Background

Current radiology training in medical schools is still predominantly limited to passively observing the radiologist at the workstation and through lectures, textbooks and online sources. Evaluation is also mainly limited on still image interpretation or knowledge-based multiple-choice questions. Furthermore, students may have specific interests based on their choice of residency. In order to create a tailored and active learning experience, and to evaluate students’ ability in image interpretation, we utilized an open-source web-based Picture archiving and communication system (PACS) named "Weasis" and integrated a report system.

There has been a recent recognition of the need to prepare PhD-trained scientists for increasingly diverse careers in academia, industry, and health care. The PhD Data Task Force was formed to better understand the current state of PhD scientists in the clinical laboratory workforce and collect up-to-date information on the training and certification of these laboratorians. In this report, we summarize the findings of the PhD Data Task Force and discuss the relevance of the data collected to the future supply of and demand for PhD clinical laboratory scientists. BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common human birth defect, and clinicians need to understand the anatomy to effectively care for patients with CHD. However, standard two-dimensional (2D) display methods do not adequately carry the critical spatial information to reflect CHD anatomy. Three-dimensional (3D) models may be useful in improving the understanding of CHD, without requiring a mastery of cardiac imaging. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of 3D models on how pediatric residents understand and learn about tetralogy of Fallot following a teaching session.

Certain minority populations are underrepresented in medicine (URM). The visiting clerkship represents a collaborative effort between Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education that has been reported to help increase URM applicants and residents. Visiting URM student electives in pediatrics at five institutions were examined in an effort to better understand best practices. Financial assistance and mentorship were universal among programs. Most programs reported an increase in URM applicants but variable numbers of matched URM residents.

A working knowledge of the home and neighborhood environment is critical to understanding the barriers that families face when struggling with obesity. Most doctors are only given the opportunity to address individuals with obesity in the office setting and usually describe their counseling abilities as ineffective. This focused home visitation curriculum offers a unique tool to improve residents’ understanding of the social determinants of health, how these determinants relate to obesity, and critical obesity-management skills. Background: To achieve the 90-minute reperfusion goal in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) care, providers must diagnose STEMIs from electrocardiograms (ECGs) obtained upon emergency room arrival and appropriately activate the catheterization lab. To enhance early STEMI care, we sought to improve medical student STEMI recognition and diagnostic accuracy with a teaching module we designed and developed.

Chronic wounds that have failed to heal after 3 months of appropriate wound care affect approximately 6.5 million people in the US with a prevalence of 1% and costs estimated at $25 billion per year. Medical students currently receive limited wound care training, yet to effectively manage chronic wounds, providers must both understand the biology of healing, and also remain up-to-date with wound care guidelines published by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The purpose of this student-led project was to investigate medical students' knowledge and comfort with wound care guidelines.

Objectives: Costs of care are increasingly important in healthcare policy and, more recently, clinical care in the Emergency Department (ED). We compare ED resident and patient perceptions surrounding the costs of emergency care, compliance, communication, and education.

Methods: We conducted a mixed methods study using surveys and qualitative interviews in a single, urban academic ED. The first study population was a convenience sample of adult patients (>17 years of age), and the second was ED residents training at the same institution. Pediatric neuroimaging can provide a challenge to radiology residents during call due to the fact that it is infrequently encountered in many institutions. The goal of this teaching tool is to provide radiology residents with background knowledge in pediatric brain anatomy and pathology in preparation for taking call. There is one teaching tool and one assessment tool with answers, all three of which are in PowerPoint format. Adult literature has demonstrated that patient preferences and understanding of discharge instructions can impact success of discharge and even predict return ER visits. There is very little data in pediatric literature describing what information should be discussed with families when providing discharge instructions, and most pediatric residents do not receive formal education on the topic. Necrotizing crescentic glomerulonephritis is found in anti-glomerular basement membrane (GBM) disease (Type 1), immune complex (Type 2) deposition and anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic (ANCA)-related disease (Type 3).

ANCA positive glomerulonephritis is typically characterized on renal biopsy as pauci-immune, with mild or absent glomerular staining for immunoglobulin, or complement staining by immunofluorescence.

Rare cases of concomitant p-ANCA plus linear immunofluorescence pattern staining have been discussed, however none with prior association with c-ANCA.

We report a case of systemic c-ANCA pulmonary-renal syndrome with anti-GBM-disease-typical linear staining on renal biopsy immunofluorescence.

E-learning, also known as computer-assisted learning, successfully bridges anatomical knowledge and transferrable skills, such as critical analysis, teamwork, leadership and communication. Several institutions have already integrated histology and physiology in team based laboratory approaches, but integration of histology and pathology instruction has been done to a lesser extent. Our aim was to develop an e-learning atlas that integrates microanatomy and pathology laboratory for an interdisciplinary pre-clinical medical curriculum.

The goal of this study is to evaluate the impact of a newly designed interactive method of teaching clinically relevant anatomy to medical students on the OB/GYN clerkship. A 20-question multiple-choice exam was administered to 143 consenting third-year medical students at the beginning and end of each OB/GYN rotation. Students participated in a skills lab with preparatory e-modules that linked anatomy to clinical applications during each rotation. Topics included perineal muscle anatomy (laceration), anterior abdominal wall anatomy (cesarean section), vulvovaginal and uterine anatomy (IUD), and pelvic organ, vasculature, and neural anatomy (hysterectomy). Background: It is well documented in the medical education literature that students retain minimal anatomy knowledge when transitioning from pre-clinical didactics to clinical application on the wards. Introduction: In July of 2009, Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC) Hospitalist and Emergency Department (ED) educators collaborated to create and implement unique simulation scenarios for trainees rotating on the pediatric hospitalist teams. The goal of this educational intervention is to teach and allow rehearsal of an approach to the unstable patient across three scenarios. Trainees use this high-fidelity, low-risksimulation to apply targeted clinical reasoning and their initial assessment and management strategies to core clinical problems. The three scenarios included in this resource cover altered mental status and seizure, respiratory distress and anaphylaxis, and refractory status asthmaticus, respectively.

Clinicians should be competent at contagious disease outbreak detection and management. Given the threat of emerging infectious diseases and biowarfare, there is a need to develop instructional methods on these topics. We have created a case-based exercise addressing sentinel case recognition, reporting, and containment. The workshop, conducted for medical students during their emergency medicine clerkship, incorporates the core competencies of systems-based practice, practice-based learning, and patient care.
