A 3-year-old East Friesian sheep from a sheep flock that suffered from chronic copper poisoning was forwarded to the Clinic of Farm Animals in the Aristotle University. The animal had signs of a hemolytic disease indicative of chronic copper poisoning and also nervous signs. Laboratory examinations were consistent with chronic copper poisoning. This was confirmed after necropsy and liver toxicological analysis. By blood smear examination, metarubricytosis, basophilic stippling, anisocytosis, and polychromasia were found. Also, brain histopathological examination revealed focal areas of gliosis in the cerebral cortex and white matter areas. A cross sectional study on Eimeria and Cryptosporidium infections in small ruminants at ELFORA export abattoir was conducted from October 2005 to February 2006. In this study, attempts were made to determine the prevalence and intensity of Eimeria and Cryptosporidium infections in sheep and goats. Moreover, potential risk factors associated with the infections and the species of Eimeria and Cryptosporidium incriminated in the infections were identified. A total of 384 fecal samples were collected and examined by flotation technique using Sheather's sugar solution to detect the oocysts of Eimeria and Cryptosporiudium species. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of 3 chemical agents used sequentially and electrical stimuli on parthenogenetic activation of in vitro matured bovine oocytes and comparison with a standard IVF protocol for embryo developmental rates. For this purpose, oocytes were matured in tissue culture medium-199 (TCM-199) at 39 °C and 5% of CO_2 in humidified air. For IVF, matured oocytes were fertilized in Modified Tyrode-Lactate Medium. A study was conducted to compare the clinical effects of xylazine, ketamine, and a cocktail of them in pigeons (Columbia livia). For this study 15 adult and healthy pigeons were divided into 3 equal groups: A - xylazine (16 mg/kg), B - ketamine (60 mg/kg) and C - xylazine-ketamine cocktail (8 mg/kg + 30 mg/kg, respectively). Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is an oncogenic retrovirus that infects cattle. It is classified in the human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV) group, although BLV mainly infects B cells rather than T cells. Most BLV-infected cattle remain asymptomatic, but about 30% develop persistent lymphocytosis, and perhaps 5% eventually acquire B-cell lymphoma. Mainly as a result of the latter condition, BLV is a significant economic problem for cattle producers worldwide. Moreover, because of the close genetic similarities between the two viruses, BLV may also be a useful model for investigating HTLV-associated diseases in humans. Current vaccines are only partially effective against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus infection because they elicit a weak immune response that is not fully protective. PRRS is the most economically significant disease facing the swine industry today, costing U.S. pork producers at least $560 million annually. Despite substantial research efforts the exact components of a protective anti-PRRSV immune response are still not known, thus we are testing alternate approaches to evaluate immunity and genetic resistance to PRRSV. Background: We analyzed the claim "mammography saves lives" by calculating the life-saving absolute benefit of screening mammography in reducing breast cancer mortality in women ages 40 to 65.
Methods: To calculate the absolute benefit, we first estimated the screen-free absolute death risk from breast cancer by adjusting the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Program 15-year cumulative breast cancer mortality to account for the separate effects of screening mammography and improved therapy. D-alanine is a structural component of mycobacterial peptidoglycan. The primary route of d-alanine biosynthesis in eubacteria is the enantiomeric conversion from l-alanine, a reaction catalyzed by d-alanine racemase (Alr). Mycobacterium smegmatis alr insertion mutants are not dependent on d-alanine for growth and display a metabolic pattern consistent with an alternative pathway for d-alanine biosynthesis. In this study, we demonstrate that the M. smegmatis alr insertion mutant TAM23 can synthesize d-alanine at lower levels than the parental strain. The insertional inactivation of the alr gene also decreases the intracellular survival of mutant strains within primary human monocyte-derived macrophages. By complementation studies, …

Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) infected cell protein 0 (bICP0) is an important transcriptional regulatory protein that stimulates productive infection. In transient transfection assays, bICP0 also inhibits interferon dependent transcription. bICP0 can induce degradation of interferon stimulatory factor 3 (IRF3), a cellular transcription factor that is crucial for activating beta interferon (IFN-β) promoter activity. Recent studies also concluded that interactions between bICP0 and IRF7 inhibit trans-activation of IFN-β promoter activity. The aim of this study was to identify the presence and prevalence of bovine tuberculosis in the eastern Anatolian border province of Van and its villages and to collect the preliminary data required for programs for the prevention and control of this zoonotic disease. Investigations regarding renal clearance and urinary excretion of ciprofloxacin were carried out in buffaloes, cows, sheep, and goats. The drug was administered intramuscularly at a dose of 5 mg/kg body weight. The plasma and urine concentrations of the drug were determined with HPLC. Renal clearance of endogenous creatinine was used as an index of glomerular filtration rate (GFR). In buffaloes, it was 0.72 ± 0.15 (mean ± SE), in cows 0.36 ± 0.09, in sheep 1.33 ± 0.35, and in goats 1.87 ± 0.38 mL/min/kg. The possible role of Brucella spp. in 65 abortion cases, 55 from sheep and 10 from goats, occurring in the birth seasons of 2004 and 2005 in northwestern Turkey was investigated. Colony morphology, agglutination by acriflavin, H2S production, CO2 requirement, dye sensitivity in thionin, basic fuchsin, growth characteristics in streptomycin, lysis with Tbilisi phage, and agglutination with monospecific A- and M antisera were examined for identification and biotyping. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of phosalone on the tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus. The effect was assessed on the basis of the results of acute toxicity tests and comparison of results of haematological examination of a control and an experimental group exposed to phosalone. The 96 h LC_{50} is the basic value in the acute toxicity test and it was 0.26 mg/L for phosalone against the test fish. Molecular changes associated with adaptation of human influenza A virus in embryonated chicken eggs are reported: 4 amino acid substitutions occurred in HA (G186V, S219F, V226I, V309I). These substitutions allowed binding to SAalpha2,3Gal- and SAalpha2,6Gal-containing receptors, conferred SAalpha2,3Gal specificity, and preserved antigenicity. Here, the author reports the result of protein secondary structure predictions of the adaption from its primary sequence using the NNPREDICT server. Comparing the classical HA of H3N2, the adaptation has additional helices and strands and these identified structural changes should be the explanation for the reported binding and antigenicity changes.

The efficacy of 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PhOH) as an anaesthetic for the musky octopus, Eledone moschata (Lamarck, 1799), was examined. The prevalence, intensity, and pathology of a Myxobolus sp. affecting the kidneys of cultured Diplodus puntazzo C. during the period 2003-2005 are described. The study included data collected from the largest farm in southern Greece where a high rate of mortality due to myxosporean infection occurred. Sharp snout seabream reared in sea cages in southern Greece underwent microbiological, parasitological, and histological examinations, while measurement and identification of parasites was performed immediately after sampling. The present study provides the results from a comparative study of the 3 commonly used methods for total protein (TP) measurement. The experiments were carried out with 6 dogs (4-7 year-old, weighing 12.8 ± 1.4 kg). A 1-year-old male Dalmatian dog with urinary obstruction was examined on an emergency basis. The macroscopic urine examination, direct radiography, positive contrast cystography, and ultrasonography revealed urolithiasis. Histology of the vesica urinaria showed urolith particles deeply embedded in a membrane on the mucosa. This is not commonly seen in dogs with urolithiasis.

An outbreak of industrial chronic copper poisoning in Iranian fat-tailed sheep in a region of southeast Iran is described. At least 10,000 out of 75,000 sheep (13.3%) originating from 50 flocks died over a period of 3 years in the Khatoon Abad region in Kerman province, Iran. The diagnosis was based on epidemiological, clinical, hematological, serum biochemical, urinalysis, necropsy and histopathological evaluations. Then findings were confirmed by toxicological analysis of liver and kidney samples. The details of epidemiological, clinical, laboratory and pathologic findings are described in the manuscript. For this purpose, anti-S100 whole molecule polyclonal antibody and anti-S100 \alpha and anti-S100 \beta monoclonal antibodies were used on paraffin sections collected from the cecum, ileum, colon, rectum, and bursa of Fabricius of chicks experimentally infected with E. tenella. A total of 181 Jersey cows were used to investigate how leptin gene polymorphisms affect milk production traits such as milk yield, fat and protein yield, and fat and protein content. A 7-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was presented because of post-prandial regurgitation, gasping shortly after eating, weight loss, dyspnea, and tachypnea. Six months prior to the onset of these signs the cat had received nutritional support via gastrostomy and then nasogastric tubes. A diagnosis of esophageal diverticulum was made on the basis of clinical features, contrast esophagram, and endoscopy, and was considered a complication of tube feeding. Medical therapy, including parenteral fluids, ranitidine, metoclopramide, and cisapride, and a soft, bland low-fat diet resulted in improvement in the clinical signs within 1 week. The study was designed to determine the health status of neonatal calves on dairy farms in Kars district. It involved retrospective questioning (2001 calving season) and prospective follow up (2002 calving season).
