Abstract Background: Concurrent infection with porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is known as one of the major causes for porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC). Dual infection with PCV2 and PRRSV is consistently to have more severe clinical presentations and pulmonary lesions than infection with PCV2 alone or PRRSV alone. However, it is not known if dual infections with PCV2 and PRRSV in different infection order may lead to different clinical symptoms in the host. PURPOSE. To study the effect of age on the morphologic and biochemical alterations induced by in vivo exposure of ultraviolet radiation (UV).
METHODS. Young and old C57BL/6 mice were exposed to broadband UVBþUVA and euthanized after 2 days. Another batch of UV-exposed young mice was monitored for changes after 1, 2, 4, and 8 days. Age-matched nonexposed mice served as controls. Lens changes were documented in vivo by slit-lamp biomicroscopy and dark field microscopy photographs ex vivo. Lens homogenates were analyzed for glutathione (GSH) level, and the activities of thioredoxin (Trx), thioltransferase (TTase), and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PD). Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a fundamental role in the immune system by detecting pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) to sense host infection. Ethanol at doses relevant for humans inhibits the pathogen induced cytokine response mediated through TLRs. The current study was designed to investigate the mechanisms of this effect by determining whether ethanol inhibits TLR3 and TLR4 mediated TNF-? secretion through inhibition of transcription factor activation or post-transcriptional effects. The domestic dog offers a unique opportunity to study complex disorders similar to those seen in humans, but within the context of the much simpler genetic backgrounds of pure breeds, which represent closed populations. We performed a whole-genome search for genetic risk factors of adult-onset deafness in the Border Collie, a breed of herding dog that relies on acute hearing to perceive and respond to commands while working. Adult-onset deafness in Border Collies typically begins in early adulthood and is similar to age-related hearing loss in humans. Canine urinary incontinence is commonly encountered in small animal veterinary practice with highprevalence in spayed female dogs. The diagnosis of neutering-induced urinary incontinence is usually based onclinical signs, history and elimination of other possible diagnoses. The proposed predispositions to incontinence thatfollows neutering including gender, breed, body weight, obesity, tail docking, spaying technique (ovariectomy andovariohysterectomy) and morphology of the LUT, e.g. the position of neck of the bladder and urethral length, have allbeen investigated. The clinical outcome of PCSO-524 application in the treatment of canine osteoarthritis and spinal disorderwas studied at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, Chulalongkorn University. Eighty-four dogs were included inour study. Thirty-one dogs showed signs of osteoarthritis (OA) in both hip joints and shoulder joints; 33 dogs had OAin stifle joints from cranial cruciate ligament rupture; and 20 dogs had neurological signs of the cauda equinasyndrome. All affected dogs were treated by 50 mg/ 10 kg of PCSO-524, PO for twelve weeks. This study was conducted to investigate Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection in mammal and avian byusing mice and baby chickens as model animals. Thailand 2010 and Ross/186 strain (reference strain) were used inthis study. 104, 106 and 108 CID50 of CHIKV were inoculated to four- and six-week-old mice. This study reports the side effects in dogs from swimming in a chlorinated swimming pool. Data werecollected from September 2008 until April 2012. A total of 412 dogs (male= 219 and female= 193), aged 38±30 months,served as the subjects. The dogs were divided into four groups based on the aims of swimming: entertainment (n=152), weight reduction (n= 53), rehabilitation after orthopedic surgery (n= 81), and rehabilitation for muscle and jointdisease (n= 126). The data were recorded for five separate swimming times. At first, some dogs (29.13%) showedoverexcitement and/or fear, but this percentage decreased with increased swimming frequency. A red-shanked douc langur (Pygathrix nemaeus nemaeus) is currently enlisted as an endangered primatespecies. This study was undertaken to describe the gross anatomy, histology and ultrastructural morphology of thedouc langur term placenta by light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. The primary disc of bidiscoidalplacenta was separated to 4-6 small cotyledonary subdivisions and was attached by an umbilical cord. The chorionfrondosum of placenta was classified as villous, haemomonochorial and deciduate type. The interhaemal area wascomposed of a layer of syncytiotrophoblast that occasionally clustered as the syncytial knot, fetal capillaryendothelium and its basement membrane. Enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) is caused by bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection. BLV was detected incattle using nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and were identified BLV infected cattle farms in fiveselected provinces in the Philippines. A total of 300 cattle blood samples were used. BLV Proviral DNA wasextracted and amplified using nested PCR assay targeting the BLV long terminal repeat (LTR). Results showed that11 samples (3.67%) of the 300 cattle blood samples used were positive for BLV infection. This study is considered firstreport of cattle EBL in the Philippines.

We demonstrated the using of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) of ribosomal DNA as a tool for identification of medically and veterinary important Muscidae flies in Thailand. A total of 27 fly samples were collected from various regions of Thailand. Six fly species in three subfamilies including Azeliinae (Hydrotaea spinigera), Muscinae (Musca domestica, M. sorbens) and Stomoxyinae (Stomoxys calcitrans, S. indicus and S. sitiens) were identified base on morphological taxonomy. PCR amplicons of the ITS2 gene of these flies varied between 312-377 bp with A+T content of 76.6%. ITS2 sequences of the flies in this study were 93-100% identity to …

A wild captured, male Monocellate cobra, Naja kaouthia of unknown age was observed with anorexia, imbalance of swimming and mild swelling in the distal fourth of the body. Physical examination revealed a palpable firm mass in the coelomic cavity, of which radiographic examination was suspicious as an obstruction of large intestine by a foreign body. Removal of the foreign body through its cloaca was attempted by enema and digital manipulation, but was not successful. Thereafter, an exploratory surgery was performed and revealed an abnormality in the left kidney that was compressing the large intestine. The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of intracellular glutamine status onamino acid transport system A in placental choriocarcinoma cells (BeWo). Intracellular glutamine was depleted byculturing the cells in regular medium without glutamine and by treating the cells for 16 hours with methioninesulfoximine (MSX), an inhibitor of glutamine synthetase. The pathological alterations in skin keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation in canine atopic dermatitis(CAD) were investigated in 20 small breed dogs with CAD (10 of which displayed lesional CAD skin and 10 nonlesionalCAD skin) and 11 healthy control animals. Biopsy of lesional CAD skin showed orthokeratotichyperkeratosis. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) of Ki-67, a cellular marker for proliferation, showed a higher epidermalcell proliferation rate in the CAD dogs (p< 0.05) which positively correlated with Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent andSeverity Index, CADESI-03 (p< 0.01). IHC labeling indicated reduced expression of cornified envelope proteins,involucrin (IVL) and filaggrin (FLG) in both lesional and non-lesional skin (p< 0.05). In contrast, expression oflympho-epithelial Kazal-type inhibitor (LEKTI), which has been reported to inhibit proteases that cleave proFLG intoFLG, was increased in lesional skin compared to the normal controls (p< 0.05). The IHC results showed a positivecorrelation between CADESI-03 and LEKTI expression and a negative correlation between CADESI-03 and IVLexpression. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates that epidermal hyperkeratosis in CAD is related todisturbance of both epidermal proliferation and cornified envelope differentiation. This is the first report of acorrelation of LEKTI with CAD.

Contamination of the environment with Nanosilver particles (AgNPs) has caused considerable concern. Atpresent there is little information of AgNPs toxicity, especially in aquatic environments. The purpose of this studywas to evaluate toxic effects of AgNPs on Zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryonic development. Toxicity test of AgNPs onthe embryos was conducted in concentration of 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 5 μg/ml. Standard water was used as control.Observation for mortality, morphological and functional abnormalities at 4, 24, 48 and 72 hours post fertilization (hpf)were performed. Stimulation Patterns For Erection And Ejaculation Using Electroejaculator In Black Marsh Turtles, Sakdichod Kimskulvech, Peerasak Suttiyotin

Semen collection by an electroejaculator was studied in black marsh turtles. High responses were recordedwhen electrical probe was inserted to the depth of 5.9±0.1 cm from the anus or 5.2±0.2 cm from posterior tip of thecarapace. The depth position was approximately the center of the second carapace from the rear. The intensity ofresponses increased with increasing voltage and reached a plateau at 7.0 volts. The depth of the probe inserted toyield highest responses had higher relationship with carapace length when measured against the anus (r= 0.81, p=0.0088) than the posterior end of carapace (r= 0.06, p= 0.8825). The safety of ethanolic extract from the seeds of Moringa oleifera was evaluated for its oral toxicity by acute toxicity test and subchronic toxicity study in experimental animals. The acute toxicity test in mice showed that the extract at doses ranging from 5.1 to 10.0 g/kg caused toxic signs and dose dependent mortality. Oral administration of the extract in rats at doses of 100, 500 and 1000 mg/kg/day for 90 consecutive days revealed that male rats treated with the extract at 1000 mg/kg had a significant decrease in RBC but this alteration was within rats reference range. This clinical case describes a three-year-old male raccoon (Procyon lotor), castrated, from La Lajita Oasis ParkZoological Park (Spain) which showed lack of appetite, state of mental depression and mild dehydration. Duringclinical examination an abscess was detected in the left ventrolateral area of the neck as well as clinical signscompatible with Horner’s Syndrome in the left eye. A hypersensitivity test was carried out by sympatheticinnervation with topical epinephrine 0.0001% and results suggested the presence of second-order Horner’s Syndromeformed by pressure from the abscess on the sympathetic innervation of the left eye. A 6-month-old, 7.2 kg, intact female mongrel stray dog wasreferred to the Veterinary Medical TeachingHospital, National Chung Hsing University with a chief complaint of alopecia, and severe pruritus. A skin swab wasobtained for bacterial culture, and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius was identified. The definitive diagnosis was caninesuperficial pyoderma. Specimen preservation is an essential factor in gross anatomical study of the brain and spinal cord. Forcedimpregnation of the specimen using polymer, or plastination, is to date one of the best specimen preparationprocedures. This study aimed to study the possibility of staining whole brain specimen using Sudan Red III dye priorto plastination. Dog brains were divided into 3 groups each stained with the dye for 1, 2 and 3 months, respectively.The stained specimens were then dissected to reveal the staining of deep structures before undergoing theplastination procedure. A beagle dog, aged 10 years old, was presented with anal relaxation. Chronic arthrosis of hip joints had beendiagnosed and treated on this dog’s first visit to the National Chung Hsing University Veterinary Medicine Teachinghospital. Except for unwillingness to walk on both hind limbs, pain on both hips and uncontrolled defecation due toanal relaxation, no other clinical signs were found during physical examination. Locomotion in mammals relies on a central pattern-generating circuitry of spinal interneurons established during development that coordinates limb movement. These networks produce left–right alternation of limbs as well as coordinated activation of flexor and extensor muscles. Here we show that a premature stop codon in the DMRT3 gene has a major effect on the pattern of locomotion in horses. The mutation is permissive for the ability to perform alternate gaits and has a favorable effect on harness racing performance. Two vaccinia virus (VACV) expression systems that contain elements from the lactose (lac) and the tetracycline (tet) operons of E. coli were developed to repress the expression of a reporter gene, enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), in the presence of tet operon inducers. In the first system, lac and tet operon elements were arranged in a gene circuit, and in the presence of increasing concentrations of a lac operon inducer (isopropyl-β-D-thiogalactoside, IPTG), EGFP expression increased in a dose dependent manner and at high IPTG concentrations, expression reached the same levels as a positive control virus.
