

Comparative Analysis Between Different Flood Assessment Technologies In Hazus-Mh, Jennifer Carol Meyer

LSU Master's Theses

Natural disasters devastate the United States through both economic loss and loss of life. The world wide economic damage that results from natural disasters has more than tripled in the last thirty years. Of these natural disasters, floods are the most chronic and costly disasters, comprising an average $5 billion dollars of damage each year. FEMA has released a new software program called HAZUS-MH, which attempts to capture economic losses caused by flooding before losses occur and predict losses from real-time events. This estimate is accomplished through the coupling of flood hazard modeling with local data. FEMA’s goal is that …

Study On The Termiticidal Components Of Juniperus Virginiana, Chamaecyparis Nootkatensis And Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana, Yaojian Liu

LSU Master's Theses

Termites cause serious damage to wood and wood products. In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to extractives from naturally decay resistant trees. In this study, we compared the termiticidal and antifungal effects of extractives from Alaska yellow cedar (AYC), Port-Orford cedar (POC), and Eastern red cedar (ERC). Pentane and Hexane-Acetone extractives from YC and POC, and pentane extractives from ERC were most favorable in terms of termite protection among the extractives we got. Weight loss of strips treated with 5000 ppm pentane extractives from Eastern red cedar, was significantly lower than those treated with solutions of pentane extractive …

Complexity And Nekton Use Of Marsh Edge Habitats In Barataria Bay, Louisiana, Timothy W. Birdsong

LSU Master's Theses

This study examined the effects of intrahabitat variability on marsh edge use by fishes and decapod crustaceans. The objectives were to (1) identify quantitative measures of habitat complexity that describe the structural design of marsh edge habitats, and (2) examine differences in nekton use between cut-bank and gently sloping marsh edge habitats. The study was conducted in Barataria Bay, Louisiana at 75, 10-m marsh edge study sites. Monthly seining was conducted in fall 2003 and spring 2004 and measures of habitat complexity were recorded at each sample location. Indices of tidal inundation and site exposure to wind and wave action …
