BACKGROUND: Differences in responding to sensory stimuli, including sensory hyperreactivity (HYPER), hyporeactivity (HYPO), and sensory seeking (SEEK) have been observed in autistic individuals across sensory modalities, but few studies have examined the structure of these "supra-modal" traits in the autistic population.

METHODS: Leveraging a combined sample of 3868 autistic youth drawn from 12 distinct data sources (ages 3-18 years and representing the full range of cognitive ability), the current study used modern psychometric and meta-analytic techniques to interrogate the latent structure and correlates of caregiver-reported HYPER, HYPO, and SEEK within and across sensory modalities. Counseling supervisors have an ethical responsibility to be gatekeepers to the profession and to protect the public from harm. When a Licensed Professional Counselor – Supervisor (LPC-S) in Louisiana is not also the Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor’s (PLPC) on-site supervisor, insight regarding the PLPC’s behaviors may be lacking and therefore decreases the ability of the LPC-S to identify potential remediation areas. The author presents a method to help supervision only LPC-Ss ensure their gatekeeping responsibilities through consented communications with on-site administrative supervisors.

Reflective supervision is a protected time and space for a counselor to consider his or her work from multiple perspectives with a trusted mental health professional (Shahmoon-Shanok, 2009). The authors present reflective supervision as an important component of on-going counselor practice that is separate from clinical supervision provided during counselor training. Theories of clinical and reflective supervision are discussed as they relate to the development of reflective practice for counselors. In today's culture obesity is becoming an epidemic for individuals of all ages. Research shows that obese adolescents have higher risks of being the victims and perpetrators of bullying in a school setting. School counselors should focus on this specialized population as a way to create prevention and intervention strategies. This paper reviews current literature demonstrating obese adolescents as a marginalized population, and how school counselors can utilize cognitive-behavioral therapy in working with obese adolescents.

This paper will provide a summary of the available literature on the supervisory triad and multicultural supervision. Topics identified will include the triadic supervisory relationship; the goal of multicultural supervision; and the potential benefits and drawbacks of supervisory models. The authors will also present a model of supervision, the Multicultural Triadic Network (MTN) model, to address the direct and indirect relationship network between supervisor, counselor, and client. A discussion will be provided of how multicultural competence flows within this triadic system. Finally, the authors recommend some strategies for implementing the MTN.

As new issues arise that change legislation, the counseling profession must translate these ethical concerns into new practices. As the use of psychotropic medications to treat mental illness increases across the lifespan, the need for psychopharmacology training for counselors intensifies. Research by Sepulveda (2011) concluded that counselor educators are not overwhelmingly supportive of including a psychopharmacology course in CACREP–approved school counselor curricula. Expanding on Sepulveda’s (2011) work, our findings indicate that most CACREP-approved counseling programs do not offer psychological or psychopharmacology courses. Most program directors favor such courses in their programs, and agree that licensed counselors are routinely confronted with medication issues in professional settings. In this study, a single qualitative case study to examine the transformations that occurred in a participant who has engaged in the Diamond Dallas Page (DDP) yoga system for 6 years was utilized. DDP yoga is the workout created by 3 time WCW champion Diamond Dallas Page. Two in depth open-ended interviews were conducted with the participant. The first interview was conducted to gather raw data, and the second interview was conducted to validate the data. This paper will provide a summary of the available literature on supervisor training; specifically supervisor training models, programs, and curricula. The authors will also discuss the Multicultural Triadic Network (MTN) model, drawing attention to the added layer of complexity that the supervision-of-supervision (SOS) element contributes. A case scenario will be provided to illustrate how the SOS network flows within the supervisory relationship. Finally, the authors will present specific implications of considering the cultural dynamics of each member of the SOS network in the MTN model.

Traumatized students often struggle to meet the academic and behavioral expectations of schools. Interpersonal trauma in particular can damage children’s capacities for healthy social relationships and participation in community. In this article, I explore some of the detrimental effects of interpersonal trauma on students. I then offer relational-cultural theory as a lens for conceptualizing how interpersonal trauma affects children’s relational skills and for promoting mutually empathetic relationships that foster healing. Finally, I recommend strategies for school counselors to cultivate trauma-responsive school environments by working directly with traumatized students, advocating for safe and inclusive school cultures, and training educators in skills …

Service learning has theoretical and empirical support as a pedagogy that can address the need to infuse social justice advocacy into the counselor education curriculum. Unfortunately, it is not widely utilized and there is a dearth of data shedding light on why this is. This study sought to address this by investigating how faculty level factors impact the use of service learning. The data indicates that faculty perception of the importance of professional roles, perceived teaching efficacy, and epistemic beliefs significantly predict the use of service learning. The data further indicates that faculty level factors predict attitudes towards service learning. …

The purpose of this study was to explore hegemonic masculinity, an expression of the male identity whereby value is placed on attitudes and behaviors which may be destructive, and Multicultural Competence (MCC) in male counselors. Data were collected using the Multicultural Counseling Knowledge and Awareness Scale (MCKAS; Ponterotto, et al., 2002) and the Male Norm Roles Inventory (MRNI-SF; Levant, Hall, & Rankin, 2013). Hierarchical Linear Regression (HLR) and correlational analyses were used. Results support that hegemonic masculine attitudes are negatively related to MCC, and sexual identity is related to hegemonic masculine attitudes and MCC.
