BACKGROUND: As patients with pancreas and periampullary cancer (PPC) experience improved survival rates and longevity, the focus shifts toward living life while surviving cancer. Fatigue is the most commonly reported symptom in all cancer patients. Exercise has been found to effectively decrease fatigue levels and improve physical functioning in cancer patients.

STUDY DESIGN: One hundred two patients with resected PPC consented to participate in this study and were randomized to either an intervention group (IG) or a usual care group (UCG). Background: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Reported risk factors for PC include: advancing age, a family history of PC, high-risk inherited syndromes, cigarette smoking, exposure to occupational and environmental carcinogens, African-American race, high fat/high cholesterol diet, obesity, chronic pancreatitis, and diabetes mellitus.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to characterize one of the largest national registries of familial PC (FPC) and sporadic PC (SPC), focusing on demographics, clinical factors, self-reported environmental and occupational lifetime exposures and survival status.

Knowledge of The Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals and an effective provider cooperative practice involving communication and teamwork are essential for the delivery of safe and compliant patient care in the surgical setting. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of an educational intervention for physicians and nurses designed to increase documentation of compliance with national patient safety standards. Although the majority of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery patients are extubated within 6 to 8 hours following surgery, 20% to 40% of patients remain intubated 12 hours after surgery due to dysfunctional ventilator weaning response (DVWR). DVWR associated with increased morbidity and mortality (30% to 43%) following CABG surgery. Finding significant antecedence to predict DVWR could help to identify and prevent the complications from DVWR after CABG surgery. Literature review revealed that there is an association between cardiopulmonary indicators (CPI) and DVWR after CABG surgery. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of newer therapies on the highest risk patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), those with agenesis of the diaphragm.

SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: CDH remains a significant cause of neonatal mortality. Many novel therapeutic interventions have been used in these infants. Those children with large defects or agenesis of the diaphragm have the highest mortality and morbidity.

The purpose of this replication study was to examine how women with breast cancer reached their decision for surgical treatment (Ward, Heidrich and Wolberg 1989). Twenty-one women who met the surgical criteria, i.e. option for Breast Conserving surgery or Modified Radical Mastectomy, completed four surveys 1 to 7 days post operatively. The women were divided into two groups, 13 who had Breast Conserving surgery and 8 who had Modified Radical Mastectomy. This study used a descriptive design to evaluate discharge planning by examining the clients' perception of preparedness for discharge home following total hip or knee replacement surgery. The conceptual framework was based upon the Betty Neuman Systems Model.; This study used Lawton's (1991) "Discharge Preparation Questionairre" to ascertain the clients' perceptions of preparedness in 10 discharge categories. Perceived preparation was measured using a 5 point summated rating scale. The study site was a 42-bed orthopedic unit in a 119 bed acute care hospital in Southeast Michigan. The purpose of the study was to find out if older men following transurethral prostatectomy experienced a higher level of depression than normal elderly people in the general population. An attempt was made in the study to suggest factors in the patients' illness or environment which may have influenced the amount of depression they experienced.

Hospitalization and surgery have been recognized as being psychologically stressful for the majority of children. Hospital personnel have attempted to reduce some of the unnecessary psychological stress incurred by children by the use of many different methods. This study attempted to evaluate the use of preoperative play preparation sessions for minimizing this stress. The method was experimental with one variable. The subjects were forty-one children aged three and one-half to seven and one-half who had adeno-tonsillectomies. A descriptive survey was conducted to compare the discomfort experienced on three selected postoperative days to determine if there is one day identified by the patient as the most uncomfortable and to assess the symptoms of which he might complain. A checklist of twelve symptoms common to postsurgical patients was administered on the evenings of the second, third and fourth postoperative days by the researcher. The problem of this study was to review 100 open heart surgical cases in a selected hospital to determine the changes occurring in central venous pressure in relation to blood loss.

The review of literature revealed that central venous pressure is an important factor in determining immediate postoperative care of open heart surgical patients. If central venous pressure falls below the normal range of 5 to 10 centimeters of water, hemorrhage is suspected. If central venous pressure is elevated between 15 and 20 centimeters of water, cardiac tamponade is suspected.
