Dramatically Increased Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Utilization From 2000 To 2009, Especially By Podiatrists In Private Offices, Richard E. Sharpe, Levon N. Nazarian, Laurence Parker, Vijay Rao, David C. Levin

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

PURPOSE: Over the past two decades, musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound has emerged as an effective means of diagnosing MSK pathologies. However, some insurance providers have expressed concern about increased MSK ultrasound utilization, possibly facilitated by the low cost and ready availability of ultrasound technology. The purpose of this study was to document trends in MSK ultrasound utilization from 2000 to 2009 within the Medicare population.

METHODS: Source data were obtained from the CMS Physician/Supplier Procedure Summary Master Files from 2000 to 2009, and records were extracted for procedures for extremity nonvascular ultrasound. We analyzed annual volume by provider type using specialties, …

Bone Stress Injury Of The Ankle In Professional Ballet Dancers Seen On Mri., Ilan Elias, Adam C Zoga, Steven M Raikin, Judith R Peterson, Marcus P Besser, William B Morrison, Mark E Schweitzer

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Ballet dancers have been shown to have a relatively high incidence of stress fractures of the foot and ankle. It was our objective to examine MR imaging patterns of bone marrow edema (BME) in the ankles of high performance professional ballet dancers, to evaluate clinical relevance. METHODS: MR Imaging was performed on 12 ankles of 11 active professional ballet dancers (6 female, 5 male; mean age 24 years, range 19 to 32). Individuals were imaged on a 0.2 T or 1.5 T MRI units. Images were evaluated by two musculoskeletal radiologists and one orthopaedic surgeon in consensus for location …

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings In Bipartite Medial Cuneiform - A Potential Pitfall In Diagnosis Of Midfoot Injuries: A Case Series., Ilan Elias, Sachin Dheer, Adam C Zoga, Steven M Raikin, William B Morrison Jan 2008

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings In Bipartite Medial Cuneiform - A Potential Pitfall In Diagnosis Of Midfoot Injuries: A Case Series., Ilan Elias, Sachin Dheer, Adam C Zoga, Steven M Raikin, William B Morrison

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: The bipartite medial cuneiform is an uncommon developmental osseous variant in the midfoot. To our knowledge, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) characteristics of a non-symptomatic bipartite medial cuneiform have not been described in the orthopaedic literature. It is important for orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons, musculoskeletal radiologists, and for podiatrists to identify this osseous variant as it may be mistakenly diagnosed as a fracture or not recognized as a source of non-traumatic or traumatic foot pain, which may sometimes even require surgical treatment. CASE PRESENTATIONS: In this report, we describe the characteristics of three cases of bipartite medial cuneiform on …

An Examination Of Group Agreement Among Functional Ankle Instability Participant Inclusion Criteria, Shantelle A. Howe Weichers Jan 2007

An Examination Of Group Agreement Among Functional Ankle Instability Participant Inclusion Criteria, Shantelle A. Howe Weichers

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Functional ankle instability (FAI) has been commonly identified in the literature as a cause of ankle injury and dysfunction. However, the participant selection criteria for FAI research have not been consistent. Numerous authors have used various selection criteria, with seemingly no two criteria being alike. Although these inconsistencies in FAI research participant selection criteria may explain the contradictions that have been reported in FAI research, the true nature of these selection criteria differences is unknown. It is uncertain exactly if, and to what magnitude, these selection criteria differed. The purpose of this study was to examine group agreement regarding selection …

The Effect Of The Hapad Longitudinal Metatarsal Arch Pad On Ground Reaction Forces And Rear Foot Angle, William F. Rocker Apr 1997

The Effect Of The Hapad Longitudinal Metatarsal Arch Pad On Ground Reaction Forces And Rear Foot Angle, William F. Rocker

Masters Theses

The effectiveness of the Hapad Longitudinal Metatarsal Arch Pad (HLMAP) to correct for pronation was investigated using 30 female volunteer student subjects. The investigation consisted of measuring ground reaction forces measured by a force plate and rear foot angle (RFA) measured by video digitization. The repeated measures design consisted of l grouping variable with 3 levels, supinators, mildpronators, and over pronators, and 2 research variables, 10 trials, and pad/no-pad. The results indicated (a) no significant difference for medial or lateral force, propulsive force, vertic al thrust, negative torque among groups, or between pad/no-pad; (b) a significant difference was found for …
