Raccoons (Procyon lotor) serve as a source of infection with various pathogens for people, most notably, rabies. Raccoons are specifically targeted for the control of rabies in the United States, primarily due to the 100% fatality rate in humans and animals. There is no cure or treatment for rabies and vaccines may be administered to people if it is administered promptly. In order to evaluate how successful trapping of raccoons is by using conventional methods, motion sensing cameras were placed on traps in order to captured raccoon behaviors. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus is a significant swine pathogen which exhibits considerable sequence diversity. In an attempt to identify highly conserved T-cell epitopes contained in proteins of this virus, we examined heptadecamer peptides spanning the sequence of the PRRSV nonstructural proteins 9, 10 and 11, all of them are highly conserved, for their ability to elicit a recall proliferative and interferon-gamma response in peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from pigs immunized against the type-II PRRSV strain FL-12. Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 (STEC O157) is one of the leading causes of hemolytic uremic syndrome in humans. Reducing the prevalence of STEC O157 in live cattle may reduce ground beef prevalence and subsequent human illness. Type III secreted protein vaccines (TTSP) reduce fecal shedding of STEC O157 in cattle. However, pre-harvest vaccines have yet to be adopted by the beef industry. Linoleic acid isomerase (LAI) is the enzyme that converts linoleic acid to conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) which appear to be capable of lowering cancer risk and enhancing immunity. There is an interest in developing commercial processes for the production of single isomers of CLA by biotransformation of LA using microbial cells and enzymes. However, the evaluation of these strains suggest that growth and LA isomerase production levels by these anaerobes are insufficient to support economic commercial production of single CLA isomers. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is one of the most devastating and costly diseases to the swine industry worldwide. Overall, the adaptive immune response to PRRS virus (PRRSV) is weak, which results in delayed elimination of virus from the host and inferior vaccine protection. PRRSV has been shown to induce a meager alpha interferon (IFN-α) response, and we hypothesized that elevated IFN-α levels early in infection would shorten the induction time and increase elements of the adaptive immune response. BACKGROUND: The objective of the study was to evaluate the gene expression of inflammatory cytokines (interleukin [IL]-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α, IL-1 receptor antagonist [ra] and serum amyloid A (SAA) in endometrial tissue and circulating leukocytes in response to uterine inoculation of 105 colony forming units (CFU) Escherichia coli in mares. Before inoculation, mares were classified as resistant or susceptible to persistent endometritis based on their uterine inflammatory response to infusion of 109 killed spermatozoa and histological assessment of the endometrial quality. The present invention relates, in general, to attenuated equine influenza viruses having an impaired ability to antagonize the cellular interferon (IFN) response, and the use of such attenuated viruses in vaccine and pharmaceutical formulations. In particular, the invention relates to attenuated equine influenza viruses having modifications to an equine NS1 gene that diminish or eliminate the ability of the NS1 gene product to antagonize the cellular IFN response. These viruses replicate in vivo, but demonstrate decreased replication, virulence and increased attenuation, and therefore are well suited for use in live virus vaccines, and pharmaceutical formulations.

The prevalence of preexisting immunity to adenoviruses in the majority of the human population might adversely impact the development of adaptive immune responses against adenovirus vector-based vaccines. To address this issue, we primed BALB/c mice either intranasally (i.n.) or intramuscularly (i.m.) with varying doses of wild type (WT) human adenovirus subtype 5 (HAd5). Following the development of immunity against HAd5, we immunized animals via the i.n. or i.m. route of inoculation with a HAd vector (HAd-HA-NP) expressing the hemagglutinin (HA) and nucleoprotein (NP) of A/Vietnam/1203/ 04 (H5N1) influenza virus. Causes Of Relinquishing The Dogs Adopted From Animal Shelters In Taiwan, Ying-Bin Fuh, Meng-Chih Tung, Kwong-Chung Tung, Jeng-Tung Chiang, Chang-Young Fei

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study investigated the causes of relinquishing the dogs adopted from animal shelters. The subjects were the adopters of public animal shelters in Taiwan in 2003~2005. Random sampling was conducted upon 10% of the population. This study collected data by telephone survey, and 1,185 calls were made, with 626 valid samples. According to this investigation, when being adopted, most of the animals were below one year old (71.7%; 449/626); among 626 dogs investigated, 229 were relinquished (36.6%; 229/626). They were mostly relinquished within half year after the adoption (45.4%; 104/229). The main cause of abandonment is “behavior” (31.9%; 73/229); “barking” …

In January 2010, we examined the prevalence of Salmonella in the rectal swab of 66 swine on 8 farms and in 25 pork products at 6 meat retailers of Sa Kaew province. Salmonella was isolated from 3%(2/66) of swine rectal swab samples and 96%(24/25) of pork samples. In rectal swab samples, both S. Weltevreden and S. Dumfries were isolated from one sample, and S. Streptococcal infection is a major problem in intensive tilapia farming. This study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial activity of mucilage, distilled water- and 70% methanol-crude extract from Butea superba Roxb. against Streptococcal bacteria. The antimicrobial activity using disc diffusion assay showed that B. superba Roxb. had a broad antimicrobial range against twelve isolates of streptococcal bacteria: Streptococcus iniae (n=2) and Streptococcus agalactiae (n=10). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the 70% methanol-crude extract varied between 128 and 512 µg/ml depending on the tested streptococcal strains. Three female mongrel dogs were cytologically diagnosed as transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) and had clinically developed resistance to vincristine treatment. One dog was treated with four treatments of 10,000 IU/m2 body surface area of L-asparaginase combined with 0.025 mg/kg body weight of vincristine sulfate every two weeks while this combination was administered to the others once a week for four weeks and only vincristine sulfate once a week for four treatments. Both treatments resulted in a complete remission. Side effects such as gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, depression, and decrease in appetite were observed in the dogs administered with the later protocol. …

This present study was carried out to use conventional and real-time PCR for detection and segregation of Brucella abortus and Brucella melitensis in aborted bovine, ovine, caprine, buffalo and camel fetuses. All samples were collected and immediately transferred to laboratory, genomic DNA was extracted and the conventional and real-time PCR by specific primers for Brucella abortus and Brucella melitensis was performed. A TaqMan analysis and single-step PCR was carried out in total 3710 DNA of abomasal contents of aborted fetuses. Bats are the reservoir hosts for several Paramyxoviruses including two serious zoonotic viruses, Hendra virus and Nipah virus which are responsible for fatal infections in animals and humans. These two viruses are sufficiently different from previously described Paramyxoviruses and are included in a new genus, Henipavirus. We report here a survey of cave-dwelling, insectivorous bats in Thailand for the presence of henipaviruses. Mosquito distribution and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection were studied in a bat cave and its surrounding area in Lopburi province, central Thailand. Mosquitoes were collected from May 2009 to April 2010 by using CO2-baited CDC-light traps, and dry ice as a source of CO2 to attract mosquitoes. Mosquitoes were identified and tested for JEV infection by using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). This study was designed to investigate the pathogenesis of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), a new variantgenotype and QX-like IBV, isolated in Thailand. Sixty, 28-day-old, female broiler chickens were divided into 3 groupsof 20 chickens each (groups 1-3) and sixty, 1-day-old, female broiler chickens were divided into 3 groups of 20chickens each (groups 4-6). Time of the first cleavage has been used as an indicator to determine developmental rate and quality of embryos in many species. The aim of this study was to examine effect of time of the first cleavage on cat embryo development and blastocyst quality. After in vitro fertilization, embryos were observed twice at 27 and 42 hours. The present study was designed to evaluate the protection induced by different vaccination programs against Thai QX-like infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). The chickens were divided into 5 groups, 16 chickens in each. Groups 1-4 were vaccinated with different regimes of vaccination program against IBV. Groups 5 did not receive IBV vaccine and served as a positive control group. Reproductive And Dairy Performances Of Thai Swamp Buffaloes Under Intensive Farm Management, Thuchadaporn Chaikhun, Ranchuan Hengtrakunsin, Fabio De Rensis, Mongkol Techakumphu, Siriwat Suadsong

In this study the reproductive and dairy performances of swamp buffaloes under intensive farm conditions were evaluated. The data of reproduction and milk production were collected from forty-eight swamp buffaloes during the period of 2001 to 2010. The reproductive and dairy performances were analyzed as mean±SD of each index. The age at first calving was 47.1±8 months and the gestation period was 321.4±11.3 days. The service per conception was 3.5±2.5, with insemination by both natural and artificial mating. The calving interval and the days open were 486.2±75.02 and 166.2±69.7 days (n=99), respectively. Growth and survival of juvenile brown shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus) in a closed recirculation seawater system at two salinities (33 and 38‰) were evaluated during 4 weeks in experimental tanks. Although the specific growth rate (SGR) was slightly higher at the treatment of 38‰ than at 33‰, no significant differences were detected for the different time intervals analyzed; however, the growth in terms of both body weight and total length was significantly faster at 38‰. The objective of the present investigation was to ascertain the prevalence of antibiotic resistance amongst E. coli strains obtained from broiler chicken in two different poultry farms against antibiotics that have a limited or no use in poultry and to advocate a probable mechanism of antibiotic resistance transfer between strains. A high resistance rate was seen against azteronam (100%), streptomycin (88-92%) followed by amoxicillin (68-76%), ceftrioxone (60-68%) and cefepime (56-68%). However reasonably lower levels of resistance were seen towards coamoxiclave (40%), ciprofloxacin (24-28%), and ofloxacin (36-40%). Meropenem emerged as least resistant (16-28%) antimicrobial agent. The vasovagal tonus index (VVTI) is a time-domain analysis method of heart rate variability acquired over a short period. It is a useful measurement for evaluating severity and prognosis heart failure in dogs. Behavior responses can be used to evaluate stress in each dog individually. Stress during clinical examination may interfere with the VVTI since it influences the sympathetic nervous system.
