Ketamine As A Treatment Modality For Treatment-Resistant Depression, Tracy Wulff, Shen Cao

Many recent studies have demonstrated the ability of ketamine, an NMDA receptor antagonist, to produce antidepressant effects that may be effective in helping reduce treatment-resistant major depression. In particular, three double-blinded randomized control trials have been conducted to assess the viability and effectiveness of this medication for treatment. This systematic literature review will analyze these studies and determine if the overall research indicates that ketamine is useful in improving depression as measured by the Montgomery–Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS)¹.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a stress-based condition that a person develops after being exposed to an overwhelmingly traumatic event. Military troops frequently experience stress and trauma, making them highly susceptible to psychopathology. This paper evaluates nine clinical trials that used either magic mushrooms, marijuana, or MDMA as an adjunct to traditional psychotherapy to treat veterans who suffer from anxiety, depression, PTSD, suicidality, and other psychopathologies. Multiple scholarly journals and articles were read and analyzed, which show support for the therapeutic potential of psychedelic drugs in treating veterans with PTSD. The pathway to receiving specialty care for first episode psychosis (FEP) among Black youth in the US has received little attention despite documented challenges that negatively impact engagement in care and clinical outcomes. We conducted a systematic review of US-based research, reporting findings related to the pathway experiences of Black individuals with FEP and their family members. A systematic search of PubMed, PsycInfo, and Embase/Medline was performed with no date restrictions up to April 2021. Research using the integrated model of metacognition has suggested that the construct of metacognition could quantify the spectrum of activities that, if impaired, might cause many of the subjective disturbances found in psychosis. Research on social cognition and mentalizing in psychosis, however, has also pointed to underlying deficits in how persons make sense of their experience of themselves and others. Introduction: Based on many published reports, African American patients with cancer experience higher pain severity scores and lower pain relief than White patients. This disparity results from undertreatment of pain and is compounded by low adherence to prescribed non-opioid and opioid analgesics among African American patients with cancer. While nearly one in four patients use cannabis to manage cancer-related symptoms, less is known about how cannabis use influences pain relief in this patient population.

Age-adjusted death rate (AADR) and raw death rate (RDD) used in drugoverdose studies typically involves death-record data and populationsurvey data. Difference can exist between the two data sources, leading to the so-called dual data-source error. Proportionate mortality avoids the error; however, no studies have been done comparing the conclusions drawn using the different metrics. Deficits in neuronal structure are consistently associated with neurodevelopmental illnesses such as autism and schizophrenia. Nonetheless, the inability to access neurons from clinical patients has limited the study of early neurostructural changes directly in patients’ cells. This obstacle has been circumvented by differentiating stem cells into neurons, although the most used methodologies are time consuming. Therefore, we recently developed a relatively rapid (~20 days) protocol for transdifferentiating human circulating monocytes into neuronal-like cells. These monocyte-derived-neuronal-like cells (MDNCs) express several genes and proteins considered neuronal markers, such as MAP-2 and PSD-95. In addition, these cells conduct electrical activity. To address the gap, we sought to: i) determine the prevalence of substance use, specifically alcohol and illicit drug use, among YLWH compared to their HIV-uninfected peers; ii) investigate the independent association between young people’s HIV infection status and substance use; iii) investigate the risk indicators for substance use among these young people.

Dissociative amnesia is a rare psychiatric disorder presenting with sudden retrograde memory impairment and inability to recall autobiographical information that is inconsistent with normal forgetting. This case report discusses dissociative amnesia with dissociative fugue in a middle aged male that led to him becoming homeless. Because of his autobiographical forgetting, he was unable to access services, and we present here the distinctive “detective work” needed to not only help treat his symptoms, but also help him legally establish who he is and gain access to housing. Background: Virtual reality (VR) has proven effective in the treatment of specific phobias and trauma particularly when in-vivo exposure therapy might be costly (e.g. fear of flying, combat scenes). Similarly, VR has been associated with improvement of chronic pain and of acute pain during medical procedures. Despite its effectiveness as a healthcare tool, VR technology is not well-integrated into common practice. Purpose This retrospective case series aims to assess the efficacy and safety of intranasal esketamine as maintenance antidepressant therapy in patients who have demonstrated clinical improvement with off-label intravenous racemic ketamine for treatment-resistant depression. Methods Included in this study are ten consecutive outpatients with treatment-resistant depression who all had a clinically meaningful response when treated with intravenous racemic ketamine and were then switched to intranasal esketamine for maintenance therapy. Patient outcomes were assessed with the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale, Patient-Health Questionnaire- 9, and Clinical Global Impression of Improvement scale at each visit. This project analyzes oral narratives of disaster-related experiences with qualitative measures to identify links between embodied trauma, embodied cognition and narrative expression. Looking at the way the experiences are recounted allows us to hypothesize about how the embodied trauma correlates with psycholinguistic metrics. We reviewed established linguistic approaches such as the LIWC, neuroscientific approaches to trauma studies as well as approaches in cognitive narratology and cognitive studies. It was hypothesized that the absence or presence of parents of adolescents would affect the level of emotional maturity and perceived loneliness among adolescents. The adolescent participants N=250 (males n=125 and females n=125; age range= 13-18; M=16.63; SD=0.87) were approached through purposive convenient sampling technique. Objective. This study aimed at identifying the stress and anxiety levels among physicians and nurses working in Romanian hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods and Results. We conducted an online survey with a questionnaire completed by 169 healthcare providers aged between 25 and 69 years from COVID and non-COVID hospitals. There were 87.6% physicians and 12.4% nurses, with 61.5% women and 38.5% men. Clinicians experienced high levels of stress in 2.7% of the cases, medium stress in 68.9% of the cases, and low stress in 28.4% of the cases. Misidentification delusions are false, fixed beliefs that assign an incorrect identity to a previously familiar or unfamiliar person or place. Such delusions are common in several neuropsychiatric disorders and place a particular burden on individuals with Major Neurocognitive Disorder and their caregivers. No standard pharmacologic or non-pharmacologic treatment approaches have been shown to be consistently effective in addressing this problem. We describe two caregiver-care recipient dyads in which an innovative non-pharmacologic, digital intervention reduced delusional misidentification, improved care recipient behavior, and decreased caregiver burden.

Here, we test a link between whole-brain theories of semantics and the role of the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) in controlled language performance using network control theory (NCT), a branch of systems engineering. Although valproic acid (VPA) induces the metabolism of multiple other drugs, the clinical reports of VPA autoinduction are rare. A comprehensive literature search yielded only one published case series, which provided the rationale to conduct a review of the published cases along with a new case of VPA autoinduction.
