The aim of this study was to compare effects of inorganic sulfate versus chelated forms of supplemental Cu, Mn, and Zn on milk production, plasma and milk mineral concentrations, neutrophil activity, and antibody titer response to a model vaccination. Holstein cows (n = 25) were assigned in 2 cohorts based on calving date to a 12-wk randomized complete block design study. Glutaredoxin 2 (Grx2), a thiol-regulating enzyme of oxidoreductase family and a mitochondrial isozyme of glutaredoxin 1, was discovered 11 years ago in our laboratory. Grx2 is present in the lens where it shows dethiolase, peroxidase, and ascorbate recycling activities. Recently, Grx2 has also been identified to protect the mitochondrial electron transport system with anti-apoptotic function. Since other eye tissues besides the lens are rich in mitochondria and are very sensitive to oxidative stress, we speculate the presence of Grx2 therein as an important redox regulator. The canonical flow of visual signals proceeds from outer to inner retina (photoreceptors→bipolar cells→ganglion cells). However, melanopsin-expressing ganglion cells are photosensitive and functional sustained light signaling to retinal dopaminergic interneurons persists in the absence of rods and cones. Here we show that the sustained-type light response of retinal dopamine neurons requires melanopsin and that the response is mediated by AMPA-type glutamate receptors, defining a retrograde retinal visual signaling pathway that fully reverses the usual flow of light signals in retinal circuits.

BACKGROUND: Equine rhinitis viruses A and B (ERAV and ERBV) are common equine respiratory viruses belonging to the family Picornaviridae. Sero-surveillance studies have shown that these two viral infections are prevalent in many countries. Currently, the diagnosis of ERAV and ERBV infections in horses is mainly based on virus isolation (VI). The stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, is a cosmopolitan pest of livestock, wild animals, pets, and humans. It is a primary pest of cattle in the United States, estimated to cause more than $1 billion in economic losses annually. It also causes dissension at the rural-urban interface and is a problem in recreation areas such as Florida beaches and the Great Lakes. This cross-sectional study was introduced to determine the risk factors of subclinical mastitis in dairy farms. Sixteen small holder farms and 285 milking cows in Khon Kaen province were selected for the study. The mastitis investigation, feeding information and clinical inspection were applied in the farm visits. Milk samples from each quarter with a CMT score of 3 and bulk milk were collected for bacterial identification and somatic cell counts. The prevalence of subclinical mastitis and associated factors were analyzed. Results found that the prevalence of subclinical mastitis was 36.14%. Warm-water streptococcosis outbreaks in Thai cultured tilapia are caused by Streptococcus iniae and S.agalactiae. However, distinguishing between these two species of streptococcus are very difficult due to their similarmicrobiological appearance and clinical signs of infected fish. In this study, we proposed a new duplex-PCR basedmethod for simultaneous detection of these pathogens. The duplex-PCR amplified partial lctO and 16s rRNA gene ofS. iniae and S. agalactiae at 870 bp and 220 bp, respectively. A seroepidemiological survey was carried out to investigate seroprevalence of Neospora caninum in swamp buffaloes from five provinces in north-eastern Thailand, and to compare infection status in swamp buffaloes and beef cattle at one area of Thailand. A single serum sample was collected from each of 532 swamp buffaloes and 78 beef cattle during January and July 2009. Antibodies against N. caninum were analyzed by a commercial ELISA test. Chisquare tests were used to compare the seroprevalence between species, gender and age groups in Khon Kaen. Plasmid Profiles Of Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia Coli From Clinically Healthy Swine, Khin Khin Lay, Nisit Chansong, Rungtip Chuanchuen

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A total of 145 Escherichia coli isolates originated from clinically-healthy pigs were analyzed for plasmidprofiles. All but one isolate (n=144) carried one to nine plasmids with size ranging from 0.7-16.2 Mda. Fifty-sixplasmid profiles were defined based on sizes and numbers of plasmids in each strain, of which the most commonpatterns were 15.8, 4, 3.3, 1.7, 1.3 Mda and 16.2, 15.8, 4, 3.3, 2.3, 1.7, 1.3, 1, 0.7 Mda. The results indicate widedistribution of plasmids among the commensal E. coli isolates originated from clinically-healthy pigs.

The present study was performed to find the therapeutic effects of 2 mg/kg prednisolone orally fed twice a day in cats with immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). Six IMHA positive cats were diagnosed with Coomb’s test. Mean age of IMHA cats was 4.4 years old. They were considered as having secondary IMHA. The mortality rate of IMHA cats received prednisolone treatment was 33.3%. Complete blood count and blood chemistry values were all within the normal limit.

Matrix metalloproteinases are a family of calcium-dependent and zinc-dependent endopeptidases, which excrete from many cell types. These enzymes can hydrolyze extracellular matrix proteins. The most important inhibitor of MMPs is tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). The imbalance between MMPs and TIMPs causes pathological condition in human and animals. This review focuses on structural, role and several reports of MMPs in horse, dog, cat, fish and avian. Over production of MMPs is associated with tissue destruction and erosion of cartilage in equine osteoarthritis, especially MMP-2 and MMP-9. In this study, body measurements of Turkish Arabian foals at different ages was obtained from Anadolustate farm in Turkey which included body length, cannon bone circumference, heart girth and withers heightmeasurements. Effects of sex, birth month, birth year and age of foal at different growth periods on withers height,body length, heart girth and cannon bone circumference were significant (p<0.05). Effects of environmental factors onall body measurements were standardized additively. Using intra-class correlation method, repeatability was 0.55 forwither height, 0.47 for heart girth, 0.26 for cannon bone circumference for forelimb and 0.31 for body length.According to moderate level results of repeatability for especially heart girth and wither height measurements,selection of Turkish Arabian foals may be conducted at an early age according to body measurements at 6 months ofage.

Data of purebred Landrace, Large White and their crossbreds taken from a commercial swine farm locatedin the north-eastern part of Thailand were used to evaluate the genetic associations of stillbirth with the total numberof piglets born and gestation length. The analyses were base on 28,275 litters born from 2002 to 2006. Analysis wascarried out with a multivariate animal model using average information REML procedures. Heritability estimates forstillbirth, the total number of piglets born and gestation length were 0.03±0.01, 0.03±0.01 and 0.16±0.01, respectively.The genetic correlation between the total number of piglets born and stillbirth was positive. The purpose of this study is to detect Babesia canis by using 18S rDNA amplification in order to confirm thepresence of the agents and to characterize molecularly the Thai B. canis. Three sets of primers, a Babesia canis-specificprimer (BcSP), Piroplasm-specific primer (PSP) and Babesia species-specific primer (BsSP), were tested for sensitivity.The results showed that BcSP and PSP were 50 times more sensitive than BsSP. Both BcSP and PSP were specificenough to detect this parasite in asymptomatic dogs. Ae. aegypti mosquitoes collected during threeseasons and blood specimens taken from patients with suspected dengue were detected and serotyped for dengueviruses using RT-PCR. The biting behavior of Ae. aegypti females was studied by 24-hour mosquitoes collection once amonth using human bait for determination of seasonal biting rate. A total of 310 fecal samples of yellow cattle were collected in Taiwan and its offshore islands Penghu andKinmen for gastrointestinal parasite examination using coprological techniques. The overall prevalence was 73.2%.The infection rates of protozoa, nematodes, trematodes, and cestodes were 57.7%, 37.7%, 17.1%, and 0.6%,respectively. Among all parasites, Cryptosporidium spp. (41.6%) were the most predominant, followed by strongyles(36.1%) and Eimeria spp. (11.9%). There were significant differences in the prevalence of protozoa and nematodesbetween different distributional area groups. The present study demonstrates that gastrointestinal parasiticinfections, particularly protozoan infections, occur frequently in yellow cattle in Taiwan and its offshore islands. Although neosporosis has long been detected in several wildlife species from different parts of the world,until now there has been no report of Neospora caninum infection in elephants in any country of the world. Serumsamples of 115 captive elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) from the westernmost province of Kanchanaburi, Thailandwere investigated for antibodies to N. caninum and Toxoplasma gondii. Antibodies of N. caninum were detected by thecompetitive ELISA (cELISA) test and T.gondii by the Latex agglutination (LAT) test.
