I was born in 1917. My parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants who came to New York City at about the turn of the century.
At sixteen I enrolled in Brooklyn College, a recently organized, tuition-free, municipal college, then housed in rented office buildings in downtown Brooklyn. It took an hour to get to or from school on the subway. I managed to choose this inconvenient location because this school seemed most likely …

A magnetic monopole may be detected by its deflection in an electric field or by the character of the ionization it produces. The electric deflection experiment may be performed in a helium bubble chamber where helical (or spiral) tracks whose axes are parallel to the D-lines would be certain evidence for the discovery of the monopole. Previous studies of the ionization have emphasized that the Bragg tail would be missing from a monopole track, as compared to a charged particle. This conclusion must be modified because of the thin-down of tracks of heavy nuclei. The tracks of heavy nuclei …

This undergraduate thesis is based on an experiment which is currently being carried out by Mr. Frank Karioris, Assistant Professor of Physics at Marquette University. The object of the experiment is to get a reliable value for the ratio of specific heats of air by the method of Clement and Desormes. I have assisted Mr. Karioris in the construction and testing of the apparatus. I have also taken data and made the necessary calculations. The design of the apparatus and the modifications of the theory have been worked out by Mr. Karioris.

A hardness tester, especially adapted for grain, was constructed by modifying a commercial portable soft metal tester known as the Barcol Impressor. A preloaded stylus is forced into grain sections prepared by means of a microtome. The displacement of the stylus, measured by a dial micrometer, is used as a hardness index. This has been related to the Vickers diamond pyramid hardness which is a standard metallurgical test. A number of hardness measurements may be made on a single transverse kernel section. The tester may be used for all wheat varieties. Significant variations in hardness within a single wheat kernel …

A Study Of The Radioactive Decay Of The Two Isomers Of Pd109 And Of The Associated Low-Lying Levels Of Ag109, John W. Starner

The radiations of Pd109 (13.45 ± 0.01 hr) and Pd109m(4.69 ± 0.01 min) have been investigated with a coincidence scintillation spectrometer and a solenoidal beta-ray spectrometer. Pd109m was observed to have only one mode of decay: a 188-kev (E3) isomeric transition to Pd109. The principal beta-ray group (>99.9%) of Pd109 was found to have an end-point energy of 1.025 ± 0.005 Mev. Gamma rays of the following energies (kev) and approximate intensities (photons/105 disintegrations) were observed to acccmpany the decay of Pd109: 773 (4), 707 (2), 643 (10), 602 …

The first of these has immediate application to analysis of air shower data which is presently being gathered by two large scintillation tanks located immediately behind the University of New Mexico physics building. The data with which the other two topics are concerned cannot be gathered with present equipment, but these preliminary calculations have been performed in anticipation of the installation of the appropriate apparatus.

The problem with which this investigation is concerned was to construct suitable apparatus to measure accurately the shape and the duration of a pulse of δ-radiation of approximately 10 Mev energy and 20 mμ sec duration. In particular, the shape of the tail of the pulse had to be determined as accurately as possible, so that millimicrosecond half lives can be measured accurately with the betatron.

"A theoretical expression for a cell-center distribution function was developed using a fundamental statistical mechanics approach. A free volume picture of the liquid was used with each atom located in a spherical cell formed by its nearest neighbors. Cell-center density distribution curves were obtained for liquid argon for temperatures of 84.4°K, 91.8°K, 126.7°K, 144.1°K, and 149.3°K and for argon gas at 149.3°K, and a comparison made with the experimental atomic distribution curves obtained by Eisenstein. For the first two temperatures a sharper, more definite structure was predicted by the cell model. For the remaining four temperatures, with the assumptions made, …

As shown in Figure 1 the region is bounded by the planes x= -a and x=b. The plane x=0 divides the region into two parts, Region I and Region II. 1. Regardless of the energies of ionization of a carbon atom, CH2 may be considered as a system composed of two protons, a carbon kernel, and four electrons. From our everyday experience, we have become familiar with the fact that matter occurs in three different forms-solid, liquid, and gas. Under ordinary conditions stone, iron, copper, and chalk, for example, are solids; water, oil, and mercury are liquids; air, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide are gases. Each one of these forms is called a phase.
