The State Of Artificial Intelligence In Medical Imaging, Catalin Cristian Veghes
School of Professional Studies
This study explores the current state of Artificial Intelligence in medical imaging and provides an accessible assessment of how radiologists perceive the emerging technologies. Throughout the research, we analyze different aspects such as the adoption rate of Artificial Intelligence or the performance of state-of-the-art models, and we identify some of the significant barriers that prevent a wider adoption, such as the lack of collaboration between radiologists and computer scientists. Additionally, we provide a brief theoretical background that explains how deep learning works and how it can be helpful in medical imaging. We describe the architecture of a binary classifier in …
Compliance To Imaging Follow Up Recommendations Among Patients With Bi-Rads 3 Breast Lesions, Florence Thuita
Compliance To Imaging Follow Up Recommendations Among Patients With Bi-Rads 3 Breast Lesions, Florence Thuita
Master of Medicine in Imaging and Diagnostic Radiology
Background: The Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System 3 (BI-RADS 3) category is assigned to lesions which are deemed to be probably benign on breast imaging with a low likelihood of malignancy (≤2%). With regular imaging follow-up, this category is intended to reduce the rate of invasive biopsies while enabling early detection of breast cancer. However, imaging follow-up has been reported to be challenging to both radiologists and referring clinicians in terms of its appropriate use on the various imaging modalities and understanding management of the patients in this category. Furthermore, it has been reported to induce patient anxiety and …

A 44-year-old morbidly obese woman with a history of right carotid body tumor (CBT) resection presented with a symptomatic, nonfunctional, left Shamblin-III CBT. Abutment of the skull base precluded distal internal carotid artery control for arterial reconstruction, favoring parent vessel sacrifice after an asymptomatic provocative test. She underwent CBT resection with anticipated sacrifice of cranial nerves X and XII and the common carotid artery and its branches, developing baroreceptor failure syndrome and sequelae of cranial nerve sacrifice. When facing a symptomatic, metachronous CBT abutting the skull base, upfront operative intervention with adjuvant radiation for residual tumor optimizes curative resection.

Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Intubation is an essential procedure performed on a routine basis in the emergency room. Unsuccessful intubations are associated with deleterious outcomes. A systematic review was performed to investigate the accuracy of point of care ultrasound (POCUS) in successful Endotracheal Tube (ET) tube confirmation, utilizing ultrasonography, identification of the cricothyroid membrane utilizing ultrasound, and dynamically during use of ultrasonography in the process of intubation. This review demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity for ultrasound confirmation of ET tube placement, high success rate in ultrasound-guided intubation, and lower than expected accuracy in identifying the cricothyroid membrane. Ultrasonography should be considered for ET tube …

Guided Imagery And Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy Pain, Brandy Alicia Kirk
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
The standard of care in the treatment for women diagnosed with breast cancer includes identification and biopsy of the sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) of the breast (Chaterjee et al., 2017; Kneece, 2017). The process of identifying the SLNs involves radioisotope injections into or near the areola. Because this area is highly sensitive, women report this procedure to be considerably painful. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to determine if the provision of a 5-minute session of guided imagery (GI), as a complementary alternative medicine, prior to SLN injections was effective in mitigating reports of procedural pain. A …

Using Deep Learning To Analyze Materials In Medical Images, Carson Molder
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Modern deep learning architectures have become increasingly popular in medicine, especially for analyzing medical images. In some medical applications, deep learning image analysis models have been more accurate at predicting medical conditions than experts. Deep learning has also been effective for material analysis on photographs. We aim to leverage deep learning to perform material analysis on medical images. Because material datasets for medicine are scarce, we first introduce a texture dataset generation algorithm that automatically samples desired textures from annotated or unannotated medical images. Second, we use a novel Siamese neural network called D-CNN to predict patch similarity and build …

The Impact Of Virtual Radiographic Positioning Simulation On 1St Year Radiography Students’ Clinical Preparedness Through The Lens Of Activity Theory: A Mixed Method Approach, Christopher Ira Wertz
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Radiography education programs are designed to prepare students to perform radiographic examinations and acquire diagnostic medical images of real patients in the clinical setting. Radiographic Science (RS) education, like all healthcare education, is uniquely different from education in other professional fields. Students must not only acquire the technical, cognitive learning required, but they must also master the psychomotor skills necessary to apply didactic knowledge to patients in a clinical setting. In medical imaging, when students are hesitant or lack knowledge and skills they are prone to produce images with decreased quality or expose patients to unnecessarily high amounts of radiation. …

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects up to 70% of children with obesity and has become the number one etiology for liver transplant in the United States. Early, effective intervention is critical to prevent disease progression into adulthood. Yet, it is seldom achieved through lifestyle modification alone. Thus, children must be included in NAFLD pharmacology trials, which, to date, continue to focus primarily on adult populations. This commentary serves as a call to action.
Imaging Based Prediction Of Pathology In Adult Diffuse Glioma With Applications To Therapy And Prognosis, Evan Gates
Imaging Based Prediction Of Pathology In Adult Diffuse Glioma With Applications To Therapy And Prognosis, Evan Gates
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The overall aggressiveness of a glioma is measured by histologic and molecular analysis of tissue samples. However, the well-known spatial heterogeneity in gliomas limits the ability for clinicians to use that information to make spatially specific treatment decisions. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) visualizes and assesses the tumor. But, the exact degree to which MRI correlates with the actual underlying tissue characteristics is not known.
In this work, we derive quantitative relationships between imaging and underlying pathology. These relations increase the value of MRI by allowing it to be a better surrogate for underlying pathology and they allow evaluation of the …

Investigating Diffusion Tensor Imaging Correlates Of Cognitive Impairment In Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus And Alzheimer's Disease, Omar Hasan, Omar Hasan
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Modest expansion of the human brain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-filled ventricles is normal with aging, and because of this, it can be difficult for physicians to accurately diagnose and treat enlarged ventricles (ventriculomegaly), called hydrocephalus1 (fluid or water in the brain) Ventriculomegaly occurs due to an obstruction (such as a blood clot or tumor), or a change in CSF absorption2. Primary hydrocephalus, also called idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), is non-obstructive and may be comorbid with other neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) or frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Clinically, it can be difficult to tell whether the pathophysiological …

BACKGROUND: Endovascular thrombectomy is the process of removing a blood clot and re-establishing blood flow in patients with emergent large vessel occlusion. The technique provides an opportunity to deliver therapeutics directly to the site of injury. The intra-arterial (IA) route of drug administration in the mouse was developed to bridge the gap between animal stroke treatments and clinical stroke therapy. Here, we adapted the IA method for use in rats, by investigating various flow rates to optimize the IA injection through the internal carotid artery (ICA).
METHODS: Male and female Sprague-Dawley rats (∼4 months of age) were subjected to placement …
