Introduction. As African countries adopt the global goal of improving childhood cancer survival to 60% by 2030, intentional actions are required to improve nursing. This report aims to describe the current status of paediatric oncology nursing in Africa.

Methods. We report on nursing-related aspects of a survey to map paediatric oncology services in Africa (2018–2019), document perceived nursing strengths and weaknesses (2017) and share nurses’ research priorities (2019). Additionally, we report on a survey to identify topics for a foundation course (2019) and the expressed perspective of African nurses about the status of paediatric oncology nursing across the continent (2022). …

This quality improvement project was implemented to assess the impact a standardized handoff tool has on transfer times from the Emergency Department (ED) to the Observation Unit (OU). Literature has shown that the longer a patient is in the incorrect level of care; they are at increased risk of poor outcomes. The use of a standardized handoff tool has a positive impact on patient outcomes. Patients diagnosed with an advanced disease or serious illness often experience a variety of distressing symptoms that can negatively impact their functional status and quality of life. Outpatient palliative care is a medical specialty that often requires a referral from a primary care or specialty care provider who has identified a need for specialized pain and symptom management, psychosocial or caregiver distress, end-of-life care management, or goals of care discussions. Atrial fibrillation is a chronic disease managed through rate control, rhythm control, and anticoagulation. Anticoagulation compliance must be verified when a patient needs a cardioversion to convert to normal sinus rhythm. If a patient has missed a dose within the last four weeks, a Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) is required to confirm that a clot has not formed in the heart. Medication noncompliance plagues the healthcare industry, costing millions of preventable healthcare dollars. The literature review shows that educational and behavioral interventions effectively increased medication compliance. Nursing burnout can be mental, emotional, or physical exhaustion which an excessive amount of prolonged stress can cause. Nursing burnout has affected nursing staff worldwide, directly impacting the care provided to patients and the patient's satisfaction. Ineffective handoff communication has been recognized for years as a practice issue and is the most frequently reported cause of sentinel events in U.S. hospitals (Dufault et al., 2010) and responsible, at least in part, for 30% of all malpractice claims (Fucik, 2019). The development of standardized tools has been identified as a key component to improving handover practice. For this project, a standardized SBAR tool was modified for a local emergency department. A CPR workshop was conducted to provide an opportunity to allow more staff members to become certified, to gain knowledge and gain confidence in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, and to reduce delays in administering aid. Participants were asked to complete the Perceived Competence Scale (PCS) before and after participation in the CPR Workshop. The PCS is a 4-item questionnaire, based on a 7-point Likert scale.
