This review focuses on oestrous detection, which is a vital factor for mating efficiency in pigs. The content includes information concerning the timing of ovulation, in relation to oestrous behavior, follicular growth and hormonal changes before and during oestrus. Also the factors affecting the oestrous interval, the importance of boar contact, oestrus detection in gilts and the diagnosis and treatment of anoestrus and/or ovarian dysfunction in sows.

Although the domestic pig is not a true seasonal breeder, a seasonal effect on reproductive performance exists. A reduction in reproductive performance during some periods of the year is most pronounced in primiparous sows and is manifested in various ways such as, delayed puberty, prolonged weaning-to-first-service interval (WSI), increased number of sows returning to oestrus after mating, decreased conception rate, decreased farrowing rate (FR), decreased litter size and an increased incidence of abortion. Artificial Insemination (AI) in pigs has been well developed especially in the area of instrument design and semen preservation. AI techniques normally practiced as a routine, work well in Thailand swine breeding farms. Current research for the development of AI in pigs at the Department of Obstetrics Gynaecology and Reproduction, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University consists of: fractionated insemination, semen evaluation testing the ability of sperms to penetration oocytes and fertilise and the economic evaluation of AI boars raised in evaporative cooling systems. These researches have been reviewed in this report.

Coronavirus-Like Particles In Porcine Kupffer Cell Culture, Roongroje Thanawongnuwech, Jacqueline K. Kinyamu, Jean A. Olsen

Coronavirus-like particles were observed by transmission electron microscopy in smooth-walled vesicles of Golgi, or endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in a primary Kupffer cell culture. The culture came from a clinically normal 10-day-old pig, from a swine herd that was known to be infected with porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). Budding profiles of virions were observed in the smooth-walled vesicles and later, apparently free viruses accumulated in the collecting vesicles. The aim of these experiments was to investigate the effects of sperm preparation on the success rate of in vitro fertilization in the pig. Three factors, the time period for capacitation, the type of sperm and the sperm motility-stimulating factors were studied by investigating their effect on the cleavage of pig follicular oocytes, after IVM-IVF-IVC. A total of 1,235 immature oocytes, collected from 3 to 6 mm follicles of gilt ovaries gathered at slaughterhouse were allocated to 3 experiments. The objective of this study was to determine the optimum condition for porcine oocyte preparation for in vitro fertilization. A total of 1,130 immature oocytes collected from superficial follicles, 3-6 mm in diameter were allocated to 3 experiments. In Experiment 1, the length of time for oocyte maturation were examined (n=469). Immature oocytes were cultivated in TCM199 NaHCO3 supplemented with 10 μg/ml of FSH/LH and 1 μg/ml of Estradiol-17ẞ for 24, 40 or 48 hrs.
