Detection Of Mycoplasma Hyopneumoniae In Pigs In Turkey, Arzu Funda Bağcigi̇l, Serkan İki̇z, N. Yakut Özgür

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is the primary agent of enzootic pneumonia in pigs. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of M. hyopneumoniae in pigs raised in Turkey. Samples were obtained from the lungs of 286 pigs, which had already been separated from the carcasses at slaughter. Lung tissues were homogenized in 5 ml of Friis medium, the suspensions were inoculated into Friis medium, and then incubated at 37 °C until they developed an acid color change or for 21 days. Cultures were identified by M. hyopneumoniae-specific PCR. M. hyopneumoniae was recovered from 2 (0.70%) of the 286 lung …

Lung, trachea, and serum samples obtained from turkeys showing clinical signs of respiratory disease were examined for the presence of Bordetella avium infection (bordetellosis) using culture, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The material of this study consisted of 2 live turkeys at the age of 24 weeks with respiratory distress, nasal discharge, and cough that had been brought to the Microbiology Laboratory of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Adnan Menderes University. The results of the study show that B. avium, the causative agent of bordetellosis, was not isolated from either the lung or trachea, while both …

A Survey On Helminth Infections Of Equines In The Central Black Sea Region, Turkey, Şi̇nasi̇ Umur, Mustafa Açici

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of helminth species in horses, donkeys, and mules in the Central Black Sea region, between March 2004 and July 2005. For this purpose, 140 faecal samples were taken from horses (n = 83), donkeys (n = 31), and mules (n = 26) in Samsun, Sinop, Ordu, Amasya, and Tokat provinces. Infection rates were 91.57% (76 of 83) in horses, 96.77% (30 of 31) in donkeys, and 96.15% (25 of 26) in mules. The parasite species and their prevalence in examined animals were as follows: in horses Strongylidae spp. 77.10%, Parascaris equorum …
