The effect of epidural ketamine was studied in 20 experimental dogs premedicated with 0.04 mg/kg atropine and 2 mg/kg xylazine, given intramuscularly along with 0.2 mg/kg acepromazine given intravenously. All dogs received, epidurally, 2 mg/kg ketamine diluted in 0.9% normal saline (NSS) in a volume of 1 ml/ 4.5 kg and, one week or more before, or later, 1 ml/ 4.5 kg NSS without ketamine as a control. Animal response to pain stimulation was evaluated before, and during a surgical approach on the medial aspect of the tibia. An autogenous ilial graft was experimentally used for grafting the mandibles of 6 mixed-breed dogs, aged 1 to 5 years. To prepare the recipient bed, the mandibular shaft, under the fourth premolar tooth, was cut 2 cm deep and removed with the tooth. An ilial graft, the same size as the excised mandibular shaft, was harvested from the dorsal iliac crest of the same dog. The graft was then seated in the recipient bed and fixed to the mandible by a plastic bone plate and screws. Bone union was evaluated radiographically and histologically. A Retrospective Study Of The Treatment Of Paraplegic Dogs, Marissak Kalpravidh
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The case records of 11 dogs recovering from paraplegia, caused by vertebral fracture, vertebral luxation, spondylosis deformans or intervertebral disk protrusion, were studied. The dogs were examined and treated at the animal hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University from June 2000 to October 2004. Upon presentation, all dogs were paraplegic and had weak superficial or deep pain sensations. Only 9 dogs had voluntary motor function in their hindlimbs or tails. Two dogs received both surgical and medical treatment, while the others received only medical treatment, consisting of the administrations of corticosteroids, aescin, vitamin B1 and antibiotics for …

A study of canine, gastric, Helicobacter spp. infection was performed. A total of 56 biopsied samples of cardia, fundus, body and pyloric antrum, submitted to the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University, during October, 2001 to 2002, were investigated. The objective of this study was to detect Helicobacter spp. infections in the stomach of dogs and to confirm any relationship between the histopathological changes in the stomach with the presence of bacteria. The histopathological results revealed inflammatory cell infiltration 100%(56/56), crypt distortion 69.64%(39/56), lymphoid follicular formation 67.86% (38/56) and epithelial degeneration 28.57%(16/56). Serum total and bone alkaline phosphatase (TAP and BAP) including Ca and P were measured in 6 dogs with osteoporotic bone and 10 dogs with less than a week fracture presented to the Small Animal Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. The serum chemistry and ulnar radiographs were evaluated in plaster casting 9 normal experimental dogs before and after ulnar osteotomy on weeks 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16, postoperation. This study was carried out to determine the effect of transcervical and intravaginal artificial insemination on the pregnancy rate in dogs. Semen was collected by the massage method from dogs brought to our department. Collected semen was examined in the laboratory and stored in liquid nitrogen after dilution with Tris extender. During the study 31 bitches brought to our department for artificial insemination were used. One of the bitches was not evaluated. Eight dysplastic hips of seven dogs suffering from mild hip dysplasia, as classified by the Orthopedic Foundation of Animals (OFA), were treated using a modified pelvic fixation technique. After pelvic, ischial and ilial osteotomies, the pelvis was plane-adjusted and fixed using screws to increase the acetabular coverage over the femoral head. Evaluation was made of the animals gait, by hip palpation and by taking OFA standard, ventrodorsal radiographs before and immediately after the surgical operation, followed by further evaluation 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 weeks later. The aim of this study was to conduct a preliminary investigation on the effects of cola drink consumption on gingival health in dogs and thereafter to come up with an opinion as to what extent cola consumption has an impact on gingival health in humans. Forty-six formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded canine mammary tumors, 15 benign and 31 malignant, were studied immunohistochemically. Mouse monoclonal anti-alpha-cytokeratin 18, mouse monoclonal anti-alpha-cytokeratin (pan cytokeratin), mouse monoclonal anti-alpha-smooth muscle actin and mouse monoclonal anti-vimentin antibodies were used. The ductal and acinar epithelium stained positively for cytokeratin 18 and pan cytokeratin, although there was no immunoreactivity in some tumors. Metaplastic squamous cells in two solid carcinomas were positive for both cytokeratin 18 and pan cytokeratin. It was a notable finding that there were unreactive epithelial cells in some tumors for broad spectrum cytokeratin antibody (pan cytokeratin). Myofibroblasts in benign and malignant tumors were …

A total of 22 dogs of different breeds with persistent estrus, between the ages of 1.5 and 6, were used. Diagnoses were made by anamnesis, general examination and vaginal smear. Vulvar edema, colour and volume of vaginal discharge, convolution of the mucosa and volume of secretion were recorded before and after treatment. Dogs were treated with 25 mg megestrol acetate (Niagestine, 25 mg/ml, Novo). Clinical manifestations disappeared within 3-7 days. Vaginal discharge ceased in 3.5±2.5 days and vulvar edema ceased in 3.5±1.6 days. In only one dog, the treatment was not effective after 15 days. The vulva was still swollen …

In this study, the kinetic, structural and functional changes of the ventriculus in dogs with myocardial infarction introduced experimentally were examined using M-Mode and two dimensional (2-D) echocardiography. 21 healthy, mixed-breed dogs of both genders (16 females and 5 males) and of various ages were used in this study. Serum antibody titers against Canine Parvovirus (CPV) in puppies after the first CPV vaccination were studied. Total 58 serum samples were obtained from Small Animal Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. Results revealed by Hemagglutination Inhibition test showed that the puppies had HI-titers between 320-20,480 with Geometric Mean Titer (GMT) 2,717.6. In addition, another set of 56 samples obtained from puppies in Royal Thai Army Military Working Dog Center and private kennels before and 7, 14-day-post vaccination were included. Canine Parvovirus serum antibody titres in puppies before the first parvovirus vaccination were studied in Thailand. The titres were measured by haemagglutination inhibition test (HI). The puppies had HI titers between 320-10,240 with a mean of 1,280. There was no correlation between titres and either age or previous history of CPV vaccination in the bitches that produced the puppies. There was also no apparent association between titres and either sex or breed.
