The patellar reflex was used in this study to determine the site of thoracolumbar spinal cord dysfunction (T3-L3 or L4-L6) as a result of disc herniation. The results of neurological examinations were compared with the findings of CT myelography. This study was conducted on 21 dogs, selected from a total of 26 dogs confirmed to have a single thoracolumbar lesion. Results revealed that the accuracy of the patellar reflex for lesion localization was 71.4%. The accuracy of the patellar reflex (normal or hyperreflexic) for lesion localization in the T3-L3 segment in 15 dogs was 100%, while the accuracy of the …

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of doxorubicin (DOX) at the dose used in clinical practice (12-25 mg/m2 body surface area) on cardiac electrophysiology and proteinuria. Nine dogs with tumors were treated with 1st dose of DOX while 6 and 3 dogs were left for 2nd and 3rd doses, respectively. Measurements of blood chemistries, blood pressure, electrocardiography, heart rate variability and proteinuria were performed after the 1st, 2nd and 3rd doses of DOX. Infectious endocarditis (IE) is a heart valve or endocardial disease. Bartonella spp. are considered one of the causes of IE. The objective was to study the prevalence of canine IE in Bangkok, Thailand with an emphasis on Bartonella spp. infections. A review of the reports between January 1999 to December 2009 of 3,545 necropsied dogs was performed. Cardiac tissue blocks from 11 dogs were studied for the presence of eubacterial DNA and Bartonella spp. DNA by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and for Bartonella spp. DNA by conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR).The prevalence of canine IE was 0.65%. Acute hemorrhagic pneumonia caused by Streptococcus zooepidemicus has emerged as a major disease of shelter dogs and greyhounds. S. zooepidemicus strains differing in multilocus sequence typing (MLST), protective protein (SzP), and M-like protein (SzM) sequences were identified from 9 outbreaks in Texas, Kansas, Florida, Nevada, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania. Clonality based on 2 or more isolates was evident for 7 of these outbreaks. The Pennsylvania and Nevada outbreaks also involved cats. The objective of this study was to characterize kinetic and kinematic variables in dogs with forelimb lameness and determine lameness cutoff values of gait variables using ROC analysis with observational gait analysis (OGA) as reference. Twenty client-owned dogs with unilateral lameness were included. Dogs underwent orthopedic exam, including OGA, and instrumented gait analysis (IGA; kinetic and kinematic analysis). Kinetic variables with the highest accuracy were PVF and %WD with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.73 and 0.92, respectively. This clinical trial aimed to assess the intraoperative analgesic effect, based on the required minimum alveolarconcentration (MAC) of isoflurane, of transdermal fentanyl when compared with intramuscular morphine in dogsundergoing patellar luxation repair. Seventeen healthy dogs with grade II or grade III of medial patellar luxationwere randomly assigned to group M or group F, receiving a sham patch or a transdermal fentanyl patch (25 μg/h),respectively, applied on the skin at least 24 h prior to surgery. A fourteen-year-old female neutered Schnauzer was presented to the hospital with multiple syncopal episodes for two weeks. The dog appeared fatigue and sleepy but remained responsive. Clinical examination revealed bradycardia and irregular pulse. Electrocardiography showed sinus rhythm with repetitively long episodes of sinus arrest over 3 seconds, indicating sick sinus syndrome. The dog eventually underwent a transvenous single chamber permanent pacemaker. She was followed up for a month after surgery without recurrent syncope and irregular heart rate.

The objective of the present study was to investigate urinary protein profiles in dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in comparison to dogs with urinary tract infection (UTI). Animals were divided into 4 groups: control, CKD stages II+III, CKD stage IV and UTI. Blood pressure was measured using oscillometric method. This study used Pearson correlation test to analyze statistical correlation between shelter canine intake and number of dogs euthanized in municipal animal shelters in 20 counties/cities in Taiwan from 2001 to 2011. Data of animal shelters were official data provided by the Council of Agriculture, the competent authority of the Animal Protection Act in Taiwan. Among the 20 counties/cities in Taiwan, Hualien County, Penghu County, Keelung City, and Chiayi County were excluded from this study due to incomplete data. The aim of the study was to identify predictors of mortality and to propose a new severity scoring system in dogs with acute abdominal syndrome. A retrospective study was carried out on 58 dogs presented with acute abdominal syndrome with American Society of Anesthesiologists grades III-IV and treated surgically by exploratory laparotomy. Medical records were reviewed and information regarding dog signalment, history, clinical, and laboratory data; surgical findings; and outcome was collected. The purpose of this study was to report the incidence of articular cartilage injury of the stifle joint in 323 dogs found during surgery at orthopedic clinics in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from October 2006 to July 2012. A total of 44 dogs (13.6%) had cartilage lesions. Surgical operations in this study included the corrections of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture (14.2%), distal femur fracture (15.2%), and patellar luxation (66.6%), and the removal of the IM pin from the tibia (4%). The clinical outcome of PCSO-524 application in the treatment of canine osteoarthritis and spinal disorderwas studied at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, Chulalongkorn University. Eighty-four dogs were included inour study. Thirty-one dogs showed signs of osteoarthritis (OA) in both hip joints and shoulder joints; 33 dogs had OAin stifle joints from cranial cruciate ligament rupture; and 20 dogs had neurological signs of the cauda equinasyndrome. All affected dogs were treated by 50 mg/ 10 kg of PCSO-524, PO for twelve weeks. The Humane Society of the United States receives complaints about sick puppies on a daily basis. Over a five-year period (2007-2011), our puppy mills campaign received 2,479 puppy buyer complaints. The complaint came to The HSUS via our website complaint form (www.humanesociety.org/puppycomplaint), by email, and through our puppy mills tip line. Buyers complained about sick puppies sold by a variety of sources, including pet stores, breeders (both in person and online), or middleman dealers (sometimes known as brokers). A simple and rapid diagnostic method of Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection was established, employing the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) reaction. With 1 set of 4 specific primers targeting the citrate synthase (gltA) gene of A. phagocytophilum, the LAMP assay rapidly amplified the target DNA sequence in a single tube in 1 h, requiring only a water bath for reaction. When visualized by gel electrophoresis, the LAMP products appeared as a ladder-like pattern, with many bands of different sizes from 180 base pairs up to the loading well. In order to determine the seroprevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in suspected dogs in Minnesota, the present study examines the database of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Minnesota over a 10 year period (2001-June 2010). A total of 1081 serum samples from dogs suspected of having borreliosis were submitted by 112 private veterinary clinics. The samples were tested using an indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test. Samples with titers of =>1:320 were considered positive. The rate of seroprevalence of antibodies was 88%. The purpose of this study was to report on the incidence of patellar luxation in 128 dogs out of a total of 317dogs (40.3%) treated at orthopedic clinics in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from October 2006 through May 2011. Patellarluxation was most frequently found in small breeds, among which Poodles were the most commonly affected (34.3%).Most luxations were medial (89%), and 57.8% of affected dogs were female. Uniluxation of the patella was found in63%, and biluxation in 37%. Most dogs were classified as patellar luxation grade III. Blood pressure, renal function, urinary protein excretion and red blood cell count were measured in 29 dogswith chronic kidney disease which received hormone recombinant human Erythropoietin (rHuEPO). The experimentwas divided into 2 parts. Parts 1 comprised 3 groups of dogs. Group 1 dogs were studied prior to erythropoietin(EPO) injection (pre-EPO). Bartonella hensalae is a causative agent of cat scratch disease that has serious zoonotic potential for people.The aim of the present study is to examine seroprevalence of antibodies against B. hensalae in cats and dogs along thenorthern borders of Thailand in Chiangrai, Maehongson and Nan provinces using the indirect fluorescent antibodytest (IFA). Malassezia yeasts are commensal organisms on the skin of warm-blooded vertebrates. The lipid-dependent Malassezia species have recently been cultured from veterinary specimens. The present study investigated and compared different Malassezia species in the skin and external ear canal of healthy and diseased dogs. The sampling in the study was carried out on 152 animals, comprising 90 samples from the diseased group and 62 samples from the healthy group. Blood pressure, urinary protein creatinine (UPC) ratio and oxidative stress (plasma melondialdehyde, urinary melondialdehyde creatinine ratio; UMDA/Cr, the activities of red blood cell catalase; RBC-CAT and red blood cell glutathione) were studied in 42 dogs with urolithiasis and 14 control healthy dogs. The types and location of calculi were defined. The results showed that calculi preferentially found in male and female dogs were calcium oxalate and struvite, respectively. In female, calculi found mostly at urinary bladder while in male, they could be found in either urinary bladder and/or urethra. Dogs with urolithiasis were normotensive. Lateral Patellar Luxation In Three Pomeranian Dogs: A Case Report, Chalika Wangdee, Pinrath Torwattanachai

Three Pomeranians with bilateral lateral patellar luxation (LPL) were present at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. Trochlear block recession was performed on all the dogs. The additional procedures including lateral retinacular desmotomy, tibial derotation, imbrication of medial retinaculum, and/or proximal tube realignment. Medial transposition of the tibial tuberosity was additionally done in one dog. Recurrent right LPL was found and corrected in one leg of the second dog. Following at least 3 months, all three dogs walked, jumped, and put weight normally on the operated legs after the operation.

Myxomatous degenerative mitral valve disease (MVD) is the most common cardiac disease in dogs.Pathological changes of MVD include thickened redundant leaflets causing improper coaptation of leaflets, resultingin mitral valve regurgitation. The etiology of this disease is currently unknown. Thus, no drugs or treatments areavailable to slow down the disease progression. This article was written to summarize an update of canine MVD concerning clinical approach, etiology, and treatment.

Comparison of analgesic efficacy of 3 non-steroidal analgesic drugs (carprofen, vedaprofen and tepoxalin) were performed in 40 dogs after ovariohysterectomy. Oral administration of placebo (sugar pill), carprofen (4.4 mg/kg/day), vedaprofen (0.5 mg/kg/day), or tepoxalin (20 mg/kg/day) for 3 days were performed in dogs recovering from ovariohysterectomy. Numerical pain scores (descriptive and composite pain scores) were measured in blinded fashion by three investigators at 0, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 hrs following the recovery. The average descriptive and composite pain scores of dogs treated with carprofen or tepoxalin were significantly lower than that of the control group (p<0.05), however, no significance difference was found between the vedaprofen-treated and control groups (p>0.05). The present study provides the results from a comparative study of the 3 commonly used methods for total protein (TP) measurement. The experiments were carried out with 6 dogs (4-7 year-old, weighing 12.8 ± 1.4 kg). The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of canine ectoparasite infestation in pet dogs from the Shiraz area of southern Iran, with no known exposure to insecticides. In all, 160 dogs were examined for ectoparasites in each of the 4 seasons and samples were collected. The most common ectoparasite was Ctenocephalides canis, which infested 22 of the 160 dogs. Pulex irritans was identified on 2 of the dogs and 142 Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks were found on 13 dogs. Trichodectes canis was observed on 2 dogs and 8 dogs had Hippobosca flies, which were seen mostly in spring. …

The structures of the canine, rabbit, bovine and equine EIF2AK2 genes were determined. Each of these genes has a 5' non-coding exon as well as 15 coding exons. All of the canine, bovine and equine EIF2AK2 introns have consensus donor and acceptor splice sites. In the equine EIF2AK2 gene, a unique single nucleotide polymorphism that encoded a Tyr329Cys substitution was detected. Regulatory elements predicted in the promoter region were conserved in ungulates, primates, rodents, Afrotheria (elephant) and Insectifora (shrew).
