The potential transmission of methicillin-resistant coagulase-positive staphylococci (MRCoPS) between dogs and human has been noted as of potential public health concern. The current study aimed to determine the emergence of methicillin-resistant coagulase-positive staphylococci (MRCoPS) in dogs after oral administration of cephalexin. Skin swabs from 38 dogs without a history of antibiotic exposure were collected before drug administration (pre-treatment dogs) and during drug administration within one month (treatment dogs). A total of 196 CoPS were isolated from the nose, perineum and skin lesions. Fewer MRCoPS were isolated from the pre-treatment dogs (7.89%) than from the treatment dogs (p<0.001). Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (S.) schleiferi subsp. coagulans (MRSSc) were only recovered from the treatment dogs, whereas methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP) were found in both groups. Overall, a high incidence of MRSP was found since the first week after administration. The nose and perineum were confirmed as the most common site of carriage of MRCoPS rather than the skin lesions. In conclusion, the oral cephalexin administration was associated with the emergence of MRCoPS on dog skin, a potential source of contamination to humans.

The aim of this study was to develop a novel in vivo corneal model of fibrosis in dogs utilizing alkali burn and determine the ability of suberanilohydroxamic acid (SAHA) to inhibit corneal fibrosis using this large animal model. To accomplish this, we used seven research Beagle dogs. An axial corneal alkali burn in dogs was created using 1 N NaOH topically. A 7-year-old Chow Pei was referred to an animal hospital for the evaluation of a 1-month history of abdominal distension and exercise intolerance. A systolic murmur was auscultated over the tricuspid valve (TV). Thoracic radiographs showed cardiomegaly, right atrial enlargement, and pulmonary edema. Electrocardiography revealed small QRS complexes and a right-bundle brunch block. Echocardiography also showed right atrial enlargement and tricuspid insufficiency due to the presence of a mass on the posterior leaflet of the TV. Canine leishmaniasis (CanL) is a protozoal disease caused by Leishmania species. Dogs play an important role as a reservoir. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of CanL by molecular and serological techniques among stray dogs living in kennels in Aydın, Manisa, and İzmir, located in western Turkey. Blood samples were collected from a total of 191 dogs and analyzed using indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of autologous neurogenically induced bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (NIBM-MSCs) in two dogs suspected to have fibrocartilaginous embolic myelopathy (FCEM). Both dogs were paraplegic without deep pain perception (DPP) and tentatively diagnosed by MRI. Autologous NIBM-MSCs (5 × 106) were transplanted into the lumbar subarachnoid space two times with a 21-day interval for each patient. Based on a 21-month follow-up of the treated animals, the transplantation of NIBM-MSCs seems to be promising in subjects with FCEM lacking DPP.

Merkel cell tumors, a type of cutaneous round-cell tumors, are rarely observed in dogs and cats. This tumor type originates from cutaneous neuroendocrine cells. In the present study, the morphology of canine and feline Merkel cell tumors and their immunoexpression of neuron-specific enolase, cytokeratin, chromogranin A, Ki67, and metallothionein were evaluated using histopathological and immunohistochemical methods. The canine Merkel cell tumor displayed a diffuse morphological pattern, whereas the feline tumor displayed a solid morphological pattern. The first case interventional technique of Patent Ductus Arterious (PDA) correction was conducted in a 2 years old Golden Retriever. The dog was presented with continuous murmur with a marked left-side heart enlargement, insufficiency of pulmonic, mitral, and aortic valves. Fifteen Dachshunds, 6 females and 9 males, aged from 3 to 7.1 years old and weighing from 8.9 to 18.4 kg, were presented with various degrees of paralysis with deep pain on both limbs. Visual evoked potential (VEP) is a useful technique for evaluation of optic nerve pathway and diagnosis of human Alzheimer’s disease. Canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD) is an age-related neurobehavioural syndrome which is commonly underdiagnosed in dogs. In the present study, VEPs were recorded from 28 Pomeranian dogs including 9 normal dogs aged between 1-8 years, 9 normal dogs aged over 8 years, and 10 dogs with signs of CCD. The aims of this study were to investigate the levels of lactate and glucose in dogs during swimming and to determine the maximal lactate steady state in small and large breeds of dog. Twelve healthy dogs, including small breed (n = 6) and large breed (n = 6), were the study subjects. After swimming for different periods (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 min), blood was collected from the dogs which was then used to analyze changes in lactate and glucose levels during swimming. Background: Brachycephalic dog breeds are increasingly common. Canine brachycephaly has been associated with upper respiratory tract (URT) disorders but reliable prevalence data remain lacking. Using primary-care veterinary clinical data, this study aimed to report the prevalence and breed-type risk factors for URT disorders in dogs. Results: The sampling frame included 170,812 dogs attending 96 primary-care veterinary clinics participating within the VetCompass Programme. Escherichia coli strains from dogs with different clinical signs were studied for their antimicrobial sensitivity profiles, extended spectrum beta-lactamase enzymes, and virulent genes. The 364 E. coli isolates originated from the skin (32.48%), urinary tract (31.32%), gastrointestinal tract (16.21%), reproductive system (7.69%), ear (6.05%), respiratory tract (4.94%), and other specimens (1.37%). Using the disk diffusion method, the E. coli were resistant to amoxicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, azithromycin, cephalexin, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, gentamicin, and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim at the rates of 84, 36, 41, 57, 38, 66, 73, 70, 64, 47, and 64%, respectively. The aim of this study was to determine concentrations of manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), and strontium (Sr) in the cartilage, compact bone, spongy bone, and cartilage with adjacent compact bone of the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris). The experiment was carried out on bones from the hip joints of 24 dogs (dogs of 8 years) from northwestern Poland. The concentrations of Mn, Fe, and Sr were assessed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Fe concentration was the highest in the cartilage and compact bone. Five intestinal layers are commonly described ultrasonographically in dogs. However, current high-frequency endosonography allows the identification of 9 layers in people. The aim of this study was to describe ex vivo small intestinal layering in dogs and correlate ultrasonographic layering with histological layers. Our hypothesis was that, similar to findings in humans, discrepancies exist in thickness and visibility of intestinal layers between histology and ultrasound in dogs. Twelve adult dogs were included in the study. They were euthanized for reasons unrelated to gastrointestinal disease, but extensive medical history was unavailable. The New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) (NZGLM), a well-known source of n-3 PUFAs, has been shown to have a highly-potent anti-inflammatory action. The dietary fatty acid supplement used in this study was obtained from the NZGLM by a patented supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction method. Effects of the dietary PUFA supplement on healthy Beagle dogs on hematology, blood chemistry and blood coagulation profiles were evaluated. The objective of this study was to examine the expression of 4 clinically-important Mex systems including MexAB-OprM, MexCD-OprJ, MexEF-OprN and MexXY in the Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates from dogs and cats. The isolates exhibited high level of resistance to multiple antibiotics clinically important. All of them simultaneously overexpressed up to three different Mex systems, including MexAB-OprM, MexEF-OprN and MexXY as determined by RT-PCR. None of the isolates overexpressed MexCD-OprJ. Acute spinal cord injury (ASCI) has two pathophysiological stages of injury: the primary injury and the secondary injury cascade. Primary injury includes the initial or mechanical insult to the spinal cord. Secondary injury is a cascade of biochemical events that propagates damage of adjacent, healthy tissue increasing the overall volume of spinal cord tissue that is affected. Acrolein is a toxic byproduct of lipid peroxidation produced during secondary injury. Cell junction and cornified envelope are groups of proteins that are crucial for the formation and stability of the skin barrier. The purpose of this study was to investigate gene expression in cell junction and cornified envelope groups in canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) in small dog breeds. A 9 – year – old, 6.2 kg female Shitsu dog with a repeated history of pododemodicosis was presented at the animal hospital. The dog had been previously treated with miticides such as ivermectin injections and oral milbemycin oxime, but the clinical signs recurred every time after the therapy had been stopped. Microscopic examination of skin samples from the dog revealed the presence of Demodex canis. A spot – on formulation composed of 2.5% moxidectin and 10% imidacloprid was applied to the dog weekly. The objective of this study was to compare blood glucose concentrations obtained from two portable blood glucose meters (PBGM), Sure-step™ and Accucheck™, with reference method, glucose oxidase test. Blood samples were collected from dogs consulting in Small Animal Hospital, Chulalongkorn University. A hundred and thirty four blood samples were collected in the study. Blood glucose concentrations were measured by using Sure-step™, Accucheck™ and glucose oxidase method respectively in all samples. The intra-class correlation was determined to evaluate the correlation between each PBGM and glucose oxidase test. The range of the blood glucose concentrations was 31.47 to 347.49 mg/dl. This study was conducted to determine the effects of rapid ventricular pacing on cardiac function and hemodynamics, and to determine the most suitable QTc formula for the effects of alterations in the RR interval on the QT interval of conscious dog with heart failure (HF). Electrocardiograms were acquired from dogs (n=18) at baseline and after rapid ventricular pacing (6, 9, 12 weeks). RR and QT intervals were measured and QTc intervals were calculated using 3 common formulae (Bazett, Fridericia and Van de Water). HF was confirmed by reduced left ventricular fractional shortening (p<0.05), significantly faster heart rate (p<0.001) and significantly changed QT and QTc intervals (p<0.001) when compared to the baseline. This model also demonstrated decreased systolic arterial pressure (p<0.01) and increased BNP (p<0.05). The appropriate regression equations were QT = 152.4+0.08RR for normal dogs and QT = 32.3 (RR) 0.29 for HF dogs. In normal dogs, the Van de Water formula reveals the least dependency of QTc on RR interval. In HF dogs, the Fridericia formula appears to be the best equation to remove the influence of heart rate.

Cervical vertebral malformations can cause acute or progressive pain, paralysis, and potentially death. Herein we present a case report of dens agenesis; cervical vertebral malformations of C1, C2, C6, and C7; subluxation of C1 and C2 and C4 and C5; and associated degenerative myelopathy in a 5-month-old female Labrador Retriever puppy. We additionally review current knowledge regarding pathogenesis and treatment.

Cardiac tumors account for a small proportion of all canine tumors, but hemangiosarcoma represents the most frequent cardiac tumor in many species. Hemangiosarcoma occur intrapericardially with pericardial effusion. In this case report, a retrospective study was conducted on 9 cases of canine hemangiosarcoma. In all the dogs the presence of a pericardial exudate was noted and in 5 cases it was the only lesion detected during the examination. A 10-month-old, unilateral cryptorchid, male English bulldog underwent urethropexy for the treatment of urethral prolapse. Six hours after surgery the dog developed dysuria, haematuria, discomfort, severe penile oedema, inflammation, and inability to extrude the penis from the prepuce. Urethral patency was restored by placing an indwelling catheter into the urethral lumen. Penile swelling was managed with cold and warm compresses for 2 days, and antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and opioids for 4 days. Complete resolution of the swelling was evident by 3 days after surgery. One year after surgery the dog was reported to be in good health.

Both cattle and dogs were examined in modern and rural dairy farms that had a history of abortion over 5%. The blood samples were collected from 427 aborted cattle and the sera were tested using a commercial ELISA test kit. Additionally, a necropsy procedure was carried out on the fetuses and calves dead within 2 months after birth; the tissue samples were evaluated by histopathologic, immunoperoxidase, and PCR techniques.
