Sediment Buffering And Recycling On An Annual To Centennial Scale Along The Mississippi River, Nikki E. Neubeck Apr 2022

Sediment Buffering And Recycling On An Annual To Centennial Scale Along The Mississippi River, Nikki E. Neubeck

LSU Master's Theses

Although the Mississippi River and its tributaries have been investigated for many years, the alteration of the river through dams, levees, and diversions has affected how sediment is transported from source to sink (>103 y). Previous provenance research using detrital zircon U-Pb dating indicates a slow transport time from source-to-sink, but recent anthropogenic alterations of the river may potentially diminish the transportation time of heavy minerals due to an increase in flow efficiency. The objective of this study is to analyze the degree of buffering and recycling of Mississippi River sediment over a range of short time scales, …

The Modern Mississippi: Provenance Indicators And Human Impact, Brittney Anne Gregory Mar 2019

The Modern Mississippi: Provenance Indicators And Human Impact, Brittney Anne Gregory

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Given the significant degree to which the modern Mississippi River and its tributaries have been altered through dams, levees, and diversions, it is important to understand how sediment is transported from source to sink. The objective of this dissertation is to explore how the modern Mississippi River transports sediment from its tributaries to its delta using three independent proxies. Provenance indicators have traditionally been an effective way with which to characterize sediment transport in large river systems. First, detrital U-Pb zircon dating is used to investigate modern flux and possible anthropogenic influences on coarse-grained sediment within the modern Mississippi River. …

A Regional Survey Of River-Plume Sedimentation On The Mississippi River Delta Front, Andrew J. Courtois Oct 2018

A Regional Survey Of River-Plume Sedimentation On The Mississippi River Delta Front, Andrew J. Courtois

LSU Master's Theses

Many studies of the Mississippi River Delta (MRD) have shown historic declines in sediment load over the last few decades. Recent studies also reported that ~50% of the suspended load during floods is sequestered within the delta. While the impact of declining sediment load on wetland loss is relatively well documented, submarine sedimentary processes on the delta front during this recent period of are understudied. To better understand modern sediment dispersal and deposition across the Mississippi River Delta Front, 31 multicores were collected in June 2017 from locations extending offshore from the main river outlets in water depths of 25-280 …

Modelling And Observational Evidence For The Igneous Evolution Of The Elysium Volcanic Province On Mars, David Andrew Susko Jan 2017

Modelling And Observational Evidence For The Igneous Evolution Of The Elysium Volcanic Province On Mars, David Andrew Susko

LSU Master's Theses

A major knowledge gap exists on how eruptive compositions of a single martian volcanic province change over time. The Elysium Volcanic Province is a location of great geologic interest on Mars. Its predominantly Amazonian surface age (beginning 3.3 Ga), and its isolation in the northern hemisphere of Mars away from other volcano-tectonic regions, make it an ideal locale to investigate igneous compositions erupted during the most recent geologic period on Mars. Here, this work seeks to fill that gap by assessing the compositional evolution of Elysium as a major martian volcanic province in two related projects. The first project seeks …

Archean Geodynamic Conditions Using P-T Constraints Of The East Pilbara Craton Ttgs, Andrew Kody Webb Jan 2016

Archean Geodynamic Conditions Using P-T Constraints Of The East Pilbara Craton Ttgs, Andrew Kody Webb

LSU Master's Theses

We know very little about the tectonic setting present during the Hadean, but based on studies of surviving Hadean zircons, we know that a Hadean protocrust must have been established by at least 4.4 Ga (Kemp et al. 2010), and it must have also been able to accommodate minimum melt conditions (Harrison 2005). Tectonic models for Earth during the Hadean and Archean follow two trends: uniformitarianism and non-uniformitarianism. Uniformitarian models (following the famed geological concept that the present is the key to the past) argue that Hadean zircons and Archean rocks formed via processes akin to modern-style oceanic crust production …

Mapping Of The Oil Window In The Eagle Ford Shale Play Of Southwest Texas Using Thermal Modeling And Log Overlay Analysis, Austin Pourciau Cardneaux Jan 2012

Mapping Of The Oil Window In The Eagle Ford Shale Play Of Southwest Texas Using Thermal Modeling And Log Overlay Analysis, Austin Pourciau Cardneaux

LSU Master's Theses

The Eagle Ford formation in South Texas has been an established hydrocarbon play since 2008. The Eagle Ford is considered an unconventional resource because it is a source, reservoir, and seal. Hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling have enabled this play. As drilling and production continue the limits of this play are being defined. The area between dry gas and wet gas/condensate has been known for some time since the initial production started in dry gas and moved up-dip. After the oil window was discovered, the contact between wet gas/condensate started to become more defined. Now companies are beginning to delineate …

U-Pb Geochronology Of Detrital Zircon In Quartzites Of The Sawtooth Metamorphic Complex, Sawtooth Range, Idaho, Usa, Philip Gerard Bergeron Jan 2012

U-Pb Geochronology Of Detrital Zircon In Quartzites Of The Sawtooth Metamorphic Complex, Sawtooth Range, Idaho, Usa, Philip Gerard Bergeron

LSU Master's Theses

In southwest Laurentia, the Paleoproterozoic Selway terrane has been proposed to extend as basement from the Wyoming Province to the Proterozoic rifted margin of Laurentia primarily based on limited exposures. The Sawtooth Metamorphic Complex (SMC), Idaho, a series of high-grade metasupracrustal rocks lies within the proposed region of the Selway terrane and may represent remnants of this terrane. Alternatively, it may represent another basement terrane of cratonic North America. To test the hypothesis that the SMC belongs to the Selway terrane, detrital zircon U/Pb ages of five quartzite samples were analyzed by LA-ICP-MS to establish age, possible provenance, and age …

Antarctic Plant And Phytoplankton Response To The First Phase Of The Mid Miocene Climatic Optimum At South Mcmurdo Sound, Lee Foersterling Jan 2011

Antarctic Plant And Phytoplankton Response To The First Phase Of The Mid Miocene Climatic Optimum At South Mcmurdo Sound, Lee Foersterling

LSU Master's Theses

The Antarctic Drilling Program (ANDRILL) recovered 1138.54 m of sub-seafloor marine sediments with 98% core recovery at the AND2-2A drill site in South McMurdo Sound. Biostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, and isotopic dating (Acton et al., 2008) indicated that an Early to Middle Miocene section (223-1138.54 mbsf) was recovered. This study focuses on an interval with high concentrations of palynomorphs, located between 460.57 and 403.48 mbsf and dated to 16.7 Ma to 16.2 Ma according to the updated Acton et al. (2008) ANDRILL SMS age model. Palynological results show a pronounced increase in organic microfossils between 434.01 and 431.91 mbsf, compared to levels …

The Anatomy Of A Coastal Bay/Lake System, Michelle Greene Jan 2007

The Anatomy Of A Coastal Bay/Lake System, Michelle Greene

LSU Master's Theses

A comprehensive and integrated approach involving sedimentology, shallow surface geophysics and radio-chemistry was used to understand lakebed sediment dynamics in Little Lake. This methodology attempted to (1) define the morphology and origin of the lake, (2) understand the variability in lake-bottom sediments, (3) assess short-term and long-term sediment accumulation rates, and (4) image lakebed features. Subbottom chirp, single beam echo sounder, and side scan sonar data were collected to define hydrographic depths, lateral variability in seabed sediment type, lakebed features, and shallow subsurface structure. Sediment samples were taken at representative locations throughout the lake and particle size distributions were determined. …

Outcrop To Subsurface Stratigraphy Of The Pennsylvanian Hermosa Group Southern Paradox Basin U.S.A., Alan Lee Brown Jan 2002

Outcrop To Subsurface Stratigraphy Of The Pennsylvanian Hermosa Group Southern Paradox Basin U.S.A., Alan Lee Brown

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) sedimentary rocks within the Paradox Basin Four Corners area of the western United States afford a unique opportunity to study the development of sedimentary successions in a complex marine to nonmarine depositional setting. The close association of thick intervals of nonmarine fan-delta facies adjacent to and in time equivalent position to marine carbonate-evaporite facies suggests complex relationships between the factors affecting deposition. Development of an effective scheme to differentiate the depositional signatures from within these sedimentary successions is the primary goal of this study. To achieve this goal, two objectives were pursued. The first was to calibrate the …

Stratigraphy, Sedimentary Petrology, And Depositional Environments Of Tillite In The Upper Precambrian Mount Rogers Formation, Virginia, Richard L. Rexroad Feb 1978

Stratigraphy, Sedimentary Petrology, And Depositional Environments Of Tillite In The Upper Precambrian Mount Rogers Formation, Virginia, Richard L. Rexroad

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The upper member of the upper Precambrian Mount Rogers Formation of southwestern Virginia includes thick units of massive conglomeratic mudstone Interpreted as tillite (Rankin, 1970; Blondeau and Lowe, 1972; Blondeau, 1975; Schwab, 1976). The tillite is composed of unsorted angular plutonic, metamorphic, volcanic, and sedimentary rock fragments enclosed within a matrix of sandy hematitic mudstone. The tillite is interbedded with arkosic sandstone, argillite, and conglomerate. Sedimentary structures and textures of these units suggest deposition by glaciers which protruded from land into a standing body of water as floating ice. Glacial drift was deposited in a large body of water, probably …
