The transfer of farming practices from low intensity farming systems for livestock production to commercial enterprises which employ intensive practices has resulted in the use of veterinary drugs becoming a critical component of food production. Resulting residues of veterinary drugs occurring in food of animal origin may give rise to potential health risks to consumers. The domestic cat (Felis catus) shows remarkable sensitivity to the adverse effects of phenolic drugs, including acetaminophen and aspirin, as well as structurally-related toxicants found in the diet and environment. This idiosyncrasy results from pseudogenization of the gene encoding UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A6, the major species-conserved phenol detoxification enzyme. Here, we established the phylogenetic timing of disruptive UGT1A6 mutations and explored the hypothesis that gene inactivation in cats was enabled by minimal exposure to plant-derived toxicants. Fixation of the UGT1A6 pseudogene was estimated to have occurred between 35 and 11 million years ago with all extant Felidae having dysfunctional …

Although emphasis in veterinary education is increasingly being placed on the ability to find, use, and communicate information, studies on the information behaviors of veterinary students or professionals are few. Improved knowledge in this area will provide valuable information for course and curriculum planning and the design of information resources. This article describes a survey of the information-seeking behaviors of first-semester veterinary students at Purdue University. A survey was administered as the first phase of a progressive semester-long assignment for a first semester DVM course in systemic mammalian physiology. Disruption of cerebellar granular neuronal precursor (GNP) maturation can result in defects in motor coordination and learning, or in medulloblastoma, the most common childhood brain tumor. The Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) pathway is important for GNP proliferation; however, the factors regulating the extent and timing of GNP proliferation, as well as GNP differentiation and migration are poorly understood. The p53 tumor suppressor has been shown to negatively regulate the activity of the Shh effector, Gli1, in neural stem cells; however, the contribution of p53 to the regulation of Shh signaling in GNPs during cerebellar development has not been determined. Variation in the size and overlap of space use by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) has broad implications for managing deer–human conflicts and disease spread and transmission in urban landscapes. Understanding which factors affect overlap of home range by various segments (i.e., age, sex) of an urban deer population has implications to direct contact between deer on disease epidemiology. We assessed size of home range and overlap of space use using the volume of intersection index (VI) for deer in an urban landscape by sex, age, season, and time of day. The study aims to investigate the efficacy of piroline and antibiotics in the treatment of bovine mastitiscaused by Streptococcus uberis (S. uberis) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) during dry-milk period. 1880 cows in dry-milkperiod were divided into 4 groups and treated with penicillin G, ammonia benzyl penicillin, ceftiofur and piroline,respectively. The efficacy of each medicine in treating mastitis caused by E. coli intramammary infection (E. coli IMI)was followed: 31.2% for penicillin G, 36.9% for ammonia benzyl penicillin, 61.3% for ceftiofur, and 64.4% for Piroline.For those caused by S. uberis intramammary infection (S. uberis IMI), the efficacy of ceftiofur was 90% …

In order to understand the change of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in dogs with mammary gland tumor (MGT), theactivity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in plasma samples, MGT tissues and near by normal mammary gland tissues wereevaluated by gelatin zymography. The levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were significantly higher in tumor tissues thanthose in normal gland tissues (p<0.05). Plasma MMP-9 levels in malignant cases were higher than those in benign(p=0.15) and non-tumor cases (p<0.05). Likewise, plasma MMP-2 levels in malignant MGT cases were higher thannon-tumor (p<0.01) and benign cases (p=0.54). Furthermore, plasma MMP-9 levels were reflected and positivelycorrelated with MMP-9 in tumor tissues (r=0.78, p=0.02), but not MMP-2. Our results indicated that the MMP-2 andMMP-9 levels are associated with tumor malignancy, and plasma MMP-9 activity can become a potential marker bothin follow-up and prognosis of canine MGT patients.

PURPOSE. Intracellular reactive oxygen species have been reported to associate with growth factor and integrin signalings in promoting cell adhesion in many cell types. This study is to explore if exogenous H2O2 at low levels can be beneficial to cell adhesion, migration, and wound healing.
METHODS. Primary rabbit corneal epithelial cells treated with 0–70 M H2O2 were tested for viability by MTT assay, adhesion by centrifugation assay, focal contacts of vinculin and F-actin by immunofluorescence, activated Src(pY416), EGF receptor (pY845), vinculin(pY1065), FAK(pY397), and FAK(pY576) by immunoblotting. Inner cell mass (ICM) is an important source of embryonic stem (ES) cells. There are several methods thathave been developed to increase the efficiency of ICM cell isolation as well as improve the ES cells derivation rate. Inconventional ICM isolation methods, the methods currently in use destroy trophectoderm cells of blastocyst stageembryos in order to release the ICM cell clumps. Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) spike (S) glyprotein and membrane (M) glycoprotein genes arebelieved to have genetic variation. The heterogeneity in those genomic sequences has been reported and is knownessentially for the diverse PEDV pathogenicity. Eight southern Vietnamese PEDVs collected from severe waterydiarrhea piglets of the recent emerging outbreaks (2009-2010) were sequenced and analyzed. The results revealedhigh nucleotide homology of the partial S gene of the current isolates at 98.9-100% and 99.7-100% identity of the fullM gene among these isolates despite dividing into two subclusters of different provincial origins. This study was performed to investigate histological structure, expressions of estrogen receptor beta (ERβ),androgen receptor (AR) and proliferation marker (Ki-67 protein) in scrotal and abdominal testicular tissues ofunilateral cryptorchidism prepubertal boars. Testicular tissues were obtained from 8 unilateral cryptorchidism boars.Immunohistochemical staining for ERβ, AR and Ki-67 protein was performed by avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex(ABC) method. The similar histological structure of both scrotal and abdominal testicular tissues was observed.Immunolocalization of Ki-67 was found in the nuclei of germ cells, interstitial cells and Sertoli cells of both scrotal andabdominal testicular tissues. High plasma IGF-I concentration has been found in large breed young dogs, but not in young cats. Theobjective of this study was to investigate the relation between the concentration of IGF-I and body weight in bothmale and female cats at young age. This study was to investigate the virulence and pathogenicity of Thai isolated Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG)inoculated into embryonated eggs and the chance of virulence study in embryonated eggs instead of experimentalchickens. One hundred and twenty eight-day-old embryonated eggs were divided into 4 groups as follows. Group 1consisting of 12 eggs served as sham negative control and was inoculated with 0.1 ml of broth into yolk sac. Ethanolic extracts from fruit pericarp of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) possess many biological andpharmacological activities. However, chronic toxicity study of ethanolic extract has never been investigated. Theobjective of this study was to evaluate the safety of 95% ethanolic extract from mangosteen pericarp in animal model.The oral administration of the extract was performed in 180 Wistar rats randomly allocated to six groups, each of15/sex. Group 1 was control group receiving distilled water. Group 2 to 6 were treatment groups receiving the extractat the doses of 10, 100, 500, 1000 and 1000 mg/kg/day for six months respectively. The present study was undertaken to determine the influence of sperm:oocyte ratio at fertilization in vitrousing frozen boar semen on fertilization rates and subsequent embryo development and quality in pig. Cumulusoocytecomplexes (COCs) were collected from porcine ovaries and then matured in vitro. After 44 hours of culture,matured oocytes were fertilized for 6 hours with three different sperm:oocyte ratios (1000:1, 2000:1, and 4000:1).Presumptive zygotes were fixed at 18-20 hours post-fertilization and then examined for sperm penetration andmonospermy rates. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells that have characteristics of self-renewal anddifferentiation into various specific cell types, in particular mesodermal lineages. This study aimed at isolating,identifying and examining the differentiation capability of canine MSCs. Bone marrow aspirates were obtained from4 dogs. Putative MSCs were then cultured in MSC medium and subpassaged. At the 3rd to 5th passages, MSCs wereexamined for their morphology and doubling time. Bartonella hensalae is a causative agent of cat scratch disease that has serious zoonotic potential for people.The aim of the present study is to examine seroprevalence of antibodies against B. hensalae in cats and dogs along thenorthern borders of Thailand in Chiangrai, Maehongson and Nan provinces using the indirect fluorescent antibodytest (IFA). A total of 169 serum samples derived from 56 cats and 113 dogs were collected from 3 provinces along thenorthern borders of Thailand. Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) culture in Mexico experiences sporadic and significant fish mortalities, wheredisease signs are associated with infectious pancreatic necrosis virus disease (IPNV). The purpose of the present workwas to support the potential of ELISA, histopathology, and RT-PCR as routine techniques for IPNV detection.Fourteen trout farms were monitored after a disease outbreak. Positive results were confirmed in different collectedorganisms from 21% of tested farms by all 3 techniques. Equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) infection remains a significant problem despite the widespread use of vaccines. The inability to generate a protective immune response to EHV-1 vaccination or infection is thought to be due to immunomodulatory properties of the virus, and the ORF1 and ORF2 gene products have been hypothesized as potential candidates with immunoregulatory properties. A pony infection study was performed to define immune responses to EHV-1, and to determine if an EHV-1 ORF1/2 deletion mutant (ΔORF1/2) would have different disease and immunoregulatory effects compared to wild type EHV-1 (WT).
