The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Chicken embryonic eggs and Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cell line were used for comparing the propagation of avian influenza A (H5N1) virus (C2105Dx1, a Thai isolate). The growth of the H5N1 virus was determined by using HA test and 50% infectivity dose to assess the suitability of the systems supporting the propagation of the virus. The results indicated that the Thai H5N1 virus was propagated better in the chicken embryonic eggs, which should be considered as a system of choice for the avian H5N1 virus isolation. Research on an innate immune system of penaeid shrimp is greatly motivated by economical requirements, because their culture is limited by the development of infectious diseases. As invertebrates, shrimp’s natural immunity acts as a fast and efficient defence mechanism against the pathogens. Their immune system involve hemocytes (for encapsulation, nodule formation and phagocytosis), several plasma components (antimicrobial peptides, histones, lysosomal enzymes, lipopolysaccharide, β-1,3-glucan binding proteins, and recognition molecules), and multimeric systems (clotting protein cascade, prophenoloxidase system). When these defense mechanisms fail to protect the shrimp against bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and their products, disease develops and a negative impact takes …

The aims of this study were to compare the efficacy of 2 kinds of antibiotics that are commonly used in the Thai broiler industry and to determine the optimal times of drug administration. One hundred and sixty, 21-day-old broilers were divided into eight groups. Prevalence Of Mycoplasma Bovis And Other Contagious Bovine Mastitis Pathogens In Bulk Tank Milk Of Dairy Cattle Herds In Khon Kaen Province, Thailand, Jaruwan Kampa, Varaporn Sukolapong, Arunee Buttasri, Apirom Charoenchai
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Mastitis is a most frequent and costly disease of dairy cattle worldwide. All three contagious mastitis pathogens, Mycoplasma bovis, Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus were investigated in 55 bulk tank milk samples from dairy cattle herds in Khon Kaen Province Thailand, by nested PCR and/or conventional bacterial culture. Bulk milk somatic cell count (BMSCC) was used as indicator for mastitis problem; i.e. > 5x105 somatic cells/ml of milk. The prevalence of Mycoplasma bovis, Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus were 1.8%, 21.8% and 7.3%, respectively. Results from BMSCC indicated mastitis problem in 47 herds. Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is a serious disease with animal health, public health, and international trade consequences. The cooperative Federal-State-industry effort to eradicate bovine TB from cattle in the United States has made significant progress since the program’s inception in 1917. However, the goal of eradication remains elusive.
This proposed action plan presents Veterinary Services’ (VS’) current thinking about changes we are considering for the TB program to address our current challenges.
This action plan will:

Abstract Glycoprotein 3 (GP3) is a highly glycosylated PRRSV envelope protein which has been reported as being present in the virions of PRRSV type I, while missing in the type II PRRSV (US) virions. We herein present evidence that GP3 is indeed incorporated in the virus particles of a North American strain of PRRSV (FL12), at a density that is consistent with the minor structural role assigned to GP3 in members of the Arterivirus genus. The present study aimed to examine the general morphology of Thai swamp buffalo’s oviducts by light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as the expression of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) and progesterone receptor isoform B (PRB) by immunohistochemical technique at the prepubertal stage. The samples composed of the uterotubal junction (UTJ), isthmus, ampulla and infundibulum of prepubertal Thai swamp buffalo oviducts (n=6) were collected from a local slaughterhouse. Field trial of a Chimeric porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) (Suvaxyn PCV2®, Fort Dodge Animal Health, USA) vaccine was performed in order to investigate the efficacy on decreasing pathological lesions and PCV2 viremia in a PCV2-affected swine herd in Thailand. A herd was selected based on history and serological data. Three-week-old pigs (n = 200) were equally divided into two groups. At 4 weeks old, the pigs (n = 100) were injected intramuscularly with 2 ml of Suvaxyn PCV2® vaccine and the non-vaccinated pigs were injected with 2 ml of normal saline. The nucleocapsid protein (N) of vesicular stomatitis virus and other rhabdoviruses plays a central role in the assembly and template functions of the viral N-RNA complex. The crystal structure of the viral N-RNA complex suggests that the central region of the N protein interacts with the viral RNA. Sequence alignment of rhabdovirus N proteins revealed several highly conserved regions, one of which spanned residues 282 to 291 (GLSSKSPYSS) in the central region of the molecule. Alanine-scanning mutagenesis of this region suggested that replacement of the tyrosine residue at position 289 (Y289) with alanine resulted in an N-RNA template that is …

This study investigated the effect of adding local earthworms (Pheretima peguana) into several configurations of the lab-scale constructed wetlands reactors receiving swine wastewater in terms of their treatment performances, namely a decrease in organic matter, TKN, and solids. The results indicated that the performance of the lab-scale units with earthworms was better in the presence of earthworms. In terms of optimal configuration, the vertical subsurface-flow constructed wetlands with earthworms, sequentially followed by horizontal subsurface-flow constructed wetlands had generally the best treatment performance. Tissue reaction to a 316L stainless T plate fabricated for pelvic osteotomy was examined radiographically and histologically in 3 experimental mongrel dogs 52 weeks after plate implantation on the non-osteotomized ilium. The adverse effects of long-term plate implantation were assessed clinically and radiographically in 7 dysplatic hips of 5 dogs that had undergone triple pelvic osteotomy 3-5 years earlier. The plates were removed from the experimental dogs for corrosion evaluation 52 weeks after the implantation. The aim of this study was to investigate the freezability of Thai native crossbred (T) and purebred horse (F) sperm using different extenders. Semen samples were collected monthly from five T and four F stallions between 5 and 12 years of age. The extenders used were INRA-Y (E1), INRA-Y supplemented with 50 mM L-glutamine (E2), lactose-EDTA (E3) and lactose-EDTA supplemented with 50 mM L-glutamine (E4). One hundred and thirty two, one day old broiler chickens were divided into 4 groups. Group 1 (1 day old) was subcutaneously vaccinated with immune complex vaccine into the nape of the neck. Group 2 and 3 (14 days old) were vaccinated with different commercial products, intermediate-plus strains of live attenuated infectious bursal disease (IBD) vaccine I and II, respectively, via the oral route. Canine amniotic membrane (AM) transplantation in conjunction with a third eyelid flap was used to promote healing of created deep corneal ulcers in 6 normal mongrel dogs. The healing was compared with the healing of created ulcers in the other eye of the same dog that were treated only with the third eyelid flap. A minimum of 60 days interval was allowed between the two treatment procedures in the 2 eyes of each dog. The aims of this study were to investigate the meiotic competence of immature porcine oocytes following open pulled straw (OPS) vitrification and warming and also to test the efficiency of the pretreatment of immature oocytes with CB prior to OPS vitrification. Experiment 1, cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs) were randomly assigned to OPS vitrification, cryoprotectant (CPA) toxicity test and non-CPA/non-vitrified controls. A selective trans-packaging system was developed to produce and isolate bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) pseudo-particles with complementing reporter replicons and their packaging proteins expressed in trans with recombinant vaccinia virus. The encapsidation of replicon rNS3-5B was dependent not only on the in trans expression of structural proteins C, Erns, E1 and E2, but also the nonstructural proteins, p7 and contiguous precursor NS2-3-4A. Nonstructural p7, NS4B, NS5A or NS5B could be expressed in cis and in trans with precursor NS2-3-4A without significantly affecting virion assembly efficiency. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a contagious, fatal prion disease of deer and elk that continues to emerge in new locations. To explore the means by which prions are transmitted with high efficiency among cervids, we examined prion infectivity in the apical skin layer covering the growing antler (antler velvet) by using CWD-susceptible transgenic mice and protein misfolding cyclic amplification. Our finding of prions in antler velvet of CWD-affected elk suggests that this tissue may play a role in disease transmission among cervids. Humans who consume antler velvet as a nutritional supplement are at risk for exposure to prions. The …

The present invention provides novel isolated nucleic acids encoding antigenic proteins derived fromSarcocystis neurona, or unique fragments thereof. In particular, the invention provides novel isolated nucleic acids encoding membrane-associated polypeptides SnSAG2, SnSAG3, and SnSAG 4. Also provided are purified antigenic polypeptide fragments encoded by the novel nucleic acid sequences set forth herein that encode for SnSAG2, SnSAG3, and SnSAG 4. Also provided are isolated nucleic acids capable of selectively hybridizing with the nucleic acid from Sarcocystis neurona.
