Our aim is to compare the effect of warm water infusion and air infusion enteroscopy on the success rate of colonoscopy in a rat model of colorectal cancer. 60 rats with colorectal cancer were divided into 2 groups: the air infusion (AI) group taking air infusion enteroscopy and the warm water infusion (WWI) group taking warm water infusion enteroscopy. The success rate, testing time, pain score and diagnostic value of these two groups were evaluated. Cathelicidin in milk was reported as a possible protein marker for the assessment of the severity of subclinical mastitis. We hypothesized that cathelicidin would be elevated in the mastitic milk of the Streptococcus agalactiae-subclinical mastitis and the elevation of cathelicidin may be related to somatic cell count (SCC). Western blot was used to determine the amount of cathelicidin to differentiate between normal milk and S. agalactiae subclinical mastitic milk. The correlation between amount of cathelicidin and the SCC was also determined. We found that S. agalactiae subclinical mastitis induced cathelicidin expression in milk. Stereotypies are repetitive and relatively invariant patterns of behavior, which are observed in a wide range of species in captivity. Stereotypic behavior occurs when environmental demands produce a physiological response that, if sustained for an extended period, exceeds the natural physiological regulatory capacity of the organism, particularly in situations that include unpredictability and uncontrollability. One hypothesis is that stereotypic behavior functions to cope with stressful environments, but the existing evidence is contradictory. To address the coping hypothesis of stereotypies, we triggered physiological reactions in 22 horses affected by stereotypic behavior (crib-biters) and 21 non-crib-biters (controls), using an ACTH challenge test. …

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are enteric pathogens of humans. Cattle serve as a reservoir and harbor STEC in their intestines. Intimin-positive STEC are referred to as enterohemorrhagic E.coli (EHEC). Seven serogroups (O26, O45, O103, O111, O121, O145, and O157) account for the majority of illness due to STEC and are hereafter referred to as STEC/EHEC-7. To improve detection, enrichment broths were compared for supporting growth of STEC-7 and STEC O104:H4 (STEC-8). In pure culture, STEC enriched in trypticase soy broth (TSB) had significantly greater growth compared to TSB containing antimicrobials. In fecal samples, E. coli broth enrichment yielded …

Neuroinvasive herpesviruses display a remarkable propensity to enter the nervous system of healthy individuals in the absence of obvious trauma at the site of inoculation. We document a repurposing of cellular ubiquitin during infection to switch the virus between two invasive states. The states act sequentially to defeat consecutive host barriers of the peripheral nervous system and together promote the potent neuroinvasive phenotype. The first state directs virus access to nerve endings in peripheral tissue, whereas the second delivers virus particles within nerve fibers to the neural ganglia. In this study, using an immunoprecipitation coupled with mass spectrometry approach, we have identified the E3 ubiquitin ligase Trim21 as an interacting partner of IFI35 and Nmi. We found that this interaction leads to K63-linked ubiquitination on K22 residue of Nmi, but not IFI35. Using domain deletion analysis, we found that the interaction is mediated via the coiled-coil domain of Nmi and the carboxyl-terminal SPRY domain of Trim21. Furthermore, we show that depletion of Trim21 leads to significantly reduced interaction of Nmi with IFI35, which results in the abrogation of the negative regulatory function of the Nmi-IFI35 complex on innate …

A high-passage rabbit kidney RK-13 cell line (HP-RK-13[KY], originally derived from the ATCC CCL-37 cell line) used in certain laboratories worldwide is contaminated with noncytopathic bovine viral diarrhea virus (ncpBVDV). On complete genome sequence analysis, the virus strain was found to belong to BVDV group 1b.

We describe a case of an infant with recurrent bacteremia caused by Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus, likely transmitted from mother to infant. Our case highlights the importance of an epidemiological history and molecular diagnostics in ascertaining insights into transmission, pathogenesis, and optimal management.

The effect of low-dose chemotherapy on tumor motility of canine oral malignant melanoma has been investigated on an in vitro model using low-dose cyclophosphamide and piroxicam. Cyclophosphamide, at a concentration of 0.1 mg/mL in culture medium, significantly inhibited tumor cell migration/invasion through trans-well assays and suppressed both ERK and NF-κB signaling, the latter of which was observed through IκB-α and P-IκBα expression. Furthermore, in combination with a COX-2 inhibitor, i.e. piroxicam (0.38 mg/mL in culture medium), cyclophosphamide revealed a potential anti-migration effect over the single piroxicam treatment on a wound assay. Sapoviruses (SaVs) are emerging enteric pathogens that cause diarrhea in humans and animals. In the current study, genetic identification of sapovirus (SaV) in suckling piglets was investigated in Hunan province, China between May 2013 and May 2014. Diarrheic fecal (n=300) samples collected from suckling piglets in Hunan province, China were evaluated using RT-PCR and then sequenced. Overall, 45 of the 300 (15%) samples were found to contain porcine SaV. In addition, phylogenetic analysis showed that all the porcine SaV isolates belonged to the porcine SaV genogroup III (GIII). Fifteen Dachshunds, 6 females and 9 males, aged from 3 to 7.1 years old and weighing from 8.9 to 18.4 kg, were presented with various degrees of paralysis with deep pain on both limbs. The existence of clinical signs was observed by the owners and ranged from 1 to over 7 days. These dogs showed grades of dysfunction ranging from 2 to 5 depending on neurological examination. Hansen type I IVDD was diagnosed in these dogs based on the neurological and imaging examination. Hemilaminectomy was performed on these dogs. Non-antibiotic feed additives have been developed to be used as alternatives, but none of them is effective as antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs). Understanding other mechanisms related to growth promoter of AGPs may be beneficial to the search for effective feed additives for animal production. In vitro and in vivo studies were conducted to evaluate the free radical scavenging activities of flavophospholipol and avilamycin. The in vitro study showed that flavophospholipol had a potent scavenging activity for DPPH, hydroxyl and nitric oxide radicals with the exception of superoxide anion radicals and their IC50 were 155.1, 62.6 and 105.6 mg/l, respectively. Degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) is the major cause of mitral valve regurgitation and heart failure in dogs. The regurgitation of mitral valve may affect blood pressure without clinical presentation. The aims of this study were to compare the systolic blood pressure between normal dogs and dogs affected with asymptomatic DMVD (class B ACVIM classification) and to determine the relationship between echocardiographic values and blood pressure levels. Firocoxib and carprofen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), are used in the treatment of canine osteoarthritis. This study evaluated the efficacy and provided information of these NSAIDs in clinical practice. Sixteen healthy dogs of large breeds over 5 years old without systemic diseases and pregnancy that had coxofemoral osteoarthritis were divided into 2 groups, firocoxib group (n=9) and carprofen group (n=7). The study was conducted for 16 weeks. However, it is rarely reported in Thailand; even at Bung Boraphet, which is an important wetland bird area located in the central part of Thailand, it still has never been reported. Tembusu virus (TMUV) namely KPS54A61 has spread in duck farms in many provinces in Thailand since 2010. The morbidity ranges from 15-30% and the mortality ranges from 10-15%. All infected ducks exhibit nervous signs including ataxia and paralysis. TMUV was successfully isolated from the brain and spinal cord of infected ducks by using C6/36 and Vero cells, but the typical cytopathic effect (CPE) was presented in the Vero cells only. Phylogenetic analysis of the whole genomic sequence of our TMUV-KPS54A61 virus showed that it belonged to the Ntaya virus group of Flaviviridae and its genomic sequence was similar to that …

Canine osteoarthritis is a common disease in clinical practice. Causes of canine osteoarthritis are obscure. At present, nutraceuticals and hyaluronic acid are used for the treatment of canine osteoarthritis. This study assessed the efficacy of intraarticular administration of hyaluronic acid on the treatment of canine osteoarthritis. After undergoing surgical correction of cranial cruciate ligament rupture, 16 dogs were divided into 2 groups, HA and control groups. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the electroencephalography (EEG) patterns between healthy and epileptic dogs, to analyze the diagnostic value of scalp EEG for canine epilepsy under sedation with dexmedetomidine and to provide canine standard protocol. EEG of 29 epileptic dogs and 17 control dogs was recorded. Normal patterns, interictal epileptiform, and non-epileptiform abnormalities were interpreted using visual analysis by board-certified epileptologists. Results revealed that 34% of the dogs with epilepsy did not show discernible abnormalities on their EEG recordings. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) are known as pathogens associated with chronic diseases in cat. This present study determined the prevalence of FIV and FeLV infections in Bangkok and its vicinity, including Nonthaburi and Pathumthani, during April 2013-March 2014 in owned cats. A total of 777 serum or plasma samples were submitted to a private veterinary laboratory in Bangkok. The prevalence of FIV infection, FeLV infection and co-infection was 5.4% (42/777), 16.5% (128/777) and 3.5% (27/777), respectively. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Lactobacillus plantarum on enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) in order to reduce lesions and fecal shedding for the control of colibacillosis and edema disease in postweaning pigs. ETEC K88 colonized in greater abundance on the surface of the small intestinal tract of non-L. plantarum-fed pigs compared to L. plantarum-fed pigs. Reduced intestinal adherence and fecal shedding of ETEC K88 was observed in the L. plantarum-fed pigs, whereas brain lesions and fecal shedding of STEC F18 remained unchanged. Visual evoked potential (VEP) is a useful technique for evaluation of optic nerve pathway and diagnosis of human Alzheimer’s disease. Canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD) is an age-related neurobehavioural syndrome which is commonly underdiagnosed in dogs. In the present study, VEPs were recorded from 28 Pomeranian dogs including 9 normal dogs aged between 1-8 years, 9 normal dogs aged over 8 years, and 10 dogs with signs of CCD. Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella and Campylobacter species isolated from duck laying flocks in 7 confinement systems and 7 free-grazing systems were determined in central Thailand. In the confinement system, 13.8% (88/639) of Campylobacter spp. were isolated from cloacal swabs; 72.7% was identified as C. jejuni and 27.3% was identified as C. coli. From drinking and surface water samples, 60.0% of Campylobacter spp. were isolated; all was identified as C. jejuni. In this study, nine crude extracts from Thai plants in the Moraceae and Leguminosae families were screened for their immunoadjuvant activities on the proliferation of swine lymphocytes and the maturation of monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MoDCs). The study demonstrated that the total phenolic content was significantly higher in the extract from Artocarpus gomezianus (264.17±6.5 mg of gallic acid equivalents/gm of extract) than in the extracts from the other plants. The crude extract from the root bark of A. gomezianus significantly increased the proliferative response of peripheral blood mononuclear cells measured using both MTT and CFSE assays (p < 0.05). In addition, the A. gomezianus extract induced the maturation of MoDCs through major histocompatibility (MHC) Class II and CD80 expression. Constituents of phenolic compounds, in particular tannins and flavonoids in the gamma-benzopyrone nucleus group, may be important for the immunoadjuvant effect. The results of this study suggest that the extract from A. gomezianus have immunoadjuvant activities that may be developed as vaccine adjuvants.

Matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9 (MMP-2 and -9), gelatinases among MMPs, are associated with cell migration, invasion, metastasis and angiogenesis in human solid tumor. The prognostic value of gelatinases in canine lymphoma remains equivocal. To evaluate the relation between serum gelatinases and canine lymphoma, gelatin zymography was used to detect the levels of serum MMP-2 and MMP-9 gelatinase activities in lymphoma-bearing dogs. In this retrospective study, twenty-four canine patients with different subtypes of lymphoma were identified according to the histopathogical examination, and 10 healthy dogs were included as control.
