Cellular oxygen consumption and lactate production rates have been measured in both placental and myometrial cells to study obstetrics-related disease states such as preeclampsia. Platelet metabolic alterations indicate systemic bioenergetic changes that can be useful as disease biomarkers. We tested the hypothesis that platelet mitochondria display functional alterations in preeclampsia. Platelets were harvested from women in the third trimester of either a healthy, non-preeclamptic or preeclamptic pregnancy, and from healthy, non-pregnant women. Using Seahorse respirometry, we analyzed platelets for oxygen consumption (OCR) and extracellular acidification (ECAR) rates, indicators of mitochondrial electron transport and glucose metabolism, respectively. Purpose: Examine pregnancy-related, demographic, psychosocial and healthcare utilization factors among childbearing-aged individuals who were pregnant, postpartum or who experienced pregnancy loss

Methods: Data from nine health care systems in the Mental Health Research Network was included in this sample. A case-control study design was used in which 290 childbearing-age individuals who died by suicide (cases) from 2000-2015 were matched with 10 childbearing-age individuals from the same healthcare system and enrolled during the same time period who did not die by suicide (n=2,900). Conditional logistic regression was used to analyze associations between pregnancy/postpartum/pregnancy loss status and suicide.

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) requires close monitoring during pregnancy due to the health risk it can cause to mother and fetus. BACKGROUND: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) during pregnancy poses significant risks to both the mother and fetus, with an increased risk of fetal demise. Although more prevalent in women with Type I diabetes (T1D); those with Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can also develop DKA. A lack of information about DKA during pregnancy exists worldwide, including in South Africa.

Methods A total of 938 participants aged 18-47 years, with self-reported issues of infertility, were evaluated using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) which comprises three subscales which correspond with distinct sources of social support: significant other (SO), family, and friends. INTRODUCTION: Placental pathology is an important contributor to the understanding of preterm birth and reveals major differences between spontaneous preterm birth (SPTB) and iatrogenic preterm birth (IPTB). The aim of this study was to investigate these relationships.

METHODS: Research midwives collected placentas from 1101 women with singleton pregnancies who were enrolled in the Safe Passage Study. Trained pathology technologists prepared and processed placenta specimens for macroscopic and microscopic examination by designated pathologists. Statistical analyses were done with STATISTICA version 13.

Introduction: Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. A large proportion of preterm deliveries is affected by intra-amniotic inflammation, which can occur in the presence (intra-amniotic infection) or absence (sterile intra-amniotic inflammation) of microbes. Studies have shown an association between intra-amniotic inflammation, cervical shortening, and changes in the cervicovaginal microbiome. However, their causal relationships are unknown. Ovarian torsion is a surgical emergency found in both pediatric and adult populations. It involves the full or partial rotation of the vessels that supply the ovary, resulting in ischemia. In this report, we present the case of a pediatric patient arriving to the Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) for evaluation of right lower quadrant (RLQ) abdominal pain, who was found to have an ovarian torsion. In this particular case, the patient’s ovarian torsion was due to a teratoma, and imaging would later identify an additional smaller teratoma on the contralateral side. Wernicke’s encephalopathy (WE) is a neurological disorder secondary to thiamine deficiency that is precipitated by administration of glucose-containing fluids prior to thiamine supplementation. Though WE is typically diagnosed among alcoholics (12.5%), the prevalence among nonalcoholics can vary from 0.04-0.13%. Around 30-40% of patients with underlying thiamine deficiency will only experience one of the symptoms from the typical triad, with the complete triad (encephalopathy, oculomotor dysfunction/nystagmus, and ataxia) only evident among 5-16% of the population. Among the non-alcoholic patient population presenting with WE, a history of vomiting is more frequent. While nausea affects around 80% of pregnant women, an extreme form …

Background: Hyperammonemia is a medical condition described as increased or elevated serum ammonia levels. High serum levels of ammonia can cause neurotoxicity. Sudden onset severe hyperammonemia may cause severe encephalopathy with brain damage. It can result in cerebral edema, emesis, seizures, hypotonia, and death. We report a young postpartum woman who had a sudden rise in serum ammonia levels after vaginal delivery.

Methods: This was a retrospective cross sectional study of 207 women diagnosed with stillbirth after 24 completed weeks of pregnancy at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), Karachi between 1st January 2015 and 31st December 2019. The primary objective was to find the cause of stillbirth according to the new classification of relevant condition at death (ReCoDe).

BACKGROUND: COPA syndrome is a rare autoimmune disease, demonstrating an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern with variable penetration that occurs more frequently in females than males. This disease manifests in childhood as pulmonary hemorrhage, arthritis, and renal disease.

CASE: We present a case of obstetric management of a 20-year-old nulligravida patient with a diagnosis of COPA syndrome. Her case was further complicated by multiple antepartum admissions for hypoxemia and a complex psychosocial history of substance use. On her first antepartum admission, rheumatology recommended management with hydroxychloroquine, inhaled corticosteroids (budesonide), and bronchodilators (albuterol inhaler) as needed. This DNP project was conducted to identify gaps in knowledge focusing on sexually transmitted infections within Texas and Region one. The research study gathered data from first-year nursing students who have chosen to participate in a sexually transmitted infection-focused educational module. Participants were first-year nursing students and understood the research study was strictly voluntary with no forms of compensation. Currently, the curriculum in the nursing program at which the study took place does not focus on sexually transmitted infections and is directed to speak minimally on the subject. Objective: Unintended pregnancy has become a substantially growing reproductive health concern in South Asian region. The objective of this survey was to assess the magnitude of unintended pregnancy along with its correlates among currently pregnant women residing in Karachi.
Methods: A community based, multistage, cross-sectional study was carried out among 612 currently pregnant women from squatter settlements of Karachi, inquiring for "unintended pregnancy", outcome of interest. Multivariable logistic analysis was done using SPSS v.19 to determine associated factors.
Results: Of 612 pregnant women interviewed, 168(27.4%) reported their pregnancies as unintended. The multivariable regression identified a high likelihood of unintended pregnancy …
