The potential value of bolus tracking contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of oral tumors in dogs was investigated by examining the relationship between contrast-enhanced CT image density and microvascularization. Among 20 dogs with oral tumors, aged 8 – 17 years, weight 3.6 – 40.0 kg, 13 dogs were suffering with melanoma (MM), 4 with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and 3 with fibrosarcoma. Canine colonic duplication is a rare congenital anomaly, usually symptomatic in the first year of life, with the common signs of bowel obstruction. Most importantly, colonic duplication in an adult dog has not been reported. This case document reports a non-communicating tubular colonic duplication with concurrent retroperitoneal mass in a 3- year-old female crossbred dog, presented for further diagnosis and treatment of the abdominal mass. Without any remarkable clinical signs, physical examination noted only abdominal distension with mild discomfort. The clinical benefits of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) have been well documented in heart failure patients. In veterinary medicine, however, the clinical benefits of CoQ10 have not been well established in dogs with heart diseases. This study aimed to determine the effects of CoQ10 supplementation on 1) preventing myocardial injury 2) cardiac function 3) autonomic balance in dogs with myxomatous degenerative mitral valve disease (MMVD). Thirteen dogs with MMVD at ACVIM stage C were recruited in this study. Dogs were further divided into group I (Body weight [BW] < 6 kg.; n = 7) and group II (BW ≥ 6 kg.; n = 6). Cardiac troponin I (cTnI), echocardiographic examination, and 2 hours of Holter recording were performed on Day 0 and after receiving CoQ10 at 100 mg/dog twice daily for 28 days. CoQ10 caused a reduction of cTnI level in 71% of the dogs. Median cTnI tended to cause tended to decline but not significantly. Systolic function [i.e. fractional shortening (FS) and ejection fraction (EF)] increased significantly by 8 % and 9% (P < 0.05), respectively in group I after CoQ10 supplementation. Other echocardiographic parameters were not altered in either group. HRV analysis revealed no change in autonomic function and balance. cTnI negatively correlated with FS (P < 0.01) and positively correlated with LF/HF ratio (P < 0.05). In conclusion, this study demonstrated the clinical benefits of CoQ10 supplementation in dogs with MMVD. CoQ10 improves cardiac function in small dogs with MMVD. Finally, supplementation of CoQ10 in dogs should be based on body weight.

Removal of a GnRH agonist deslorelin implant either before or during ovulation in deslorelin-induced oestrous bitches is suggested because prolonged administration of the slow-release agonist may compromise luteal function secondary to pituitary down-regulation. This study aimed at investigating the effect of 4.7 mg deslorelin (Suprelorin®) on oestrous induction, ovulation and conception rate after removing the implant 72-96 hours postovulation to ensure that the entire ovulation process was complete. Nine dogs that met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in this study. Globally, epilepsy is a common serious brain disorder. In addition to seizure activity, epilepsy is associated with cognitive impairments including static cognitive impairments present at onset, progressive seizure-induced impairments and co-morbid dementia. Epilepsy occurs naturally in domestic dogs but its impact on canine cognition has yet to be studied, despite canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD) recognised as a spontaneous model of dementia. A case of traumatic myiasis caused by the Musca domestica (Linnaeus 1758) housefly was detected in a dog in Konya, Turkey. A 4-year-old Kangal breed dog injured in a traffic accident was brought to the surgery clinic of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Selçuk University in Konya, Turkey for treatment. Several dipterous larvae were collected from the wound of the dog, placed in a petri dish with 70% ethanol, and sent to the parasitology laboratory for identification. This report describes the inflammation caused by Capillaria hepatica in the liver of a female stray dog of approximately 2 months old for the first time in Turkey. Histopathological examination revealed severe granulomatous hepatitis with occasional adult nematodes and abundant eggs in the hepatic parenchyma. The present case differs from the other capillariasis cases by the age of the dog and the presence of mature female parasites and severe inflammation.

Ocular B-mode ultrasonography is one of the noninvasive, rapid diagnostic imaging techniques indicated in canine cataract patients to evaluate the posterior segment of the eye. This study was conducted on twelve eyes of dogs with a history of cataract, which were scanned under topical anesthesia. The preoperative and postoperative ultrasonographic biometry, and ultrasonographic features of the lens, intraocular lens (IOL), and posterior segment were recorded. There was a significant difference between pre- and postphacoemulsification mean value of the axial length of globe and anterior chamber depth. Radial carpal bone luxation is rarely encountered in dogs. A literature review did not reveal any case of bilateral radial carpal bone luxation or its treatment. In the current case study, the process and result of the treatment of a dog with bilateral radial carpal bone luxation, brought to the İstanbul University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine?s Department of Surgery is presented. Treatment of luxation was achieved by using screws and cerclage wire. The long-term follow-up of this patient was limited to only 2 months since the dog was not brought back to the clinic.

The purpose of this open-label clinical trial was to evaluate the efficacy of these two products for the management of canine localized superficial pyoderma. It was speculated that pneumothorax occurred in the right pleural space after X-ray examination. Thoracocentesis and chest tube were applied for 5 days. A 2.5-year-old small male Cavalier King Charles spaniel was brought to Ondokuz Mayıs University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Animal Hospital with symptoms of severe watery diarrhea, pain during defecation, intermittent cough, vomiting, and emaciation. Examination of the fecal smear revealed moderate infection of Strongyloides stercoralis larvae and two adult females. Counting of the larvae in feces was performed by Baermann method and 20 larvae were determined per gram of feces. The dog was treated with ivermectin (Avromec, 0.2 mg/kg subcutaneously) and multivitamin syrup (Vitabiol) for 5 days for supporting the body condition. This paper is the first clinical case report …

This study aimed to evaluate the hemostatic function by thromboelastography (TEG) and determine if there was an association between the changes in hemostatic parameters and serum cardiac troponin I (cTnI) in dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). DCM was diagnosed by echocardiography in 19 dogs. Ten healthy dogs were selected as controls. Myocardial injury was confirmed by increased serum cTnI levels. Perineal hernia (PH) in dogs normally requires surgical reconstruction of the pelvic diaphragm. The use of fascia lata grafts has been reported and described in previous studies for the correction of PH after failure of the conventional herniorrhaphy. The purpose of this report is to describe a modified technique of fascia lata flap (FLP) for PH repair in dogs. Six client-owned male dogs with PH were included in the study. Skin biopsied tissues from two dogs, initially diagnosed as hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma (HHS) by histopathology, were immunostained with a series of antibodies against lambda light chains, kappa light chains, multiple myeloma oncoprotein 1 (MUM-1), CD-3, paired box 5 (PAX-5), E-cadherin and lysozyme. Heteroduplex polymerase chain reaction for antigen receptor rearrangements (hPARR) was additionally performed on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues to rule out lymphomas from histiocytomas. Results showed that both cases were immunopositive for lambda light chains, MUM-1, PAK-5 and lysozyme, indicating a diagnosis of extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP). A 7-year-old, 10 kg male poodle dog was presented at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, with the clinical signs of chronic coughing, bad deglutition and severe respiratory distress. On oral examination, a large mass arisen from the throat was found. Because the skull-cervical radiographs revealed only a large soft tissue pharyngeal mass which were difficult to indicate the mass types and the tissue invasiveness, the computed tomography (CT) was subsequently applied. The CT result showed that the mass was an encapsulated hypoattenuation mass (2.5 x 4.3 x 2.4 cm) at the right pharyngeal area without any adjacent soft tissue invasions. …

This research aimed to identify the reference value of activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) in normal dogs using crude cephalin prepared in-house from canine brain, and to examine its efficacy in detecting disorders of coagulation factors. A total of 105 blood samples were collected from normal dogs between January-May 2010. The APTT value was found to be 10.43-19.08 seconds and significantly correlated with the APTT value of a test using a commercial reagent (Pearson’s correlation, r = 0.9923, p < 0.001). On testing the reagent’s efficacy in detecting disorders of coagulation factors by using cryopoor plasma, it was discovered that the APTT value ranged from 24.50 to 33.44 seconds, and the mean value of the APTT by means of cryopoor plasma was significantly greater than that of normal dogs (p < 0.001). The aforementioned APTT value significantly correlated with that obtained by means of a commercial reagent (Pearson’s correlation, r = 0.9984, p < 0.001). From this research, it can be confirmed that in-house crude cephalin can be substituted for commercial crude cephalin. Besides, the obtained reference range can further be applied in veterinary hematology laboratory.

Recently, alternative medical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) using intra-prostatic injection of botulinum toxin type A (BT-A) has been reported in men and mice. However, in terms of animal welfare, it remains questionable when applied to clinical use. This study aimed at evaluating the effects of intra-prostatic injection of BT-A (Botox, Allergan, USA) in dogs.
