Background: In the United States (U.S.), falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and over, resulting in 36 million falls yearly (Moreland et al., 2020). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023), one in four older adults experiences a fall each year. Falls are the world's second most prominent cause of accidental deaths (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among older adults (Moreland et al., 2020).

Although empathy is considered a core competency for healthcare providers and has been shown to play an important role in improving patient outcomes, empathy development while working with dying patients is not well understood and may present challenges during clinical training. This qualitative study explored empathy development among 24 undergraduate health professions students participating in an experiential training program where they served as caregivers providing bedside care to hospice patients. Abstract: Approximately 10% of patients with recent percutaneous intervention (PCI) have concomitant atrial fibrillation (AF) and others may have concomitant venous thromboembolism (VTE). This makes choosing the optimal antithrombotic regimen challenging. The ACC published a 2020 decision pathway to guide safe and evidence-based use of antiplatelet and anticoagulant combinations for certain patients. Abstract: Cancer associated venous thromboembolisms (VTE) are associated with higher health care resource utilization (number of hospitalizations, hospital length of stay, inpatient/outpatient medical services) and can complicate treatment of cancer. The Khorana Predictive Model for Chemotherapy-Associated VTE is a validated risk assessment model that determines a patient’s risk of developing VTEs and provides recommendations for starting prophylactic anticoagulation in ambulatory oncology patients. The Khorana Score is composed of various patient characteristics including site of primary cancer, prechemotherapy platelet count, hemoglobin level, prechemotherapy leukocyte count, and BMI. Abstract: Cisatracurium is a non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent used for paralysis in paitents with acute respiratory distress syndrome on mechanical ventilation. Paralysis prevents ventilator dyssynchrony and reduces patient’s work of breathing, which decreases the risk of pneumothorax. On November 1, 2023, PSVMC critical care units transitioned from fixed dosing of cisatracurium for ARDS to a weight-based, titratable dosing protocol. A single-center retrospective cohort study demonstrated cisatracurium titrated using train-of-four was associated with similar ventilatory and clinical outcomes with three folds reduction in cisatracrurium dose in comparison to fixed dose strategy. INTRODUCTION: A peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is a frequent reason for a visit to the emergency department. As there are no current published guidelines for medical versus surgical management, attending physicians vary among management tendencies, generating uncertainty among resident physicians. This project established a standard of care for managing patients with PTA and provided clear management guidelines to the emergency department, in collaboration with the otolaryngology department, at a community academic hospital.

PURPOSE: Meeting scholarly activity requirements continues to be a challenge in many family medicine (FM) residency programs. Studies comprehensively describing FM resident scholarship have been limited. We sought to identify institutional factors associated with increased scholarly output and meeting requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

OBJECTIVES: Our goals were to: (1) describe scholarly activity experiences among FM residents compared with ACGME requirements; (2) classify experiences by Boyer's domains of scholarship; and (3) associate experiences with residency program characteristics and scholarly activity infrastructure.

Background: Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) in adult intensive care patient units (ICU) is one of the most common and deadly nosocomial infections today. Studies have identified a gap in intensive care nurse ventilator education and compliance with hospital protocols. Overall increasing the rates of VAP and morbidity. Hospitals worldwide have shown a decrease in VAP rates after inheriting "VAP-bundles''. This includes nurse specific interventions and assessments as a preventative measure. Background. Delirium is an acute clinical syndrome that is characterized by features of disrupted arousal, attention, cognition, sleep, and perception. Delirium is a well-documented phenomenon in critical care settings in both adult and pediatric populations, particularly among patients with length of stay greater than or equal to 48 hours. Delirium has multiple adverse effects, including increased mortality rate, prolonged duration of mechanical ventilation, higher reintubation rates, prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) admission, prolonged hospital admission, short- and long-term cognitive impairment, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Background: Hypertension (HTN) that is not adequately controlled leads to cardiovascular disease, stroke, and heart disease. It affects 116 million adults (47%) in the United States (U.S.). The HTN compliance rate in a South Texas public health clinic was 64%, below the national benchmark of 76%. Home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) was recommended in a joint statement by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Medical Association (AMA). Literature evidence revealed that the HBPM bundle increased BP control (< 140/90 mmHg) compliance.

Methods: A literature review was conducted. The PubMed and MEDLINE search engines, were used to obtain medical, biomedical and life sciences literature, and CINAHL for nursing and allied health resources, Governmental agency sites, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), were also explored. Background: At a local tertiary care hospital, there was no recommendation to guide anesthesia providers in the administration of intraoperative dexamethasone to patients with diabetes. While dexamethasone is a highly effective antiemetic, it may promote hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to guide and educate about current recommendations for the administration of dexamethasone for PONV prophylaxis in patients with diabetes.
