PTSD is a prevalent and significant disorder that affects the lives of many youth. Targeted interventions should address both the symptoms of PTSD as well as the precursory events that lead to the diagnosis. Counselors should be aware of the many possible sources of traumatizing events such as threats of death, sexual abuse, severe neglect, and environmental factors (e.g., hurricanes/tornadoes). This article informs counselors of the prevalence of PTSD, treatment options and characteristics of PTSD in children and teens.

(2011) Batterer Intervention Programs: The Relationship Between Session Completions And The Batterer’S Perception Of The Abusive Relationship, John P. Muldoon

The purpose of this study is to investigate the male batterer’s perception of his relationship with his partner and the impact the relationship has on session attendance and program completion in a batterer intervention program. The study investigated 198 male participants enrolled in a batterer intervention program in the southeastern United States. The findings suggest a complex interaction among the three variables of (1) the participant’s perception of the referral incident, (2) the batterer’s emotional commitment to the victim, and (3) the total number of sessions completed in a batterer intervention program. For more than 20 years the number of grandparents who have taken over the role of the primary custodial caregiver of their grandchildren has steadily increased. There has been burgeoning investigation and interest into this phenomenon that affects the largest segment of the U.S. population, the baby boom generation, as well as older adults. This report provides an overview of the most critical issues that have been covered in the literature and identifies some of the challenges for counselors who work with both the grandparents and the children. (2011) College Students’ Perceptions Of The Mental Health Needs For Fellow Students Returning From Iraq And Afghanistan: Implications For Collegecounselors, Theodore S. Smith, Danielle M. Mcclendon, Kristy D. Fusilier

Louisiana Journal of Counseling

After participating in a series of lectures on military service and mental health, 115 college students wrote an essay addressing their perception of the mental health needs for fellow students following deployment. A content analysis of the students’ essays was completed, as the foundation for the present study. Information was obtained from the content analysis regarding the number of cohorts returning, psychological overlay, factors contributing to continued counseling after a first visit, and best provider of counseling services. Results are applied to the provision of counseling services in collegesettings.

Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) has been growing in research over the past few years. Studies have indicated that CPRT is an effective approach to enhancing the child-parent relationship (Landreth & Bratton, 2006; Edwards, Sullivan, Meany-Walen, Kantor, 2010; Sheely-Moore & Ceballos, 2011). CPRT encourages parents to strengthen and enhance their relationships with their child(ren) based on the development of increased levels of empathy and acceptance. This review will attempt to shed light upon the historical evolution of the Louisiana Journal of Counseling (LJC) by conducting a qualitative analysis of its published articles for the years 1999, 2001-2004, and 2006-2011. In order to conduct this analysis, we noted major author trends including: gender, professional title, and regional affiliation. In addition, we also highlighted five major subject areas that have emerged over the years, including: counselor identity, professional issues, counselor education and supervision, research and counseling techniques, and multiculturalism. From this analysis, we predicted possible future directions for this journal and highlighted some of the major findings.

Internal Working Models (IWMs) (Bowlby, 1988) provide a viable framework for conceptualizing supervisees’ development within the counselor supervision process. IWMs are the intrapersonal schematic for an individual’s interpersonal relations and significantly influence a supervisee’s interactional dynamics, development, and wellness within the context of both the therapeutic and supervisory relationships. Additionally, IWMs may be utilized within counseling supervision as a strategy to explore a supervisee’s theoretical orientation, case conceptualization, and the transference of theory to practice. This article introduces a supervision strategy grounded in IWMs to support supervisees’ development and offers a case illustration of the tool.

(2012) Group Physical Exercise, Relationship Dynamics, And Curative Factors: Qualitative Findings From A Kinesiology Exercise Immunology Course, Laura Fazio-Griffith, Jennifer R. Curry

Qualitative inquiry was used to examine students’ perceptions of, and experiences in, a Kinesiology Exercise Immunology Course with an experiential marathon training component. Twenty-eight students participated in four focus groups. Data was analyzed according to the themes and patterns that emerged during each focus group. Major themes revealed the presence of, relationship dynamics, interpersonal learning, and multiple curative factors used to develop and enhance the relationship of the educator and student the experiential classroom setting. Implications and recommendations for human service educators are discussed.

On-Line Discussions About Self-Injury And Suicide, Jennifer Marshall, Trey Fitch

Louisiana Journal of Counseling

College students were surveyed regarding their use of websites and BLOG/discussion boards that promote and/or discourage and treat suicidal and self-injurious behavior. The students surveyed related that they were more likely to use websites and BLOG/discussion boards that discourage and treat suicidal and self-injurious behaviors. The results also indicated that the respondents had a higher percentage of response to acknowledging that peers have been influenced by websites/discussion boards/BLOGS that encourage suicidal and self-injurious behaviors. Overall, these findings support the notion that the viewing of harmful self-injury websites is not widespread.

BACKGROUND: Patients who identify as 2SLGBTQIA + report negative experiences with physiotherapy. The objectives were to evaluate student attitudes, beliefs and perceptions related to 2SLGBTQIA + health education and working with individuals who identify as 2SLGBTQIA + in entry-level physiotherapy programs in Canada and to evaluate physiotherapy program inclusiveness towards 2SLGBTQIA + persons.

METHODS: We completed a nationwide, cross-sectional survey of physiotherapy students from Canadian institutions. We recruited students via email and social media from August-December 2021. (2013) Undergraduate Major And Other Factors’ Effects On Success In Counselor-Training, Trey Fitch, Shane Blasko, Chris Bardill

Counselor education programs need to understand what factors contribute to success of counseling students. In this study, the authors examined the influence of undergraduate major, undergraduate grade point average (UGPA), and length of time since last degree. The researchers collected archival data from a diverse sample of 110 counselors in training. The results of the study indicated no difference in success, as measured by graduate GPA and CPCE scores, based on undergraduate degree or years since graduations. However, UGPA was significantly correlated to both measures.

In 2013, seventy nine percent (79%) of Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists were dually licensed as Professional Counselors in Louisiana. Dual licensed individuals are required to adhere to multiple ethical codes based on state licenses and regulations. Additionally, membership in professional associations require adherence to yet other ethical codes. In order to assist dually licensed professionals in Louisiana, a review of the ethical codes associated with such professional licenses and associations is provided. (2013) African American Pastors And Mental Health Professionals: Referral Themes Identified Using Qualitative Research Methods, Lizzie L. West, Kathryn W. Van Asselt, Andrea Daines, Andre Judice

This research study explored the personal experiences of ten African American pastors, located in a south central state, through the use of basic interpretive, qualitative research and a phenomenological design for data analysis. A face-to-face, semi-structured interview methodology was used to examine how African American pastors referred their church members to mental health professionals. Concerns about referrals included not knowing any local therapists, potential cultural barriers such as financial costs and transportation needs, and wanting Christian counselors to work with their church members.
