Hyarulonicacid (HA) is an abundant molecule found in synovial fluid and plays an important role as a lubricant and shock absorber for the joints. Nonetheless, the effects of synovial fluid replacement with HA after canine stifle surgery remains elusive. A retrospective study was conducted on 54 small breed dogs with either medial patellar luxation (MPL) or cranial cruciate ligament ruptures (CCLR). Dogs were classified as HA (21 with MPL-HA and 16 with CCLR-HA) or control (10 with MPL-C and 7 with CCLR-C) groups. This study was to investigate intraocular structures of canine absolute glaucomatous eyes using real time B-scan ultrasonography in accordance with the amplitude mode. Ten normal eyes and twenty absolute glaucomatous eyes were included in this study. Ocular biometry via closed-eye technique was performed usingthe Ultrascan®Imaging System (Alcon Surgical Laboratory,Fort Worth, USA), with a 10 MHz mechanical sector probe. Changes of intraocular structures were descriptively analyzed. Ocular biometry was measured, statistically analyzed and compared between both groups. Conversations in the field of anthrozoology include treatment and distinction of food animals, animals as workers versus pests, and most recently, emerging pet trends including the practice of pet parenting. This paper explores attitudes toward pet dogs in the shared social space of urban India. The data include 375 pen-and-paper surveys from students at CHRIST (Deemed to be University) in Bangalore, India. Reflecting upon Serpell’s biaxial concept of dogs as a relationship of affect and utility, the paper considers the growing trend of pet dog keeping in urban spaces and the increased use of affiliative words to describe these relationships. …

The effect of dexmedetomidine alone and when combined with pethidine on a minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of isoflurane was determined in 24 client-owned adult male dogs before castration. Dogs were assigned to Group 1 (n = 12; dexmedetomidine, 5 µg/kg IM) or Group 2 (n = 12; dexmedetomidine, 5 µg/kgand pethidine, 5 mg/kg IM) . Prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) parasites and the effect of associated factors were evaluated in household dogs from an urban area of Córdoba, Argentina. A total of 493 fecal samples were collected during 2010 and 2013 and processed with Willis` salt, Sheathers sugar flotation, and formol-ether concentration techniques. Overall prevalence of GI parasites was 45.23% (95% CI 40.83-49.62), and Ancylostoma caninum (30.83%) was the most frequent parasite, followed by Trichuris vulpis (9.94%), Cystoisospora spp. (7.71%), Toxocara canis (6.90%), and Giardia spp. (5.88%). Bone marrow was collected from 7 dogs and submitted to 3 different MSC isolation techniques (direct plating, red blood cell lysis and gradient density). The number of cells, expression of MSC markers and in vitro the osteogenic differentiation obtained from each technique were examined. In order to study in vivo the osteogenic capability of derived MSCs, non-union ulna lesions (n=3) were firstly induced by transplantation of a composite of polycarprolactone/ hydroxyapatite (PCL/HAp) scaffold experimentally on to a critical-size ulna bone defect. Oxidative stress can result from either the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or an impaired antioxidant system, or both. It causes damage to lipids, proteins and DNA. Therefore, oxidative stress may be involved in carcinogenesis, and is associated with many types of cancer in dogs. The objective of this study was to compare the levels of malondialdehyde, protein hydroperoxides, glutathione, retinol and alpha-tocopherol between dogs with mast cell tumors and clinically healthy controls. The objective of this retrospective study was to distinguish between dogs with pulmonary hypertension (PH) and non-PH by using parameters obtained from thoracic radiographs. Data of 72 dogs of small breeds aged more than 1 year old and weighing less than 10 kg were retrieved. Echocardiography was used as a gold standard to diagnose PH and separate the dogs into two groups: PH (n=15) and non-PH (n=57). Seven formulae were created from measurements on right lateral and ventrodorsal radiographic views. A novel membrane was previously found to be effective in preventing post-thoracotomy pleural adhesions in dogs. The aim of the present study was to verify the animals’ clinical condition, the biological fate of the residual membrane, the presence or absence of pleural adhesions, and any inflammatory reactions over a 10-week observation period following membrane implantation. Previous studies have arrived at no absolute conclusion regarding suture attachment sites using the extracapsular technique to repair cranial cruciate ligaments in dogs. Twenty-three client-owned dogs with degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLS) treated by decompressive surgery were included in this study. The dogs were assigned to postoperative medication protocols of tepoxalin (10 mg/kg, SID) for 2 weeks (8 dogs, group 1), of tepoxalin (10 mg/kg, SID) for 6 weeks (7 dogs, group 2), and of carprofen (2 mg/kg, BID) for 2 weeks (8 dogs, group 3). Alacepril is an ACE-inhibitor (ACE-I), which has unique properties including peripheral sympathoinhibitory effect and negative chronotropic effect, and it is suspected to have a superior cough suppressive effect in comparison to other ACE-Is. The purpose of the study was to evaluate whether switching to alacepril from other ACE-Is will alleviate the clinical symptoms of congestive heart failure (CHF) caused by mitral valve regurgitation (MR). The aims of this study were to evaluate the repeatability of neuromuscular transmission (NMT) monitoring by electromyography and to compare train-of-four (TOF) responses of thoracic limbs to those of pelvic limbs in dogs after atracurium administration. Seven healthy dogs were enrolled in the study. The dogs were anesthetized with midazolam, morphine, propofol and isoflurane three times with a washout period of seven days. In this research, we investigate the prevalence of Dirofilaria immitis infection in dogs using microscopical, serological, and molecular methods from the Central Anatolia Region (Sivas) of Turkey and reveal the associated risk factors. Whole blood and serum samples were obtained from 306 dogs older than 7 months. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the modified Knott's method (Knott) were used for detecting the microfilaria and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was applied for the presence of D. immitis antigens. Periodontal diseases are the most common infectious diseases of dogs. Up to now, the knowledge about periodontopathic bacteria in dogs remains sparse. The objectives of this study were to apply the Polymerase Chain Reaction-Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) technique, cloning and 16S rRNA gene sequencing to the investigation into subgingival plaque bacteria from healthy and periodontitis dogs; and compare DGGE patterns from the subgingival plaque of dogs and humans. A 10-year-old spayed female Maltese dog presented to a local animal hospital with a subcutaneous mass (4 x 3 x 3 cm) in the right shoulder region. Balloon valvuloplasty for correction of congenital pulmonic stenosis (PS) in two dogs by intervention technique was first reported in Thailand. Both dogs did not show any clinical signs related to congestive heart failure. Physical examination in both dogs revealed heart murmur. Electrocardiographs of both dogs were recorded and showed normal sinus rhythm with deep S wave. In the first dog, thoracic radiograph revealed cardiomegaly with enlargement of the main pulmonary artery and left deviation of the apex due to right ventricular enlargement. A prospective, randomized, single-blinded study was conducted to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of disease modifying osteoarthritis agents (DMOAAs) and carprofen by using force plate gait analysis and orthopaedic assessment score (OAS) in osteoarthritic dogs. Forty dogs with hip and/or stifle osteoarthritis (OA) were assigned randomly into four treatment groups: PCSO-524, treated with a marine-based fatty-acid compound; GC-ASU, treated with a combination of glucosamine-chondroitin sulphate and avocado/soybean unsaponifiables; CPF, treated with carprofen; and CPF-PCSO, treated with a combination of carprofen and PCSO-524. Microcystins are acute hepatotoxins of increasing global concern in drinking and recreational waters and are a major health risk to humans and animals. Produced by cyanobacteria, microcystins inhibit serine/threonine protein phosphatase 1 (PP1). A cost-effective PP1 assay using p-nitrophenyl phosphate was developed to quickly assess water and rumen content samples. Significant inhibition was determined via a linear model, which compared increasing volumes of sample to the log-transformed ratio of the exposed rate over the control rate of PP1 activity. We aimed to investigate the protective effects of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and silybin treatment on hepatorenal and hemostatic functions in dogs with endotoxemia. Healthy dogs (n = 20) were divided equally into 4 groups as control, SAMe + silybin (SS), lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and LPS + SS. Controls received 0.9% NaCl intravenously. Ultrasonographic examination of medial iliac and jejunal lymph nodes were performed in 36 dogs presented to the Department of Surgery and Radiology for spaying and castration. Ultrasonographic features such as length, height in longitudinal plane, shape, ease of scanning, echotexture, and echogenicity were recorded. The medial iliac and jejunal lymph nodes were scanned consistently in all 36 dogs. However, the presence of gas in the intestines affected the ease of scanning of the lymph nodes. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the electroencephalography (EEG) patterns between healthy and epileptic dogs, to analyze the diagnostic value of scalp EEG for canine epilepsy under sedation with dexmedetomidine and to provide canine standard protocol. EEG of 29 epileptic dogs and 17 control dogs was recorded. Normal patterns, interictal epileptiform, and non-epileptiform abnormalities were interpreted using visual analysis by board-certified epileptologists. Results revealed that 34% of the dogs with epilepsy did not show discernible abnormalities on their EEG recordings.
