Background/Objectives: Microbial dysbiosis is implicated with a pathogenic role in both irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and several dermatological conditions. Yet, few studies have assessed a potential overlapping epidemiologic association. We aimed to assess the 1-year prevalence of common dermatologic conditions following an initial IBS diagnosis and to evaluate the reverse association using reciprocal analyses. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study using TriNetX. Patients aged 18–50 with no history of inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, or infectious intestinal disease were matched 1:1 to healthy controls by demographics and comorbidities. The primary outcome was the prevalence of acne vulgaris, psoriasis, …

Health Equity and Quality Improvement (HEQI) Summit
Background and Objective
- Testosterone-induced acne vulgaris (TiAV) and androgenic alopecia (TiAGA) are common dermatologic effects of gender- affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) in transmasculine or non- binary individuals, with prevalence estimates ranging from 31.1% to 88% for TiAV and up to 63.3% for TiAGA. These conditions can contribute to significant psychological distress and may exacerbate gender dysphoria, underscoring the importance of affirming, evidence-based dermatologic care.
- Despite increasing access to GAHT and the high prevalence of these conditions, there are no standardized guidelines for the management of TiAV and TiAGA, and data on dermatology trainees’ preparedness to care for this population are …

The Quality-Of-Life Benefits And Risk Of Isotretinoin (Accutane) In Acne Treatment: A Systematic Review, Noelia Valencia Zuniga
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Acne vulgaris is a prevalent dermatological condition, particularly affecting adolescents and young adults. While often treated as a cosmetic issue, acne can significantly impair a patient's mental health and overall quality of life (QoL). Isotretinoin, commonly known as Accutane, is widely regarded as the most effective treatment for severe and persistent acne. However, its use is controversial due to a range of potential side effects, including psychiatric symptoms, teratogenicity, and other systemic complications. To better understand the risk-benefit profile of isotretinoin in acne treatment, we conducted a systematic review, focusing on the QoL benefits and risks associated with its use. …

[Practice points]
- Clinicians should consider monitoring for early signs of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in adult patients with acne to facilitate prompt diagnosis and intervention.
- Clinicians should remain judicious when prescribing antibiotics for acne management to minimize potential disruptions to the gut microbiota and the risk for IBS.
- Isotretinoin may serve as a safer alternative to antibiotics in patients with acne, particularly those with gastrointestinal concerns.

Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Acne Vulgaris is an inflammatory skin disorder that is common among adolescents and young adults. Acne is defined as a chronic inflammatory dermatosis which consists of open comedones (blackheads), closed comedones (whiteheads) and inflammatory lesions.1 There are many ways to combat acne, one of which is to stop the effects of androgens on androgen receptors. Here we will review Clascoterone, a medication approved for the treatment of acne. Clascoterone is the first topical medication to target the hormonal pathogenesis of acne. It was approved by the FDA in 2020 and is effective in treatment of acne vulgaris in patients 12 …

Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory skin condition of the pilosebaceous unit in adolescents and young adults and is primarily characterized by the presence of open and closed comedones. In patients of various skin pigmentations, skin-colored comedones may be difficult to appreciate and lead to incorrect or delayed diagnosis of acne. To aid in the identification of acne vulgaris in patients of various skin pigmentations, we present comedonal acne in different skin types and commonly encountered differential diagnoses. With its significant volume and burden of disease, acne vulgaris should be correctly identified in various skin pigmentations by primary care clinicians …

Background: The association between psoriasis and metabolic syndrome is appealing as the two may share a similar cross-linking systemic inflammation process. The inflammation processes occurring in obesity and psoriasis may aggravate one another. This raised the question of whether a low-calorie diet would possibly reverse the aforementioned process. This study aims to determine whether calorie restriction reduces psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) in obese patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis receiving conventional treatment compared to no calorie restriction.
Methods: We searched Pubmed/Pubmed Central, ScienceDirect, Cochrane library, EBSCOhost, and Scopus databases using keywords derived from our clinical question. The inclusion …

Alternative Modality In The Treatment Of Acne Vulgaris: Low Level Laser Therapy, Rudi Chandra, Nelva K. Jusuf
Journal of General - Procedural Dermatology and Venereology Indonesia
Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit with polymorphic manifestations. The four key elements leading to the formation of acne lesions are alteration of follicular keratinization that leads to comedones, increased and altered sebum production under androgen control, follicular colonization by Propionibacterium acnes, and complex inflammatory mechanisms that involve both innate and acquired immunity. Phototherapy (light, lasers, and photodynamic therapy) has been proposed as an alternative therapeutic modality to treat acne vulgaris and is proposed to have less side effects compared to other treatment options. Recently, low-level laser (light) therapy (LLLT) which refers to the use …

Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles
Poor sleep quality is extremely prevalent, with about one third of adults in the USA obtaining less than the recommended amount of sleep. In addition, poor sleep quality has been linked to an increased risk of many conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, psychiatric conditions, and overall all-cause mortality. Research has shown that sleep disturbance does impact skin disease, although many details of this relationship are still unclear. The goal of this study is to determine if there is a relationship between acne severity and sleep quality in adults. Forty subjects with acne were recruited from dermatology clinics in Cleveland, OH, to …
