Evidence For The Existence Of Two Stable Sites For Cobalt Impurity Atoms In Aluminum, Arun Venkatachar Aug 1971

Evidence For The Existence Of Two Stable Sites For Cobalt Impurity Atoms In Aluminum, Arun Venkatachar

Dissertations and Theses

Using Fe57Mössbauer spectroscopy, two alternative sites occupied by cobalt (10-4 at. % ) impurity atoms in aluminum have been isolated. The substitutional site A is the stable position after annealing the sample above 840 K, followed by a rapid quench. The impurity atoms in site A are characterized by a single line Mössbauer spectrum (indicative of a cubic environment), a room-temperature f = 0.502 (r. m. s. displ. 0.071 A) and an I. S. (reI. to Fe) = -0.421 mm/sec. For anneals below 770 K the cobalt atoms migrate to site B, which is characterized by a …

Antimatter, Claudia Morgan Griffin Jan 1970

Antimatter, Claudia Morgan Griffin

Honors Theses

Very little is known about the mysterious world of antimatter. The idea that such particles could exist was not even proposed until forty years ago. Perhaps the story of the discovery of antimatter began when scientists were trying to unify the Theory of Relativity and the Theory of Quanta. The trouble was that the quantities in the classical wave equation are in the second derivatives. In Schrodinger's wave equation of the Quantum Theory, x, y, and z are second derivatives, but i is a first derivative.

Following Einstein's basic ideas, H. Minkowski proposed the concept of a four-dimensional time-space continuum …

Self‐Consistent Electronic Structure Of Disordered Fe0.65ni0.35, Duane D. Johnson, F. J. Pinski, G. M. Stocks Dec 984

Self‐Consistent Electronic Structure Of Disordered Fe0.65ni0.35, Duane D. Johnson, F. J. Pinski, G. M. Stocks

Duane D. Johnson

We present the results of the first a b i n i t i o calculation of the electronic structure of the disordered alloy Fe0.65Ni0.35. The calculation is based on the multiple‐scattering coherent‐potential approach (KKR‐CPA) and is fully self‐consistent and spin polarized. Magnetic effects are included within local‐spin‐density functional theory using the exchange‐correlation function of Vosko–Wilk–Nusair. The most striking feature of the calculation is that electrons of different spins experience different degrees of disorder. The minority spin electrons see a very large disorder, whereas the majority spin electrons see little disorder. Consequently, the minority spin density of states is smooth …
