This report presents findings from a 1993 survey of 200 Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) from two Davao provinces and two Lanao Provinces in the Philippines. Premised on the belief that the BHWs are important in improving the delivery of health and family planning (FP) services in the countryside, the study examined the factors that affect the performance of these health workers. The study is basically descriptive in nature, with the view to diagnosing problems in the implementation and functioning of the program and suggesting appropriate solutions. The FPORT program is being conducted under the Population Council's Asia and Near East Operations Research and Technical Assistance Project. This conference is the culmination of activities that started in October 1992 with a workshop on Introduction to Operations Research in Family Planning. Provider Training And Long-Term Client Outcomes: The Csi Experience, Social Planning, Analysis & Administration Consultants (Spaac)

The present study examined the impact of the Clinical Services Improvement (CSI) Project's provider training program on clients' long-term satisfaction and method use. A sample of 154 clients who received a family planning (FP) method in one of 30 CSI clinics were followed up over a period of 19 months through a series of home interviews. The interviews monitored clients' use of the FP method received at the clinic as well as their satisfaction with that method and the services at CSI. Results of the present study show that provider training on counseling and interpersonal communication has a positive impact …

A critical review of current epidemiological trends and social science research demonstrates that there is an urgent need for expanding the range of female-controlled HIV prevention methods. Existing efforts to control the spread of HIV infection primarily through the encouragement of a reduction in the number of sexual partners, widespread condom promotion, and the control of other sexually transmitted infections are inadequate for many of the world's women. In 1989 the Population Council began a research project on the consequences of high fertility at the family level and its implications for the next generation. Since its inception, the project has been supported by Swedish SIDA and has involved the collaboration of researchers from selected developing countries. Since its introduction in the 1970s, the total number of active contraceptive users dramatically increased to 21 million couples. New developments in contraceptives at the international level have been monitored to assess the possibility of their application in Indonesia, to broaden the variety of available contraceptives. Although the Indonesian Norplant® program is unique in terms of scale and pace of expansion, it also characterizes many of the operational problems that other developing countries are likely to confront as they expand their Norplant programs. Over the last few decades, small-scale projects have been developed throughout Africa to help incorporate women farmers into the mainstream of agricultural extension services. This edition of SEEDS presents an interesting example from Zambia's Western Province—the Women's Extension Program, located within the Home Economics Section of the Department of Agriculture. This program is working to change a government agricultural bureaucracy from within by redefining mandates, encouraging attitude change through staff training, broadening village-level opportunities and perceptions, and widening technical and economic research agendas.
