Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis: Investigation Of Genetic Susceptibility And Assessment Of An Equine Infection Method, Breanna M. Gaubatz
Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis: Investigation Of Genetic Susceptibility And Assessment Of An Equine Infection Method, Breanna M. Gaubatz
Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) is a progressive neurological disease of horses caused by Sarcocystis neurona. Two projects were conducted to identify factors involved in the development of EPM. The first study explored a possible genetic susceptibility to EPM by attempting a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue from 24 definitively-positive EPM horses. DNA extracted from tissues older than 14 months was inadequate for SNP analysis on the Illumina Equine SNP50 BeadChip probably due to degradation and formalin cross-linking. Results were inconclusive as analysis was not possible with the small sample set. The second study evaluated an …
Determination Of Farm-Specific Lawsonia Intracellularis Seroprevalence In Central Kentucky Thoroughbreds And The Identification Of Factors Contributing To Equine Proliferative Enteropathy, Allen E. Page
Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
Lawsonia intracellularis and the disease it causes in horses, equine proliferative enteropathy (EPE), is an emerging pathogen of increasing importance to the horse industry from both an economic and welfare standpoint. Long recognized as an economically important disease of swine, the hallmark of EPE is a protein-losing enteropathy, where affected horses suffer weight loss and some ultimately succumb to the disease despite aggressive treatment. There are currently no known EPE preventative measures and the epidemiology of the disease remains poorly defined. While EPE is a sporadic disease affecting less than 25% of exposed horses, some farms experience clinical cases year …
Chondrodysplasia-Like Dwarfism In The Miniature Horse, John E. Eberth
Chondrodysplasia-Like Dwarfism In The Miniature Horse, John E. Eberth
Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
Dwarfism is considered one of the most recognized congenital defects of animals and humans and can be hereditary or sporadic in cause and expression. There are two general morphologic categories within this vastly diverse disease. These categories are disproportionate and proportionate dwarfism and within each of these there are numerous phenotypes which have been extensively described in humans, and to a lesser extent in dogs, cattle, mice, chickens, and other domestic species. Ponies and Miniature horses largely differ from full size horses only by their stature. Ponies are often defined as those whose height is not greater than 14.2 hands; …
Signal Transduction And Rickettsial Infection Of Tick Cells, Natthida Petchampai
Signal Transduction And Rickettsial Infection Of Tick Cells, Natthida Petchampai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia are obligate intracellular bacteria that are carried by ticks. One such tick, Dermacentor variabilis is a vector for the etiologic agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, R. rickettsii. These ticks also carry a non-pathogenic R. montanensis, the agent used in this study. Interestingly, field data collected from infected D. variabilis throughout the United States revealed that the majority of Rickettsia in ticks are non-pathogenic species such as R. montanensis. Although ticks serve as both vector and reservoir hosts for SFG Rickettsia, many questions regarding tick-Rickettsia interaction remain unresolved. Therefore, the overall goal of this research …
Computed Tomographic Assessment Of Canine Arytenoid Lateralization, James Richard Wignall
Computed Tomographic Assessment Of Canine Arytenoid Lateralization, James Richard Wignall
LSU Master's Theses
Unilateral arytenoid lateralization is a commonly performed surgical treatment for laryngeal paralysis in dogs. It involves fixing the moveable arytenoid cartilage to the thyroid (TAL) or cricoid (CAL) cartilage or both (CTAL). This increases the area of the rima glottidis (RGA), to allow reduced airway pressure and laryngeal resistance in vitro and ameliorates clinical signs in vivo. It may also increase the patient’s predisposition for aspiration pneumonia, which occurs in around 20% of clinical patients. No surgical technique has been correlated with clinical outcome or risk of aspiration pneumonia. Objective analysis of the effects of surgery on the three dimensional …

Copper Oxide Wire Particles Used To Control Haemonchus Infections : Efficacy In Giraffe (Giraffa Camelopardalis) At Busch Gardens Tampa And Potential Mechanism Of Action, Allyson Kinney Moscona
LSU Master's Theses
Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections affect production systems and exotic hoofstock in zoos, particularly giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis). Anthelmintic resistance (AR) prevalence is increasing in production systems and zoos. To combat the AR that compounds GIN problems, alternative control methods are used. One such alternative is copper oxide wire particles (COWP), which control the abomasal nematode Haemonchus contortus. COWP was given to seven adult giraffe at Busch Gardens Tampa, at descending dosages: 25 g, 12.5 g, 6.3 g. Treatment administration time was determined by fecal egg count (FEC) being above 600 eggs per gram (EPG), and therefore varied with each animal. FEC …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of feeding two commercially available direct-fed microbials (DFM) on finishing steer performance fed steam-flaked corn based diets. Dietary treatments included a control diet without DFM, and two commercially available products (10-G and Bovamine). No significant differences were observed among treatments for animal performance or carcass characteristics. However, numeric advantages were observed for ADG and feed efficiency when cattle were fed a DFM.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Calves backgrounded in a forage-based system at a high winter supple- mentation level maintained a performance advantage through finishing. High level supplemented cattle gained an additional 0.2 lb. daily during finishing, consumed less total feed in the feedlot, required fewer days on feed to reach a common finish point and produced an additional 85 lb. of saleable live weight compared to cattle backgrounded at a low supplementation level. High level supplemented cattle returned $56.01 more than cattle fed a low level of supplementation during the winter backgrounding phase.
Veterinary Specialty Certification: Analyzing The Value Of Certification Through The American Board Of Veterinary Practitioners, Jeff Allen
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
When it comes to professional certification a number of potential benefits can be cited by the organizations that offer them. Self-improvement, recognition by peers, public benefit and enhanced career opportunities are just a few of the frequently mentioned values associated with certification programs. This study was conducted to identify the primary benefits of certification for the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) by recording and analyzing the perceived value of ABVP certification within the veterinary community. Application Of Pcr-Rflp Technique To Determine Booroola Gene Polymorphism In The Sangsari Sheep Breed Of Iran, Reza Jamshidi, Mohammad Mahdi Kasirian, Ghodrat Allah Rahimi
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Phenotypic evaluation and the culling of candidate animals for traits by applying traditional animal breeding are usually costly tasks, which need to be carried out over a considerable span of time. The use of molecular genetics as an alternative method enables animal breeders to select eligible animals for the desirable trait, or traits, at earlier ages. Selection based upon markers could result in increased accuracy as well as a better selection response of animals. The Booroola gene has long been recognized as a candidate gene responsible for a higher rate of ewe ovulation, which results in increased litter size. In …

Effects Of Essential Oil Compounds On Survival Of Listeria Monocytogenes And Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In Çiğ Köfte, Abdullah Di̇ki̇ci̇, Osman İrfan İlhak, Mehmet Çalicioğlu
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of some essential oil compounds for the inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 in çiğ köfte. In experiment 1, a çiğ köfte batch was inoculated with high levels of E. coli O157:H7 or L. monocytogenes (7.00 log_{10} cfu/g) and the batches were divided into 6 groups. Each group was treated with 18 mL/kg of normal saline, cineole, limonene, carvone, linalool, or eugenol. Treatment with carvone, linalool, and eugenol resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the numbers of both pathogens. In experiment 2, the çiğ köfte was inoculated with the same pathogens and each group was treated with 0 (control), 20, 22.5, and 25 mL/kg of eugenol. Increases in concentration did not cause a difference in pathogen reduction. The results showed that eugenol, carvone, and linalool can be used for the inactivation of E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes in çiğ köfte or similar foods.

Endometritis In Simmental Cows: Incidence, Causes, And Therapy Options, Robert Zobel
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objectives of this study were to evaluate endometritis incidence and possible causes, and to assess the different therapy options. From a total of 1300 cows, endometritis was diagnosed in 23.07%, with clinical endometritis in 15.31% and subclinical endometritis in 7.77%. Previous dystocia resulted in 40.59% of the clinical endometritis and 47.52% of the subclinical endometritis (P < 0.05). Placental retention caused clinical and subclinical endometritis in 43.18% and 37.50% of the cows, respectively (P < 0.05). Body condition score 2 resulted in the highest endometritis rate and body condition score 3-4 resulted in the lowest endometritis rate (P < 0.05). Corpus luteum was found in 9.67% of the cows suffering from endometritis, while the rest developed various types of subfertility (P < 0.05). Three groups of cows (A, B, and C) with an almost equal number of clinical and subclinical endometritis diagnoses were formed. All of the groups received prostaglandin analogues (PGF Veyx Forte®, Veyx Pharma) intramuscularly 3 times at 11 day intervals. In group A, only prostaglandins were used; in group B, cephapirin (Metricure®, Intervet Schering-Plough) was administered into the corpus uteri simultaneously with the first 2 doses of prostaglandins; and in group C, the first 2 doses of prostaglandins were followed by the ozone product Riger Spray (Novagen, Italy) applied into the uterus. The criteria applied for the therapy success were the number of cows conceived after the first artificial insemination and the number of days open. The best therapy results were achieved in groups C and B (P < 0.05), with the advantage of no milk and meat withdrawing period in the animals of group C.
