Other than genome structure, influenza C (ICV), and D (IDV) viruses with seven-segmented genomes are biologically different from the eight-segmented influenza A (IAV), and B (IBV) viruses concerning the presence of hemagglutinin–esterase fusion protein, which combines the function of hemagglutinin and neuraminidase responsible for receptor-binding, fusion, and receptor-destroying enzymatic activities, respectively. Whereas ICV with humans as primary hosts emerged nearly 74 years ago, IDV, a distant relative of ICV, was isolated in 2011, with bovines as the primary host. BACKGROUND: Cyathostomins are the most important and common parasitic nematodes of horses, with > 50 species known to occur worldwide. The frequent and indiscriminate use of anthelmintics has resulted in the development of anthelmintic resistance (AR) in horse nematodes. In this study we assessed the efficacy of commonly used anthelmintics against cyathostomins in Australian thoroughbred horses.

This research investigates the impacts of invasive wild pigs (Sus scrofa Linneaus) on agricultural producers in Texas, with the aim of identifying and describing all categories of wild pig impacts and quantifying the extent of producers’ over- or underestimation of their total wild pig-related costs in 2018, as compared to calculations based upon data subsequently provided by the producers about individual wild pig-related costs and losses. Based on interviews with 23 producers in 16 Texas counties, we identified more than 20 discrete categories of negative impacts and negligible positive impacts associated with wild pigs. However, research surrounding animal maltreatment has expressed this issue as an individually-based problem, rather than a community-based phenomenon. Correlations have been found between animal cruelty, antisocial behaviors, and future interpersonal violence, whether this correlation be a predictive relationship, or a resultant relationship. Habitat fragmentation and degradation have led to a proliferation of small and isolated populations that are vulnerable to genetic erosion. Reduction in habitat and concomitant declines in population connectivity can expediate the collapse of species that exist as natural metapopulations. In recent years, Allegheny woodrats (Neotoma magister) have experienced local extirpations and declines in genetic diversity across their range due to disease-related mortality, reduced food availability, and disruption of connectivity among subpopulations. Toxic baiting of wild pigs (Sus scrofa) is a potential new tool for population control and damage reduction in the US. Field trials testing a prototype toxic bait (HOGGONE 2 containing 5% sodium nitrite [SN]), though, revealed that wild pigs spilled small particles of toxic bait outside of bait stations which subsequently created hazards for non-target species that consumed those particles, primarily passerine birds. A challenge that conservation practitioners face is manipulating behavior of nuisance species. The turkey vulture (Cathartes aura) can cause substantial damage to aircraft if struck. The goal of this study was to assess vulture responses to unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for use as a possible dispersal tool. Our treatments included three platforms (fixed-wing, multirotor, and a predator-like ornithopter [powered by flapping flight]) and two approach types (30 m overhead or targeted towards a vulture) in an operational context. In efforts to improve profitability, sows have been subject to ongoing selection for larger litters. The current dogma is that larger litters improve sow productivity. This review, however, will question the validity of this assumption. It is inescapable that very large litters will have longer farrowing durations, lower average and more variable birth weights, and the sows will have insufficient teats available to feed their piglets. This is a recipe for increased piglet mortality with associated ethical considerations. Banteng (Bos javanicus), an endangered, wild ungulate, plays a major role in seed dispersal and as a prey animal in Thailand. The population of wild banteng is threatened by poaching and habitat losses. Captive breeding management of banteng has been established and reintroduction of banteng has been successful in some areas. This study investigated the genetic variation of wild and captive banteng, based on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and the Y-chromosome. The mtDNA analysis revealed three novel maternal haplotypes. Acquired idiopathic megaoesophagus in dogs is rarely found in Indonesia. In this case report, a dachshund dog was presented with a history of vomiting after eating. Clinical examination, complete blood count, kidney, and liver tests identified only minor dehydration. On observation of the dog after eating, the sign reported as vomiting was confirmed as regurgitation. Radiography and contrast studies identified a significantly dilated oesophagus. With an absence of other clinical abnormalities, the dog was diagnosed with idiopathic megaoesophagus and prescribed treatment with sildenafil twice daily at 0.75mg/kg for five days, along with postural management of feeding. The survey abdominal radiographs demonstrated only a caudal large oval soft tissue abdominal mass and abdominal ultrasonography was suggested to indicate the mass origin. Anthrax is a disease of concern in many mammals, including humans. Management primarily consists of prevention through vaccination and tracking clinical-level observations because environmental isolation is laborious and bacterial distribution across large geographic areas diffi cult to confi rm. Feral swine (Sus scrofa) are an invasive species with an extensive range in the southern United States that rarely succumbs to anthrax. A 1-year-old castrated male Ragdoll who showed a series of vomiting and had reduced appetite presented to a local animal hospital. Hyperthermia and tachypnea were observed in physical examination, and leukocytosis was detected in hematological examination. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed an intramural mass with irregular echogenicity extending from the pylorus to the duodenum and loss of intestinal wall layer with regional lymph node enlargement. After exploratory laparotomy for biopsy and symptomatic alleviation, histopathological evaluation revealed densely infiltrated eosinophils within the branching and anastomosing trabecular pattern of collagen by several spindle-shaped cells. A 4.2 kg 10 – year – old spayed female Siamese short – haired cat was presented with a 5 – month history of severe dermatitis. A ten-year-old, 16.7 kg mixed-breed dog presented with chronic lameness and delayed healing of discharging wounds in the right pelvic limb following a puncture injury for approximately 6 months. Debridement surgery had been performed, but the tissue infection was persistent. Plain radiographic examination showed neither increased soft tissue opacity nor foreign body (FB) existence near the discharging wound of the right pelvic limb. Intranasal administration of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) vaccine may induce mucosal and systemic immune responses in goats but little is known about the influence of the vaccine application methods. The objective of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of a basal serum thyroxine (T4) and thyrotropin (TSH) combination test for the diagnosis of canine hypothyroidism in clinical practice.
