Literature shows that pre-hospital transfusions of blood products within the combat environment have shown to have a greater likelihood of survival. Nitrous oxide is an inexpensive and fast-acting gas used in a variety of inpatient and outpatient perioperative settings to hasten the onset of and emergence from general anesthesia. Delirium in intensive care unit (ICU) patients can lead to increased length of stay in the hospital, increased risk of complications, increased polypharmacy, family distress and increased rate of mortality (Vasilevskis et al., 2018). Research has shown that addressing modifiable risk factors can improve survival rate by up to 15%, and routine screening for delirium in ICU patients leads to decreased patient anxiety, reduced in-hospital mortality, early recognition, and treatment of delirium (Krewulak et al., 2021 ; Vasilevskis et al., 2018). IMPORTANCE: Prostacyclin (PGI2) is a therapeutic option to treat congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH)-associated pulmonary hypertension in neonates. Its use may decrease the need for extracorporeal life support (ECLS).

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of early PGI2 therapy with ECLS use and outcomes among patients with CDH.

Background: Physical activity following cardiothoracic surgery can help decrease post-operative complications, expedite functional recovery, improve overall well-being, shorten hospital length of stay (LOS), and reduce morbidity and mortality (Miwa et al., 2017). Of these patients, 58% developed complications after cardiac surgery; of these complications, 31% were pulmonary, 16% were of cardiac in nature, and 14% were neurological (Yayla, 2018).

Introduction: Propionic Acidemia (PA) is a disorder related to abnormal protein and lipid metabolism resulting in progressive neurological injury and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Interventions for PA and secondary disease manifestations can require multi-organ transplantation. Herein we report the case of a child with PA and end-stage DCM requiring left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support with eventual heart-liver transplant. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are challenging, but are the studies most likely to change practice and benefit patients. RCTs investigating neonatal surgical therapies are rare. The Necrotizing Enterocolitis Surgery Trial (NEST) was the first surgical RCT conducted by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Neonatal Research Network (NRN), and multiple lessons were learned. NEST was conducted over a 7.25-year enrollment period and the primary outcome was death or neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) at 18-22 months corrected age. Background: Globally, socioeconomic status (SES) is an important health determinant across a range of health conditions and diseases. However, measuring SES within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) can be particularly challenging given the variation and diversity of LMIC populations.

BACKGROUND: Non-routine events (NRE) are defined as any suboptimal occurrences in a process being measured in the opinion of the reporter and comes from the field of human factors engineering. Background: Evidence supports Apfel Simplified Risk Score (SRS) as being effective in predicting postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in patients following general anesthesia. Raising awareness of a person’s risk for PONV allows for prescription of antiemetics based on the Apfel SRS. Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) for the management of PONV highlight first identifying patients’ risk to better manage anesthesia side effects. Surgical site infections (SSIs) are one of the most common complications of Cesarean section (C-section) procedures. The incidence of SSIs after C-section procedures at Hospital X has increased in each of the past three years. The Labor and Delivery (L&D) unit at Hospital X performs approximately 4,500 C-sections each year. Observation of these procedures illustrated a lack of adhesion to hand hygiene policies and protocols.
