Research has shown that consistent hourly rounds improve patient satisfaction and quality of care. Successful implementation and maintenance of this patient-centered practice hinges on nursing knowledge and proper training in the processes and procedures that support timely, purposeful, and effective hourly rounds. The purpose of this doctoral project was to implement a staff education project to improve staff perception of the value of hourly rounding on an inpatient orthopaedic unit. In the local organization, the practice problem for this doctoral project is a perceived low level of self-awareness in nursing. This Doctor of Nursing project aimed to determine if an educational intervention focused on self-awareness and the benefit of self-awareness increased knowledge among nurses working on a medical-surgical unit. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection that can cause genital warts and different cancers. According to the CDC, 85% of people will get an HPV infection in their lifetime. HPV infections have decreased significantly since the implementation of the HPV vaccine. Data has shown 90% of cancers caused by HPV can be prevented with administration of HPV vaccination. Current guidelines recommend vaccination administration as early as 9 years of age. This quality improvement project will evaluate HPV vaccination rates amongst teenagers ages 12-18.

Increased social determinants of health (SDoH) are associated with poorer health outcomes and decreased treatment compliance. Addressing SDoH can be associated with increased treatment compliance, although currently there is no standard for completing SDoH screening. The WE CARE screening tool is a validated screen that asks about 6 SDoH and whether the family is interested in assistance if the screen is positive. The purpose of this project was to implement the use of the WE CARE screening tool for patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at follow-up visits.

Methods: A discharge education protocol was implemented on a cardiology inpatient unit. The registered nurses were given a discharge checklist that focused on education and discharge planning with the patient within 24 hours of admission. Purpose: Palliative care (PC) is an important and yet underutilized discipline in neuro critical care units (NCCUs). The purpose of this project was to integrate and improve PC in a NCCU by implementing a Palliative Needs Screening Intervention (PNSI). A PNSI consists of a list of criteria used to screen patients to identify family and patient PC needs.
Methods: A quality improvement project using a PNSI was implemented in a NCCU. Nurses completed 2 hours of pre-implementation PC education and a palliative perceived self-efficacy scale pre/post-implementation. A PNSI was developed and integrated into the NCCU’s daily rounding process.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare workforce was pushed beyond its capacity, driving some out of the field, leaving hospitals and healthcare agencies to face unrelenting demand for care. Adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD) face unique challenges, especially during the critical health care transition from pediatric to adult care. The purpose of this study was to gather the perspectives of adolescents living with SCD and to describe their self-care management experiences prior to their move into the adult health care system.
