A critical question surrounding emergence of novel strains of avian influenza viruses (AIV) is the ability for wild migratory birds to translocate a complete (unreassorted whole genome) AIV intercontinentally. Virus translocation via migratory birds is suspected in outbreaks of highly pathogenic strain A(H5N1) in Asia, Africa, and Europe. As a result, the potential intercontinental translocation of newly emerging AIV (e.g. A(H7N9) from Eurasia to North America via migratory movements of birds) remains a concern. An experiment conducted in El Reno, Oklahoma during the fly season (May - September/October) evaluated the effects of horn flies on milk production, calf performance, and pasture behavior and temperament measurements of beef cow calf pairs. Cows (n = 53) sired by Bonsmara (BONS; n = 7), Brangus (BRAN; n = 13), Charolais (CHAR; n = 8), Gelbvieh (GELV; n = 5), Hereford (HERF; n = 12), and Romosinuano (ROMO; n = 8) from Brangus dams and their Angus sired calves (n = 51) were used in the study. Obesity is an epidemic in many developed nations and maternal obesity can result in developmental alterations in offspring that have long-lasting effects. Two experiments were conducted to determine the impact of maternal obesity on placental development and early embryonic growth and muscle development. Experiment one utilized obese Lethal Yellow (LY) and normal weight C57BL/6 (B6) dams to assess how maternal obesity alters skeletal muscle development in mid-gestational embryos. Embryos from LY dams exhibited decreased embryo and placental weights as well as an increase in the myogenic marker desmin. Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) is a sever disorder characterized by high pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance along with specific histological changes. Idiopathic PAH is a human disease of unknown origin that showed common characteristics to PHS/ascites in chicken. PHS/ascites is a condition found in broilers causing right ventricular hypertrophy, valvular insufficiency, increased venous pressure, variable liver changes, accumulation of fluids in the abdominal cavity, and finally lung and heart failure. The pathogenic virus Panulirus argus virus 1 (PaV1) was first discovered in Caribbean spiny lobsters Panulirus argus from the Florida Keys (USA) in 1999 and has since been reported in Belize, Mexico, and Cuba; its distribution in the wider Caribbean is unknown. We collected tissue samples from adult spiny lobsters from 30 locations in 14 countries bordering the Caribbean Sea and used molecular diagnostics to assay for the presence of PaV1. Rearing birds on wire flooring has proven to be an effective method for consistently triggering significant levels of lameness in broilers, and while the wire flooring model has been proven effective, more mobile wire floor models have been developed to compliment the facility management conditions within commercial genetic selection programs. The mobile wire floor models have been titled "speed bumps", and through previous evaluation have resulted in significantly higher levels of lameness in broilers compared to litter floor shavings. BACKGROUND: A striking characteristic of the past four influenza pandemic outbreaks in the United States has been the multiple waves of infections. However, the mechanisms responsible for the multiple waves of influenza or other acute infectious diseases are uncertain. Understanding these mechanisms could provide knowledge for health authorities to develop and implement prevention and control strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We exhibit five distinct mechanisms, each of which can generate two waves of infections for an acute infectious disease. Dr. James Howard Snook was born in South Lebanon, Ohio in Warren County in 1879. He was both an alumnus and later a faculty member of the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1922 Dr. Snook married Helen Marple and had a daughter. In 1926 Dr. Snook began an affair with an OSU medical student, Theora Hix. The affair lasted about 2 years. During a visit in 1929 Theora Hix allegedly threatened to harm Dr. Snook's wife and child. Dr. Snook murdered her and was sentenced to death in February of 1930.

BACKGROUND: Strongyle parasites are ubiquitous in grazing horses. Strongylus vulgaris, the most pathogenic of the large strongyles, is known for its extensive migration in the mesenteric arterial system. The lifecycle of S. vulgaris is characterised by a long prepatent period where the migrating larvae are virtually undetectable as there currently is no test available for diagnosing prepatent S. vulgaris infection. Presence of S. vulgaris larvae in the arterial system causes endarteritis and thrombosis with a risk of non-strangulating intestinal infarctions. Antibacterial Activity Of Tannin From Sweet Chestnut Wood Against Aeromonas And Streptococcal Pathogens Of Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus), Hathairat Maisak, Sasibha Jantrakajorn, Mintra Lukkana, Janenuj Wongtavatchai

The present study determined the inhibitory effect of tannin from sweet chestnut wood against tilapia Oreochromis niloticus bacterial pathogens, Aeromonas hydrophila (20 isolates) and Streptococcus agalactiae (20 isolates). Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) corresponding to tannin and oxytetracycline (OTC) for A. hydrophila were 18.75-300 μg/ml and 0.125-128 μg/ml; and for S. agalactiae were 600 μg/ml and 0.5-8 μg/ml, respectively. The antibacterial potency of tannin from sweet chestnut wood was found in the test system of pH: 6.5-7.0, suggesting that the inhibitory effect of tannins is unrelated to their acidity property. Morphological Aspects By Light And Scanning Electron Microscopic Studies Of Swamp Buffalo Endometrium At Follicular And Mid-Luteal Phases, Paisan Tienthai, Kriengyot Sajjarengpong

This study was carried out to observe morphological changes of swamp buffalo endometrium at follicularand mid-luteal phases. Uterine horns were collected from female buffaloes at a local abattoir and the selected estrousstages were categorized into the follicular (n = 10) and mid-luteal (n = 10) phases. General histology andhistomorphometry were examined under light microscope (LM) whereas a scanning electron microscope (SEM) wasused to study surface epithelial changes. The results showed that the height of the endometrial epithelium, thenumber of superficial endometrial glands and the number of capillaries were significantly greater (p < 0.05) at thefollicular phase. By SEM examination, the ciliated and secretory cells with different patterns, i.e. abundant microvillion the apical part or secretory protrusion in various degrees, distinctly increased at the follicular phase. In themeantime, numerous secretory cells with stubby microvilli were covered throughout the endometrial surface withsecretory vesicles on endometrial glandular orifices at the mid-luteal phase in which the ciliated cells were sparselyseen. It was concluded that the swamp buffalo endometrium obviously revealed modifications during the estrouscycle for physiological events, i.e. sperm transport, early embryonic development and implantation.

The present study investigated the association among serum insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), backfatthickness, and age at first observed estrus in replacement gilts. In total, 80 replacement gilt, Landrace (L, n = 48) andYorkshire (Y, n = 32), were included. The gilts were determined for age at first observed estrus between 167 to 212days of age. They were categorized according to age at first observed estrus into ≤ 200 days (n = 41) and > 200 days (n= 36) groups. The objective of the present study was to investigate urinary protein profiles in dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in comparison to dogs with urinary tract infection (UTI). Animals were divided into 4 groups: control, CKD stages II+III, CKD stage IV and UTI. Blood pressure was measured using oscillometric method. Pooled semen samples were prepared from eight fish, and divided into five groups according to the concentrations of L-cysteine as follows: 0 (T1), 0.5 (T2), 1.0 (T3), 1.5 (T4) and 2 (T5) mM. Mutation of the G6S gene in Anglo-Nubian (AN) goat causes non-function of the N-acetylglucosamide 6- sulfatase enzyme within lysosomes, which increases heparin sulfate accumulation and induces pathogenesis of the internal organs. Transversion of base C to T at nucleotide 322 changes decoding of an amino arginine to a stop codon (R322X) and produces a truncated protein. This mutation is detrimental to the health of a goat kid leading to delay in nervous development and death. Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is an important food-borne zoonotic protozoa. Infection occurs when humans and warm-blooded animals consume raw or lightly cooked cysts containing meat or sporulated oocysts contaminated food. To study the subchronic and chronic lung effects of low dose of Diesel Exhaust Particles (DEPs), mice were intratracheally instilled with 50 μg of DEPs. Cellular and biochemical parameters in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and histological alteration were determined at 90, 120, 150 and 180 days after instillation. From BALF results, exposure to 50 μg of DEPs did not cause any pulmonary inflammation. However, mild to moderate pulmonary changes evidenced by multifocal DEPs laden alveolar macrophages (AMs) aggregation, type II alveolar cell proliferation, thickening of alveolar wall, interstitial fibrosis and edema were observed in treated mouse lungs. Acute and subchronic tests on the toxicity and reproductive effects of aqueous ethanolic extract of rhizomes of Lasia spinosa Thw. was studied in male rats. In the acute test, oral administration of 5, 10, 20, 40 g/kg of the extract showed no mortality or behavioral changes. In the subchronic test, administration of 5 or 20 g/kg of the extract for 28 days revealed no mortality of the animals. No differences in hematological parameters were observed in either control or treatment groups of both tests. In the present decade, kisspeptin has been a fascinating topic in the reproductive spotlight. Kisspeptin is a neuropeptide, produced mainly in the hypothalamus from Kiss1 gene. This gene was initially discovered in 1996 as a tumor suppressor gene in human malignant melanoma. Then in the year 2003, researchers found that mutations of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPR54), which is the strongly cognate receptor of kisspeptin, were associated with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in mice and humans.
