The data for this cross-sectional retrospective study are from surveys of 65 dairy-cattle herds in central New York, USA sampled between February, 1993 and March, 1995. The objective was to identify probability distributions of logarithmically transformed somatic-cell counts (linear score) for use in a simulation model of mastitis and milk quality. Probability density functions were estimated using maximum-likelihood estimators for the linear score of individual-cow composite milk samples culture negative and culture positive for the pathogens Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus non-agalactiae, Staphylococcus aureus, and coagulase-negative staphylococci for the complete dataset and by bulk-tank somatic-cell count group (< 500 000, ≥ 500 000 SCC/ml). Based on the rankings of three goodness-of-fit tests (Anderson-Darling, Kolmogorov-Smirnov and x2 …

A comparative study of the Rose Bengal test (RBT), Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and complement fixation test (CFT) was performed to analyze sera of two Awassi flocks. Flock A was composed of 215 ewes, naturally infected with brucellosis. None of the animals were vaccinated. Flock B consisted of 336 non-infected non-vaccinated ewes. These served as nega-tive controls. The two flocks were each divided into 4 groups, and samples were collected from one group every 6 months and subjected to bacteriologic and serologic testing. Samples from any aborted ewes were also collected immediately after abortion and 6 weeks later. During the …

In order to provide uniqe insight into the metabolic disturbences seen after calving cholesterol, triglycerid, high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein, very low density lipoprotein, glucose and insulin levels in serum were studied before calving (group I), in aerly (group II) and late (group III) lactation in 24 normal cows. Serum lipoproteins were separeted into various density classes by repeated ultracentrifugation. The results indicate that there was a rise in glucose, tryglycerid and very low density lipoprotein levels before calving, and in choles-terol and high density lipoprotein levels late lactation, and the dairy cows were inclined fatty liver because of …

The Ultra Structure Of Abnormal Objects In The Semen Of Two Bulls, Hasan Hakan Bozkurt
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In the semen of the two bulls, abnormal structures, which were not identified with phase-contrast and dark-field microscopy, were observed. These samples were fixed, embedded in the plastic blocks and sectioned for examining with T.E.M. It was understood that the objects in the first sample were abnormal spermatozoa which have both head and tail anomalies. The objects in the second sample were not abnormal spermatozoa. They were leukocytes which infiltrated into the semen.
