Deconstruction Of Body Representation Of The Back In Healthy Back Pain-Free Individuals And People With Chronic Low Back Pain, Simon Pratt

Theses

Changes in various body representations have been increasingly investigated and subsequently posited to be potentially important factors in the development and maintenance of chronic low back pain. Three main domains of body representation are considered here: body model, body schema (comprising superficial and postural schema), and body image. Most studies informing our contemporary understanding of these body representations have been undertaken in areas such as the hand and forearm, with a comparative dearth of studies performed on the low back. Consequently, this thesis consists of a comprehensive investigation of body representation initially in healthy back pain-free individuals and then in …

In Vivo Human Medial Gastrocnemius Fascicle Behaviour And Belly Gear During Submaximal Eccentric Contractions Are Not Affected By Concentric Fatiguing Exercise, Matheus Daros Pinto, Kazunori Nosaka, Anthony J. Blazevich

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Changes in muscle geometry and belly gearing during eccentric contractions influence fibre strain and susceptibility to muscle damage. They are modulated by the interaction between connective tissues and intracellular-intrafascicular fluid pressures and external pressures from neighbouring structures. Fatiguing exercise triggers fluid shifts (muscle swelling) and muscle activation changes that may influence these modulators. Our purpose was to measure medial gastrocnemius (MG) geometric changes in vivo during eccentric contractions before and after maximal concentric muscle work to test the hypothesis that fatigue would reduce fascicle rotation and muscle gear and provoke greater fascicle strain. Submaximal eccentric plantar flexor contractions at 40% …

The Effects Of Static Versus Dynamic Stretching On Lower Extremity Power Output And Flexibility In Dancers, Meloney George Jan 2024

The Effects Of Static Versus Dynamic Stretching On Lower Extremity Power Output And Flexibility In Dancers, Meloney George

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Collegiate dancers require a large range of motion throughout all joints for performance success. Previous research has shown static (STA) stretching to be most effective at improving flexibility (Chaabene et al. 2019), due to this factor, warmups for dance are primarily based on STA stretching to allow dancers to reach their maximum flexibility. Previous research has also shown that STA stretching before activity can have negative effects on an athlete’s power output, and a large amount of power is essential for dance. PURPOSE: Determine the effect of STA and dynamic (DYN) stretching on lower extremity power and flexibility in collegiate …
