In Vitro And In Vivo Effects Of Serine And Threonine On Follicle Growth, Differentiation And Atresia, Hüseyi̇n Baki̇ Çi̇ftçi̇

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This work was designed to test the effect of serine and threonine on follicle growth, differentiation and atresia under in vitro and in vivo conditions. Two experiments were conducted. In the first experiment, follicles 90-120 µm in diameter, from 21-day old mice, were dissected mechanically and cultured individually for 7 days. Follicles were subjected to 4 different treatments. Follicles in medium without amino acids and gonadotrophins were assigned as control groups. Follicles in medium with PMSG and without amino acids constituted a positive control whereas the other treatments were test groups. Every 24 h follicle diameters were measured and the …

This study was conducted during the Engraulis encrasicolus fishing seasons of 1998-1999 and 1999-2000, and some basic characteristics of this population off the Turkish coast of the Black Sea were examined. Weight-length relationships and von Bertalanffy growth equations were estimated as W = 0.0083 L^{2.872} and Lt = 15.66[1 – e^{-0.3368 (t+2.526)}] and W = 0.0076 L^ {2.919} and L t = 17.07 [1 – e^{–0.2836 (t+2.1047)}] for the 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 fishing seasons, respectively. For the 1998-1999 fishing season total (Z), natural (M), and fishing (F) mortality rates were Z = 1.44 year^{-1}, M = 0.49 year^{-1} and F …

This study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of bone injection gun assisted intraosseous administration of contrast media as an alternative to the intravenous route for urography. Intravenous urographies were obtained in 6 rabbits. Urographic examinations by the intraosseous route were performed in the same animals 48 h later. After adequate anesthesia, the retroauricular vein was punctured for intravenous injection and a bone injection gun was used for intraosseous injections to the distal one-third of the rabbit femur. Direct radiographies of rabbits were obtained following 1200 mg/kg body weight iomeprol (300 mg iodine/ml) administration by both the intravenous and intraosseous …

The Treatment Of Experimental Acute Ethylene Glycol (Antifreeze) Toxication Using 4-Methyl Pyrazol And Ethanol In Dogs, Vehbi̇ Güneş, Çeti̇nkaya Şendi̇l

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effects of ethanol and 4-methyl pyrazole were investigated in the treatment of 30 dogs toxicated with antifreeze (AF). The AF toxication produced significant increases in blood urea, creatinin and potassium and a decrease in blood calcium levels. Calcium-oxalate monohydrate, which is pathognomic for AF toxication, was consistently seen in urine sediment. Ethanol was rarely effective on the multisystemic effects that occurred in dogs or ADH inhibition. CNS findings were also observed after ethanol administration. The results indicated that 4-MP treatment provided earlier and safer healing than ethanol. It was deduced that 4-MP + NaHCO_3 was more effective than ethanol …

In this study, 3484 milk yield records (1520 first, 1206 second and 758 third lactations) obtained from 1816 cows born between 1990 and 1997 in the Holstein-Friesian herd of Ceylanpınar State Farm were used to estimate the heritabilities, and genetic and phenotypic correlations between lactation milk yields using an individual animal model and the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method. In the model studied, 305-day milk yields were used and individual animal effects were assumed to be a random effect, calving year and calving months were fixed effects, and calving age (as months) was a covariate, and all of these factors …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A data set containing 2-year test day milk yield records was used. Random regression model solutions established with a covariance function (CF) approach was used. Persistence and lactation curve explanation performances of polynomial, Wilmink and Ali-Schaeffer curve definitions were compared for CF. When comparisons were made for R2 values, polynomial (0.9835) definition headed the list, followed by the Ali-Schaeffer curve (0.9534), and Wilmink curve (0.6023) definitions. Among the persistence predictions in respect of lactation orders, the Ali-Schaeffer curve provided predictions with the minimum variance, followed by the Wilmink and polynomial curve approaches. All of the curve definitions were in accord …

Thirty-four Streptococcus thermophilus strains were isolated from yogurt samples obtained from various villages in different regions of Turkey. These strains were examined for their antibiotic resistance patterns and plasmid carriage. The susceptibility of the isolates to 8 antibiotics (vancomycin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, cephalothin, ampicillin-sulbactam, gentamicin and penicillin G) was determined by the disk diffusion method. Most strains of S. thermophilus were resistant to gentamicin (79%) and penicillin G (64%) and susceptible to chloramphenicol (94%) and tetracycline (88%). In plasmid DNA analyses, it was determined that 7 strains did not contain any plasmid DNA, while other strains included plasmid DNA ranging …
