Regional Disparities In The Diagnostic Age Of Skin Carcinomas: An Analysis Of The Rio Grande Valley, Miguel A. Lopez, Natasha Quailes, Elias Arellano Villanueva, Maria Villegas
Research Colloquium
The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) is a region of South Texas with limited dermatologic diagnostic data, particularly among non-melanoma skin carcinomas. The rising rates of chronic conditions and mortality can be attributed to the limited access to healthcare in the region, with skin conditions taking less priority in patients with numerous comorbidities. Data on the age of diagnosis for skin carcinomas between 1995-2019 for Hispanic and non-Hispanic individuals was obtained from the Texas Cancer Registry. It is important to note that the TCR considers primary skin cancers, such as basal and squamous cell carcinoma coded as C44.0-C44.9, as non-reportable cases. …

An Analysis Of The Diagnostic Age Of Skin Carcinomas Across Central Texas, Miguel A. Lopez, Natasha Quailes, Elias Arellano Villanueva, Hamaad Gohar, Maria Villegas
Research Colloquium
Patients seeking healthcare in medically underserved regions often require travel to larger metropolitan hubs across the state of Texas. The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) is home to many such patients who often travel to central Texas for care, which compounds expense and inconvenience. Pockets of central Texas have been reported to have an increased number of dermatologists per 100,000 people. Bexar county ranks among the five most populous counties in the state, with increased access to dermatologic care compared to nearby regions. Using data from the Texas Cancer Registry, this project aims to identify the mean (M) age of diagnosis …

BACKGROUND: Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is an epithelial fragility disease primarily affecting the skin and is caused by variants in the COL7A1 gene. Individuals with RDEB are predisposed to develop highly aggressive cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) which are the most common cause of premature death. There is a lack of effective prevention or treatment options for patients with RDEB-SCC.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the antitumour activity and safety of the polo-like kinase-1 (PLK1) inhibitor, rigosertib, two investigator-initiated open-label, single-arm phase II studies were opened in Europe and the USA and enrolled five patients with RDEB diagnosed with locally advanced …

Hypertension has been previously associated with higher intraoperative bleeding risk in patients undergoing Mohs micrographic surgery. However, the risks of common postoperative Mohs micrographic surgery complications have not been substantiated by large studies. Our study aimed to assess the risks of common Mohs micrographic surgery complications for patients with hypertension utilizing the TriNetX database, a global health records database encompassing over 105 million patients' data, from January 2009 to January 2024. After 1:1 propensity score matching for age, sex, race, diabetes, nicotine dependence, obesity, and anticoagulant use, the final analysis included 80,739 patients in each cohort of patients with hypertension …

The potent sensitizer PPD is considered a key sensitizer in hair dye contact allergy. Modification of its molecular structure to 2-methoxymethyl-p-phenylenediamine (ME-PPD) reduces its skin sensitizing potency. We investigated the usage, behavior, and tolerance profile of ME-PPD-containing professional hair color products in a specifically tailored proactive market surveillance program in hairdresser salons across 5 countries. Hairdressers completed record cards for their clients, which were evaluated at the end of the program. 497 individuals received in total 2461 hair color treatments with ME-PPD-containing hair color. Feedback on compatibility was provided for 194 individuals: 6 individuals reported intolerance reactions, which were assessed …

Diversity in residency programs is important for achieving health equity. Although targeted initiatives have led to some progress, dermatology residency trainees do not proportionally reflect the growing diversity of the U.S. population. We analyzed data from the Association of American Medical Colleges on residents from 2020 to 2024 to evaluate evolving diversity trends.

Introduction: Solitary spindle cell nodules on the foot in pediatric patients are rare and diagnostically challenging. Dermatofibroma (benign fibrous histiocytoma), a common adult dermal lesion, is infrequently observed in children under 18.
The spectrum of pediatric spindle cell tumors includes reactive entities like nodular fasciitis and dermatomyofibroma, benign neoplasms such as myofibroma, and malignant tumors including spindle cell rhabdomyosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP). Accurate differential diagnosis is essential, as DFSP requires wide excision or Mohs surgery to reduce recurrence risk.
Methods (Case Presentation): An 11-year-old boy presented with a one-year history of a non-healing lesion on the heel, initially …

Background
Endometriosis is a common condition in which endometrial glands and stroma are implanted outside the uterine cavity. Rarely, the skin can be involved.
Case Presentation
We describe a case of a 41-year-old woman who presented to the dermatology clinic complaining of a brown umbilical nodule with slight erythema. It was occasionally painful and hemorrhagic. She denied a history of endometriosis and abdominal surgeries. A shave biopsy of the nodule was consistent with a diagnosis of cutaneous endometriosis. The patient was referred to her gynecologist for further evaluation and treatment.
Conclusion
This unique case demonstrates primary cutaneous endometriosis in the …

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is the second most common nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and is predominantly found in the head and neck region. With an annual increase in NMSC diagnoses, cSCC presents significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This review discusses the many risk factors for the development of cSCC, outlines the criteria for defining high-risk cSCC, and examines treatment approaches of these tumors based on risk stratification. While most cSCCs are treatable with surgical excision, approximately 5% metastasize, with head and neck cSCC showing poor prognosis once metastasis occurs. High-risk cSCCs, which are more likely to recur or metastasize, …

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer that is responsive to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). On rare occasion, MCC spontaneously regresses. It is speculated that this regression occurs when biopsy-induced antigen shedding precipitates an immune response. Here, we demonstrate the activation of an adaptive immune response in a patient whose tumor underwent spontaneous regression after biopsy. To evaluate the tumor immune microenvironment during regression, we performed quantitative immunohistochemical analysis and T-cell receptor (TCR) sequencing. Relative to baseline, the regressing tumor showed evidence of an activated cytotoxic T-cell response together with increased TCR clonality, greater representation …

Telogen effluvium is a form of non-scarring hair loss characterized by premature shedding of hair. Pathophysiologically, telogen effluvium occurs when a significant number of hair follicles prematurely enter the telogen phase, resulting in excessive shedding. The exact mechanism is unclear, but it is believed to involve alterations in the hair follicle's growth cycle, possibly mediated by illness, infection, major surgery, low protein intake, or hormonal changes. Some medications can also be linked to this disease, such as beta blockers, carbamazepine, and vitamin A. When affected hairs are in the resting phase, noticeable hair shedding occurs. Our patient was a 61-year-old …

Persistent Lichenoid Reaction And Eruptive Keratoacanthomas Following Pd-1 Inhibitor Therapy, Paul Vance, Michael Hohnadel
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Background
Immune checkpoint inhibitors, such as nivolumab, have become integral in treating metastatic malignancies by enhancing immune responses against tumors. However, they are associated with immune-related adverse events (irAEs), including cutaneous reactions. We report a case of persistent lichenoid dermatitis during therapy and eruptive keratoacanthomas (KAs) following the cessation of nivolumab.
Case Presentation
A 77-year-old Caucasian man presented with a subcutaneous melanoma on the left lateral chest, treated with excision followed by adjuvant nivolumab. Seven weeks into therapy, he developed pruritic erythematous macules, forming patches on his forearms, later spreading to his trunk. Biopsy confirmed lichenoid dermatitis. Treatment with triamcinolone …
