Maternal opioid use poses a significant health concern not just to the expectant mother but also to the fetus. Notably, increasing numbers of children born suffering from neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) further compounds the crisis. While epidemiological research has shown the heightened risk factors associated with NOWS, little research has investigated what molecular mechanisms underly the vulnerabilities these children carry throughout development and into later life. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been investigated for their potential use as an alternative to antibiotics due to the increased demand for new antimicrobial agents. AMPs, widely found in nature and obtained from microorganisms, have a broad range of antimicrobial protection, allowing them to be applied in the treatment of infections caused by various pathogenic microorganisms. Since these peptides are primarily cationic, they prefer anionic bacterial membranes due to electrostatic interactions. However, the applications of AMPs are currently limited owing to their hemolytic activity, poor bioavailability, degradation from proteolytic enzymes, and high-cost production. INTRODUCTION Aicardi syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder predominantly affecting females and characterized by agenesis of the corpus callosum, infantile spasms, and distinctive chorioretinal lacunae. We present the case of a 24-year-old female with a known history of Aicardi syndrome who presented with fever of unknown origin, ultimately attributed to Staphylococcus Epidermidis infective endocarditis involving a native valve.

Purpose of review: Headaches, especially migraines, are one of the most pervasive neurological disorders affecting up to 15.9% of the population. Current methods of migraine treatment include lifestyle changes, pharmacologic, and minimally invasive techniques such as peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) and pericranial nerve blocks (PNB).

Recent findings: PNBs are used to treat and prevent migraines and involves injection of local anesthetics with or without corticosteroids. PNBs include the greater occipital, supraorbital, supratrochlear, lesser occipital, auriculotemporal, sphenopalantine ganglion, and cervical root nerve blocks. Introduction: In carefully selected patients with medically refractory epilepsy, disconnective hemispherotomy can result in significant seizure freedom; however, incomplete disconnection can result in ongoing seizures and poses a significant challenge. Completion hemispherotomy provides an opportunity to finish the disconnection. We describe the use of magnetic resonance-guided laser interstitial thermal ablation (MRgLITT) for completion hemispherotomy.

Methods: Patients treated with completion hemispherotomy using MRgLITT at our institution were identified. Procedural and seizure outcomes were evaluated retrospectively.

Results: Five patients (3 males) underwent six MRgLITT procedures (one child treated twice) for completion hemispherotomy at a median age of 6 years (range 1.8-12.9). Two …

Introduction: Aortic coarctation has an incidence of 0.04% and is typically amendable either through a surgical or interventional approach. Unfortunately, patients that have undergone repair of the coarctation are at risk of systemic hypertension which suggests a more diffuse vasculopathy. The arteriopathy can also affect the pulmonary vasculature leading to pulmonary hypertension (PH). The development of PH is a poor prognostic factor. Patients with a history of coarctation repairs have more significant afterload measurements which stiffen their left ventricle and decrease compliance and diastolic function. Adults with Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) are at increased risk of premature cardiovascular death …
