LACK of good quality water in many parts of Western Australia often forces people to use salty water for irrigation and gardening.

This article gives some hints on how to reduce salt damage to plants when salty water must be used for irrigation or gardening.

It includes a table of plants which may be irrigated with water of varying degrees of salinity and lists precautions which should be taken for each group.

New Varieties Could Extend The Peach Canning Season, S R J Newton

THE peach canning industry in Western Australia at present has only a limited period of operation, coinciding with the harvest time of the major variety, Golden Queen.

New canning peach varieties tested at Stoneville Research Station could be used to extend the harvest period of canning peaches beyond that of the present standard variety, Golden Queen.

This would have obvious advantages for growers and a canning industry.

The South African variety Keimoes was the most promising canning peach tested. Tests on other varieties are continuing.

Some Ecological Effects Of The Oil Industry On Farmland In East Central Illinois, Dale E. Fruendt

Between June, 1970 and July, 1971 a two square mile area in East Central Illinois served as a study area for the effects of the oil industry on farm land. Observations were made on several farms concerning the activity of oil companies and interviews with farmers were held. Two areas of farmland were given special attention. One was a clover field where salt water had flooded a portion of the field. The other area was a corn field where oil had flooded approximately eight acres of land. Progressive increases in concentration of dissolved solids in the Colorado River water from Lake Powell to Imperial Dam seem to alter plankton dynamics and biological productivity of the river. Also, changes in biological productivity and micronutrients concentrations occur within the same reservoir. Development of a digital simulation model to predict micronutrients concentrations and biological productivity is necessary for diagnosing changes in plankton population and effluent-carrying capacity of the system. This study developed from observations made during an earlier study on Lake Mead which was reported in CHE-70, Water Quality Study of Lake Mead. Results from that study indicated that poor-quality water was flowing into the Las Vegas Bay reach of Boulder Basin, Lake Mead. Also reports of deteriorating water quality, resulting in taste and odors in domestic water supplies taken from Boulder Basin as well as a reduction in the attractiveness of Las Vegas Bay for recreational uses caused by aquatic plants and algae blooms, indicated a need for a concentrated study concerning the effects of flows from Las …

The solid–liquid phase diagrams were investigated to 60 kbar for elemental sodium, potassium, and various sodium–potassium alloys. The data for Na and K are in general agreement with those of earlier workers. In the alloy system the temperatures of both the peritectic and eutectic halts increase as the pressure increases, but with different slopes, so that the two invariant points merge at approximately 35 kbar. Above this pressure, two halts are again observed. One increases with increasing pressure, and the other decreases with increasing pressure up to 55 kbar, where it abruptly starts increasing again. This study evaluates the extent of lakeshore development and recreational use of Lake Bemidji in north central Minnesota and examines the willingness of lakeshore residents to be assessed for corrective measures to halt deterioration of this valuable recreational lake. Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

A new species of Ischyrosmilus (I. crusafonti) is reported from the Early Pleistocene Broadwater Local Fauna of Morrill County, Nebraska. Ischyrosmilus sp. is reported from the Early Pleistocene Lisco Local Fauna. Megantereon is reported from the Broadwater Local Fauna and this is the first record of the genus from North America.

The specific objectives of this research were to (1) develop a method for determining labor time and labor cost of cooks by work functions in the production of selected vegetarian entrees, and (2) determine the percentage relationship of cooks' labor to food cost in selected classifications of entrees.

Erasure of sediment surface features by individuals of the species, Mellita guinguiesperforata, observed in this study suggests that all members of the sub-order, Scutellina, are able to erase sediment surface features. Sweep time, the time needed to erase the surface features of an area, depends on the population density, individual size, and speed of movement of the sand dollars. As early as sixty years ago, the existence of an enzyme from mammalian tissues which catalyzed the oxidation of xanthine and hypoxanthine was recognized. The name given the enzyme was derived from its earliest recognized action, hence xanthine oxidase. Although little is known about the biological functions of the enzyme, the high affinity shown for xanthine and hypoxanthine may indicate that these are the most significant substrates biologically.

An In Vivo Perfusion Apparatus For Studies On Gingival Disease In The Albino Rat : Assessment By A Perfusion Of The Enzymes Collagenase And Hyaluronidase, James A. Smith

This thesis describes an in vivo perfusion apparatus which can continuously deliver controlled quantities of solutions to localized, contralateral intraoral areas in albino rats. Three animals were per fused on the experimental area (the mesial sulcular area of the maxillary first molar) on one side with tap water and Trypan blue. Localization of the solution delivered and minimal histological changes due to the presence of the apparatus was demonstrated on these animals. Solutions of .5%, 1%, and 2% hyaluronidase and collagenase were perfused on the experimental areas of nine animals. When both enzymes were used, hyaluronidase always preceded collagenase in …
