Assisting Nursing Students In Their Development Of Empathy: A Guide To Fostering Requisite Skills For The Art Of Empathetic Communication, Susan Mee

This 7-week lesson plan is designed for use in clinical nursing courses. It is designed specifically for use by Nursing faculty teaching in the absence of state required patient facing clinical opportunity due to COVID restrictions. The lesson plan describes pedagogical techniques and provides video and education OER resources designed to help support the development of empathetic communication skills over 7 weeks. Refection and video debriefing techniques will be employed. Role play will culminate in the group presentation project of a brief video modeling effective therapeutic empathetic communication.

The electronic medical record (EMR) has become the standard in health care documentation. The EMR has been shown to improve the availability of medical records, provide tools to facilitate communication, and improve patient safety. Because of the absence of standardized training and EMR research, there is a gap in understanding the relationship between the EMR and the provider-patient relationship. The EMR requires the provider to use purposeful and deliberate patient-centered EMR communications behaviors to facilitate a meaningful, engaging, and educational dialogue with patients. Abstract

Problem: Patient falls has been associated with increased morbidity, mortality and decreased quality of life. The increase in total patient falls for 2018 relative to 2017, and a spike of 10 patient falls for the month of June 2018 from a baseline of 5.3 falls per month has gained greater attention to reduce patient harm from falls while hospitalized. Prevention of falls minimizes patient exposure to the possibility of being injured. Background: Due to the lack of appropriate fall prevention measures in an acute rehabilitation unit, there has been a notable increase of patient fall occurrences within a 6 month period. The purpose of this practice improvement project was to reduce patient falls within a 36-bed unit, using visual aids and effective communication among nursing staff. The multi-disciplinary members involved licensed nurses, nursing assistants, nursing supervisors, director of nursing, and executive administrator. The focus of this CNL project is quality improvement using high quality hourly rounds to achieve improved patient satisfaction and communication with nurses. It was determined by reviewing survey results that patient satisfaction and nurse communication is below National levels. Data shows that rounds are not being done well on a medical unit before the improvement project. It is proven that patients receive and perceive higher quality care and communication with increased nurse presence at the bedside. The purpose of this qualitative pilot study was to describe adult children's perceptions of critical caregiving conversations between themselves and their aging parents; barriers to these conversations; factors that facilitate these conversations; and the support from health care providers that adult children believe would help facilitate critical caregiving conversations between themselves and their aging parents. The overall purpose was to increase understanding of family communication processes that promote health as families age. Focus group interviews using a semi-structured interview guide were conducted with 16 adult children with caregiving experience of their aging parents.
