These relationships can be formal, meaning the child has been removed from a parent and placed by Child Protective Services (CPS) into the care of a relative or family friend, or informal, meaning the relationship occurs without any involvement from CPS. This brief focuses on the former and uses the term kinship care to refer to formal kinship caregiving.

Background: ABO incompatibility is one of the most common causes of immune-mediated neonatal jaundice. It occurs in approximately 20-25% of all pregnancies. Literature shows that 60- 80% of newborns will develop physiological jaundice within the first week of life. Globally, the incidence ranges from 10-41%. Early detection of newborns with ABO incompatibility-related jaundice can prevent the incidence of bilirubin-induced neurological dysfunction. Whereas there have been extensive published data on rhesus isoimmunization, very few studies have examined ABO incompatibility and isoimmunization. Introduction: Severe gastro‑oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is associated with a poor health‑related quality of life (HRQoL). Nissen fundoplication is the most common surgical procedure for patients with GERD. A feeding gastrostomy tube may be inserted at the same time in selected patients where there are unsafe swallowing and/or feeding difficulties. The goals of surgery are to eliminate symptoms, prevent reflux complications and ultimately improve the quality of life. The main objective of this study was to assess the HRQoL of children with GERD after Nissen fundoplication and gastrostomy tube insertion.

The neurodegenerative disease field has enjoyed extremely limited success in the development of effective therapeutics. One potential reason is the lack of disease models that yield accurate predictions and optimal therapeutic targets. Standard clinical trials have pre-determined a single treatment modality, which may be unrelated to the primary drivers of neurodegeneration. Recent proof-of-concept clinical trials using a precision medicine approach suggest a new model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) as a chronic innate encephalitis that creates a network insufficiency. Identifying and addressing the multiple potential contributors to cognitive decline for each patient may represent a more effective strategy. Here we review …

The role of circulating estrogens and the impact of lifetime exposure to multiple sources of exogenous estrogens as factors in carcinogenesis were not well understood. Research showed conflicting results when dietary phytoestrogen (PE) intake and xenoestrogen (XE) exposure occurred independently and when co-exposed. Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a leading vaccine-preventable cause of childhood invasive disease. Nigeria has the second highest pneumococcal disease burden globally, with an estimated ~49 000 child deaths caused by pneumococcal infections each year. Ten-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (GSK; PCV10) was introduced in December 2014 in a phased approach. However, few studies have characterized the disease-causing pneumococci from Nigeria. BACKGROUND: People with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and substance use disorder (PWH/SUD) are at higher risk of nonadherence to antiretroviral therapy. Bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (B/F/TAF) exhibits high rates of efficacy with a favorable adverse event profile. The BASE study (NCT03998176) is a phase 4, single-arm study evaluating the effectiveness and safety of B/F/TAF among PWH/SUD.

METHODS: Viremic (HIV RNA >1000 copies/mL) PWH/SUD initiated B/F/TAF once daily for 48 weeks (W). The primary endpoint was proportion of participants with HIV RNA/mL at W24.
